Book excerpt: This study examines how the present liturgical texts are like and unlike those used by earlier generations, and therefore how the present generation of Roman Catholics may be different on their account. The precise form that the textual examination takes in each of the proper seasons, etc., depends upon the mix of retained, replaced, and edited collects. In every case, the author works with the Latin originals and the accompanying translations are her own.The entire project has three main steps: to examine each liturgical season to see how the spiritual and theological emphases of its collects have changed; to determine what these changes mean for the year as a whole; to evaluate the effect of the changes on the way that contemporary Catholics experience and live Christian faith. The work is important not simply for a better understanding today's and tomorrow's Catholics, but also for a correct understanding of our present Liturgy and its place in the western liturgical tradition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On July 7, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI issued his long awaited motu proprio, Summorum Pontificum. In this document he granted permission "to celebrate Mass following the typical edition of the Roman Missal promulgated by Bl. John XXIII in 1962 as an extraordinary form of the Liturgy of the Church." Because of this motu proprio, there has been much interest in viewing the Paul VI missal as a continuation of the Bl. John XXIII missal. Understanding the earlier ritual expression is essential if we are to deeply understand the ordinary expression of the Mass of Paul VI. This book is a collection essays from the proceedings of the 11th International CIEL (International Centre for Liturgical Studies) Colloquium held at Merton College, Oxford, September of 2006. CIEL is an academic school of Liturgy founded in 1994 in Paris to form an academic school to instruct priests, seminarians, religious and the laity in the riches of Catholic liturgical history and development of the liturgy.

Book Synopsis European Literature and the Latin Middle Ages by : Ernst Robert Curtius
Download or read book European Literature and the Latin Middle Ages written by Ernst Robert Curtius and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-21 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published just after the Second World War, European Literature and the Latin Middle Ages is a sweeping exploration of the remarkable continuity of European literature across time and place, from the classical era up to the early nineteenth century, and from the Italian peninsula to the British Isles. In what T. S. Eliot called a "magnificent" book, Ernst Robert Curtius establishes medieval Latin literature as the vital transition between the literature of antiquity and the vernacular literatures of later centuries. The result is nothing less than a masterful synthesis of European literature from Homer to Goethe. European Literature and the Latin Middle Ages is a monumental work of literary scholarship. In a new introduction, Colin Burrow provides critical insights into Curtius's life and ideas and highlights the distinctive importance of this wonderful book.

Book Synopsis The Voice of the Church at Prayer by : Michael Lang

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pope Benedict XVI has made the liturgy a central theme of his pontificate, and he has paid special attention to the vitally important role of language in prayer. This historical and theological study of the changing role of Latin in the Roman Catholic Church sheds light on some of the Holy Father's concerns and some of his recent decisions about the liturgy. The Fathers of the Second Vatican Council allowed for extended use of the vernacular at Mass, but they maintained that Latin deserved pride of place in the Roman Rite. The outcome, however, was that modern translations of the prayers of the Mass replaced the Latin prayers. What was the reason for the Council's decision and why is there now a desire for greater use of Latin in Catholic worship? Why have some post-conciliar English translations of the prayers of the Mass been replaced? Fr. Lang answers these questions by first analyzing the nature of sacred language. He then traces the beginnings of Christian prayer to the Scriptures and the Greek spoken at the time of the apostles. Next he recounts the slow and gradual development of Latin into the sacred language of the Western Church and its continuing use throughout the Middle Ages. Finally, he addresses the rise of modern languages and the ongoing question of whether the participation of the laity at Mass is either helped or hindered by the use of Latin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decades following the Second Vatican Council, Catholic liturgy became an area of considerable interest and debate, if not controversy, in the West. Mid-late 20th century liturgical scholarship, upon which the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council were predicated and implemented, no longer stands unquestioned. The liturgical and ecclesial springtime the reforms of Paul VI were expected to facilitate has failed to emerge, leaving many questions as to their wisdom and value. Quo vadis Catholic liturgy? This Companion brings together a variety of scholars who consider this question at the beginning of the 21st century in the light of advances in liturgical scholarship, decades of post-Vatican II experience and the critical re-examination in the West of the question of the liturgy promoted by Benedict XVI. The contributors, each eminent in their field, have distinct takes on how to answer this question, but each makes a significant contribution to contemporary debate, making this Companion an essential reference for the study of Western Catholic liturgy in history and in the light of contemporary scholarship and debate.
Book Synopsis Ever Directed Towards the Lord by : Uwe Michael Lang

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The celebration of the liturgy of the Holy Eucharist is one of the central issues in the Roman Catholic Church today. To mark the "Year of the Eucharist", the Society of St. Catherine of Siena held a conference on the Eucharistic liturgy at Oxford in 2005. This book contains the energetic and fruitful reflection of the scholars present at the conference. The contributions are academically demanding yet accessible to a wider audience. The collection does not seek a solution to the current problems, rather it promotes an open discussion about the theological, philosophical and historical issues surrounding the celebration of the liturgy and its future as well as paying attention to the increasing interest in the pre-conciliar rites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a new, synthetic overview of the structure and ritual shape of the Roman Mass from its formative period in late antiquity to its post-Tridentine standarisation. Starting with the Last Supper and the origins of the Eucharist, Uwe Michael Lang constructs a narrative that explores the intense religious, social, and cultural transformations that shaped the Roman Mass. Lang unites classical liturgical history with insights from a variety of other disciplines that have drawn attention to the ritual performance and reception of the mass. He also presents liturgical developments within the broader historical and theological contexts that affected the celebration and experience of the sacramental rite that is still at the heart of Catholic Christianity. Aimed at scholars from a broad swathe of subjects, including religious studies, history, art history, literature, and music, Lang's volume serves as a comprehensive history of the Roman Mass over the course of a millenium.
