Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cicero manipulated issues relevant to Rome's possession of an empire (provincial extortion, access to citizenship, and the distribution of military commands) in an important group of speeches: the Verrines, de imperio Cn. Pompei, pro Archia, pro Flacco, de provinciis consularibus, and pro Balbo. C.E.W. Steel examines the speeches' rhetorical techniques and aims in detail. Cicero's presentation of empire concentrates on the power wielded by individuals at the expense of wider questions of administrative structures. Thus the problems which arise in the running of an empire can be presented as the result of personal failings rather than endemic to the structures of government - as questions of morality rather than of administration. Steel argues that this concept is fundamentally flawed. The weakness cannot be explained simply as Cicero's lack of insight, but as an inevitable consequence of the uses to which he puts oratory in his political career: comparison with his contemporaries shows other leading figures producing much more radical approaches to the problems of empire.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pro Cluentio is Cicero's longest extant speech. In antiquity it was particularly esteemed, by the orator himself as well as others; Quintilian cites it more than any other oration of Cicero. But its very length, and the complexity of the legal situation, have deterred many readers from giving it the attention it deserves. "The Rhetoric of Cicero's Pro Cluentio" is the first full-length discursive treatment of the speech as a whole. Each chapter has an introductory section on the rhetorical problem at hand, including valuable general information on ancient rhetorical theory and practice. The eclectic critical method, beginning from an Aristotelian/Quintilianic basis, advances some new theoretical models for the understanding of invention in Roman ora-tory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Pro Archia is a delightful speech delivered by Cicero in defense of A. Licinius Archias, a Greek poet whose eligibility for Roman citizenship was challenged in 62 bce. It is one of the best literary defenses of literature and the humanities. Cerutti's edition provides a comprehensive treatment of grammatical issues with a keen analysis of the rhetorical devices Cicero wove into the fabric of the oration. This edition contains the Pro Archia text required for the AP* Latin Literature exam (de Amicitia text selections available separately) and is suitable for use in intermediate college, AP, and advanced high school courses. Presented in this edition are the entire, unadapted Latin text of the oration with a facing-page vocabulary and same-page commentary. Other features combine to make this a preferred text for a first reading of this compelling oration. There are no macrons in the text, notes, or vocabularies. A Teacher's Guide and Companion are available separately."--Publisher's website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timeless techniques of effective public speaking from ancient Rome's greatest orator All of us are faced countless times with the challenge of persuading others, whether we're trying to win a trivial argument with a friend or convince our coworkers about an important decision. Instead of relying on untrained instinct—and often floundering or failing as a result—we’d win more arguments if we learned the timeless art of verbal persuasion, rhetoric. How to Win an Argument gathers the rhetorical wisdom of Cicero, ancient Rome’s greatest orator, from across his works and combines it with passages from his legal and political speeches to show his powerful techniques in action. The result is an enlightening and entertaining practical introduction to the secrets of persuasive speaking and writing—including strategies that are just as effective in today’s offices, schools, courts, and political debates as they were in the Roman forum. How to Win an Argument addresses proof based on rational argumentation, character, and emotion; the parts of a speech; the plain, middle, and grand styles; how to persuade no matter what audience or circumstances you face; and more. Cicero’s words are presented in lively translations, with illuminating introductions; the book also features a brief biography of Cicero, a glossary, suggestions for further reading, and an appendix of the original Latin texts. Astonishingly relevant, this unique anthology of Cicero’s rhetorical and oratorical wisdom will be enjoyed by anyone who ever needs to win arguments and influence people—in other words, all of us.

Book excerpt: Cicero placed a high value on the importance of mastering the skill of rhetoric, which is the art of using language as a means to persuade. Such a skill was important especially in the practice of law and politics, of which he did both. In the "Treatise of Rhetorical Invention" Cicero outlines his theories on rhetoric in this early composition. In "Topics" we find an exposition of the tools that an orator may avail himself of in crafting a convincing argument. Cicero is thought of as one of the greatest orators of all time and it is due in no small part to his mastery of rhetoric. This collection, translated by C. D. Yonge, will give the reader great insight into the skill of rhetoric as it was thought of and practiced by an early master of the skill.

Book excerpt: Although the Ad Herennium cites Cicero as its author, scholarly research has concluded that the book was written by someone else. Yet, no one has ever attempted to disassociate Cicero's name from the book. Book 3(of four) deals with Deliberative and Epideictic suits; the author mentioning that he will discuss three departments of rhetoric: Arrangement, Delivery, and Memory—leaving Style for the fourth book. In his treatment of the Deliberative speech he discusses Advantage and its subdivisions (Security and Honor). In discussing the Epideictic speech he moves into a deep elaboration of Invention, Arrangement, Delivery and Memory.Contrary to the myth that the Ad Herennium is just a book on rhetoric and language, it is a book on the art of public speaking. It is —really— a practical manual for administrators, managers, executives, paralegals, teachers, professors, judges, attorneys in general, litigators in particular—anyone who wishes to write or give a speech. Though humble in its approach, it delivers greatness.
