Book excerpt: This book was written to help ceramists to understand the subject of rheology as it applies to suspensions. Topics discussed include viscosity and rheology fundamentals, syneresis and dilatancy and their causes and effects in ceramic process systems, the rheological effects of gelation, flocculation, and deflocculation, as well as the different types of viscometers that can be used to measure rheological properties. Many practical considerations are included throughout this book. The discussion in the final chapter covers the methods available to adjust and control suspension rheologies in the ceramic process environment. This book will be valuable reading and a handy reference for all ceramists, including students, technicians, engineers, managers, and artists, who want to learn more about the rheology of suspensions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymerie materials have been replacing other conventional materials like metals, glass and wood in a number of applications. The use of various types of fillers incorporated into the polymer has become quite common as a means of reducing cost and to impart certain desirable mechanieal, thermal, electrieal and magnetic properties to the polymers. Oue to the energy crisis and high priees of petrochemieals, there has been a greater demand to use more and more fillers to cheapen the polymerie materials while maintaining and/or improving their properties. The advantages that filled polymer systems have to offer are normally offset to some extent by the increased complexity in the rheological behavior that is introduced by the inclusion of the fillers. Usually when the use of fillers is considered, a compromise has to be made between the improved mechanieal properties in the solid state, the increased difficulty in melt processing, the problem of achieving uniform dispersion of the filler in the polymer matrix and the economics of the process due to the added step of compounding. It has been recognized that addition of filler to the polymer brings a change in processing behavior. The presence of the filler increases the melt viscosity leading to increases in the pressure drop across the die but gives rise to less die swell due to decreased melt elasticity.

Heterogeneities bought with powders and those inadvertently introduced during processing as well as non-uniform and undefined phase distributions contribute to unreliable processing. Colloidal powder treatments can eliminate many heterogeneities and ensure more uniform phase distributions. To ensure that new heterogeneities are not introduced, colloidally treated powders must be piped, as slurries, directly to a die cavity. Slurry consolidation methods based on particle partitioning, e.g., pressure filtration and centrifugation are emphasized in this review. Interparticle potentials play a dominant role in governing the slurry viscosity, maximum particle packing density and the rheology of the consolidated body. These roles will be reviewed with the objective to understand how damage free bodies can be consolidated from slurries to increase the structural reliability of ceramics and their composites.

Book excerpt: Rheology and deposition behavior of four commercially available thick-film inks and an aqueous alumina slurry were investigated using two different slurry-based deposition systems. The first of these deposition systems, a Micropen, is a commercially available system designed for the deposition of electronic thick film circuits. The second system, referred to as a Robocaster, is a developmental system designed to build thick or structural parts. Slurry rheology was seen to have a minor effect on deposition behavior and the bead shape when deposited using the Micropen. The deposition behavior was instead dominated by drying rate; too rapid of a drying rate led to excessive clogging of the tip. Slurry rheology had a greater impact on the shape of beads deposited using the Robocaster. Highly viscous slurries yielded initially well-defined beads, whereas beads deposited using fluid slurries spread quickly. In both cases, significant spreading occurred with time. These observations only held for slurries with slow drying rates. It was observed that very fluid slurries produced well-defined beads when the drying rate was suitably high.

Book excerpt: This book is primarily an introduction to the vast family of ceramic materials. The first part is devoted to the basics of ceramics and processes: raw materials, powders synthesis, shaping and sintering. It discusses traditional ceramics as well as “technical” ceramics – both oxide and non-oxide – which have multiple developments. The second part focuses on properties and applications, and discusses both structural and functional ceramics, including bioceramics. The fields of abrasion, cutting and tribology illustrate the importance of mechanical properties. It also deals with the questions/answers of a ceramicist regarding electronuclear technology. As chemistry is an essential discipline for ceramicists, the book shows, in particular, what soft chemistry can contribute as a result of sol-gel methods.

SURFACE ROUGHNESS RELATIONSHIP FOR DENTAL CERAMICS In this study, relationship between particle interactions, rheology and surface roughness for dental ceramics was determined. For this purpose IPS Empress 2 veneer powder was chosen and characterized with XRD, SEM, EDS, Zeta Potential and Particle Size measurements. Particle interactions have been interpreted in the light of DLVO Theory for distilled water and electrolyte solutions at different concentrations (0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75,1 M NaCl and CaCl2). The results indicated that interactions between particles change with electrolyte concentration and valency. Electrical Double Layer Thickness (Debye Length) compresses and Energy Barrier height decreases as electrolyte concentration and valency increase mean that there is agglomeration between particles. In order to understand the rheological properties of the system shear rate versus shear stress and shear rate versus viscosity graphs were interpreted for the same environmental conditions, distilled water and electrolyte solutions at different concentrations. It was obtained that at low electrolyte conditions particles formed agglomerates, however at high electrolyte conditions the system reached equilibrium where particles formed gel structures due to their non-Newtonian behaviour. The results obtained from rheological measurements were compared with the results obtained from AFM, profilometer and SEM measurements for the surfaces prepared with IPS Empress 2 veneer powder and it was concluded that in the presence of electrolytes (Na+ and Ca2+) surface roughness increased at low concentrations due to agglomeration of particles whereas surface roughness decreased at high concentrations most probably due to gelation in the system. Moreover, this situation was supported with contact angle measurements where contact angle mean values are high and ditributions are wide at low electrolyte concentrations while contact angle mean values are small and distributions are narrow at high concentrations.
