Book excerpt: Document from the year 2020 in the subject Chemistry - Other, grade: Research, , course: Research, language: English, abstract: A detailed study of the theological modelling of composite propellant slurry based on hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) prepolymer, Dioctyl adipate (DOA) plasticizer, toluene diisocynate curative, ammonium per chlorate (AP) oxidizer and aluminium powder as a metallic fuel is carried out and studied the effect of each of the ingredients on the composite propellant slurry (cps). The effect of temperature on viscosity of polymer and plasticizer system was studied at different temperatures, and torques (shear force). The polymer hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) and plasticizer (DOA) viscosity data showed temperature dependence and independent of the torque (i.e. shear force). Therefore, the viscosity data has been modelled to polynomial model of a fourth order with temperature for polymer and plasticizer. The results showed good agreement between theory and experiment. These polynomial model results have been compared with Arrhenius model. The polynomial model showed better comparison within ± 4 % error compared to Arrhenius model with ± 4 to ± 22 % error over the temperature range of 30 - 70 °C. The viscosity of the mixture was also studied at different weight fractions of the polymer:plasticizer. The viscosity of mixture showed dependence on the weight fraction of the plasticizer and temperature. Rheology concerns itself with the mechanism of flow and deformation of matter. Deformation is a phenomenon, which is associated with a volume element. This term was invented by Prof. Bingham of Lafayette College, Indiana. Significant advances have been made in polymer rheology, in bio-rheology and in suspension rheology. There has been a significant appreciation of the importance of rheology in the chemical processing industry like medicine, paints and printing ink technology etc. and biotechnological industries. It has also made important contributions in food technology, building and structural engineering, cosmetics, drilling operations and oil wells etc.

In an effort to better understand these materials, a two-step process was undertaken. First, the nonlinear behaviour of such materials was determined in a laboratory. Second, experimental measurements were extracted from the literature with respect to shear-free flows of complex materials and simulations were performed for the shear-five flows in question. These flows involve uniaxial extension in the case of fiber spinning and film casting, and biaxial extension in the caw of film blowing. Rheological experiments were conducted on polymer solutions, namely poly(ethylene oxide) and polyacrylamide, at room temperature and on a polypropylene (PP) polymer melt at high temperature, with a Weissenberg rheogoniometer in a laboratory. The shear viscosity and first normal stress difference were measured at varying shear rates. An integral constitutive equation of the K-BKZ type was used to predict the nonlinear behaviour of these materials. Transient regression was performed to find the parameters of the K-BKZ model for the U-Stamylan low-density polyethylene (LDPE), and predictions for steady-state materials functions were given. Fiber-spinning simulations were undertaken for a series of complex materials at a wide range of operating conditions. Film-casting simulations were also undertaken for a series of complex materials. Book excerpt: Using various concentrations of Laponite, results were obtained on an AR1000 rheometer through various testing methods: stress sweep, creep tests, and large amplitude oscillatory shear tests, defined as LAOS. Concentrations of 1%, 2%, 2.5%, 3%, and 4% wt. of Laponite and distilled water solutions were tested. Laponite gels over 1% wt. concentrations were characterized as yield stress materials, as determined by stress sweep, creep test, and LAOS tests. The stress sweeps determined the yield stress, and the creep tests verified the results with a range of creep tests over and below the yield stress discovered in the stress sweep tests. The LAOS tests mapped a specific "fingerprint" of how the Laponite gel behaved on a Lissajous figure of stress and strain. These LAOS results are then fit with an evolution of deformation model in Matlab over various oscillation stresses. The results show that slug slime emulation is possible by altering the Laponite gel's properties with polymers to result in a slug slime equivalent for use in studying slug locomotion.
