Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces applications of RFID on the Internet of things, under the emerging technologies for tag search, anonymous RFID authentication, and identification of networked tags. A new technique called filtering vector (a compact data structure that encodes tag IDs) is proposed to enable tag filtration, meeting the stringent delay requirements for real-world applications. Based on filtering vectors, a novel iterative tag search protocol is designed, which progressively improves the accuracy of search result and reduces the time of each iteration by using the information learned from the previous iterations. Moreover, the protocol is extended to work under noisy channel. The authors also make a fundamental shift from the traditional design paradigm for anonymous RFID authentication by following an asymmetry design principle that pushes most complexity to the readers while leaving the tags as simple as possible. A novel technique is developed to dynamically generate random tokens on demand for authentication. The token-based authentication protocol only requires O(1) communication overhead and online computation overhead per authentication for both readers and tags. Finally, the authors investigate the problem of networked-tag identification. The traditional contention-based protocol design will incur too much energy overhead in multihop tag systems, and a reader-coordinated design that significantly serializes tag transmissions performs much better. In addition, a solution based on serial numbers is proposed to achieve load balancing, thereby reducing the worst-case energy cost among the tags. Designed for researchers and professionals, this SpringerBrief will interest individuals who work in efficiency, security, and privacy. Advanced-level students focused on network design will also benefit from the content.

Book excerpt: RFID and the Internet of Things shows how RFID has transformed the supply chain over the last decade and examines the manufacturing, logistics and retail aspects of RFID. This monograph considers the related cost/benefit of RFID in these business environments. The authors describe a vision of an "Internet of Things", where each participating object has a digital shadow with related information stored in cyberspace. RFID and the Internet of Things introduces the reader to the relevant hardware and software as well as to standards and architectures. It then presents several case studies and uses cases showing how RFID can be used in manufacturing and retail with a focus on intra-enterprise applications and local benefits. The authors move further down the supply chain, discussing RFID applications in logistics and the perspectives for an Internet of Things. This is followed by a discussion of cost/benefit analyses of RFID implementations. The volume discusses possible security and privacy risks of RFID and presents several architecture proposals for a less centralized Internet of Things. The authors conclude with a summary and outlook.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology allows for automatic identification of information contained in a tag by scanning and interrogation using radio frequency (RF) waves. An RFID tag contains an antenna and a microchip that allows it to transmit and receive. This technology is a possible alternative to the use of barcodes, which are frequently inadequate in the face of rapid growth in the scale and complexity of just-in-time inventory requirements, regional and international trade, and emerging new methods of trade based on it. Use of RFID tags will likely eventually become as widespread as barcodes today. This book describes the technologies used for implementation of RFID: from hardware, communication protocols, cryptography, to applications (including electronic product codes, or EPC) and middleware. The five parts of this book will provide the reader with a detailed description of all the elements that make up a RFID system today, including hot topics such as the privacy concerns, and the Internet of Things.

Book excerpt: Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) stores and retrieves data using devices called RFID tags: objects attached to or incorporated into a product, animal or person which communicate with an RFID reader or interrogator. This book proposes a linear two-port model for an N-stage modified-Greinacher full wave rectifier, predicting the overall conversion efficiency at low power levels where the diodes are operating near their threshold voltage. Included is an experimental procedure to measure how impedance modulation in the tag affects the signal at the reader, and a useful tool for choosing the most appropriate impedances.

The wide-ranging applications of IoT, including home appliances, transportation, logistics, healthcare, and smart cities, necessitate security applications that can be applied to every domain with minimal cost. IoT contains three layers: application layer, middleware layer, and perception layer. The security problems of each layer are analyzed separately to identify solutions, along with the integration and scalability issues with the cross-layer architecture of IoT. The book discusses the state-of-the-art authentication-based security schemes, which can secure radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, along with some security models that are used to verify whether an authentication scheme is secure against any potential security risks. It also looks at existing authentication schemes and security models with their strengths and weaknesses. The book uses statistical and analytical data and explains its impact on the IoT field, as well as an extensive literature survey focusing on trust and privacy problems. The open challenges and future research direction discussed in this book will help to further academic researchers and industry professionals in the domain of security. Dr. Brij B. Gupta is an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra, India. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the beginning of 2003, I found a short article about the privacy implications of RFID technology in a newspaper. It raised my interest, and after reading some early research papers on the topic, I thought: “There must exist better solutions. ” I c- cerned myself with the topic in my spare time. After having developed my rst - lutions, I asked my supervisor, Prof. Dr. Paul Muller ̈ , whether I could write a paper about my results. As the topic did not t into any running project or at least the overall research directions of his group, he could have answered no. But instead, he encouraged me to do it. The paper became a success, and many other papers about new concepts and solutions followed. Now the answer is obvious: There exist better solutions. I have dealt with the topic over the past years. Now I want to share the basics as well as current research results with the reader. This book is surely not a bedside reading. But with all the presented concepts, it can broaden the mind of the reader concerning security, privacy, and RFIDsystems. Iwishthe reader many new insights. There are many people I would like to thank. First of all, my thanks go to my ̈ supervisor, Prof. Dr. Paul Muller. He gave me room for creativity and plenty of rope to work on my own.
