The calculus turned out to be an interesting model of computation and became theprototype for untyped functional programming languages. Operational and denotational semantics for the calculus served as examples for otherprogramming languages. In typed lambda calculi, lambda terms are classified according to their applicative behavior. In the 1960s it was discovered that the types of typed lambda calculi are in fact appearances of logical propositions. Thus there are two possible views of typed lambda calculi: - as models of computation, where terms are viewed as programs in a typed programming language; - as logical theories, where the types are viewed as propositions and the terms as proofs. The practical spin-off from these studies are: - functional programming languages which are mathematically more succinct than imperative programs; - systems for automated proof checking based on lambda caluli. This volume is the proceedings of TLCA '93, the first international conference on Typed Lambda Calculi and Applications, organized by the Department of Philosophy of Utrecht University. It includes29 papers selected from 51 submissions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Term rewriting systems developed out of mathematical logic and are an important part of theoretical computer science. They consist of sequences of discrete transformation steps where one term is replaced with another and have applications in many areas, from functional programming to automatic theorem proving and computer algebra. This 2003 book starts at an elementary level with the earlier chapters providing a foundation for the rest of the work. Much of the advanced material appeared here for the first time in book form. Subjects treated include orthogonality, termination, completion, lambda calculus, higher-order rewriting, infinitary rewriting and term graph rewriting. Many exercises are included with selected solutions provided on the web. A comprehensive bibliography makes this book ideal both for teaching and research. A chapter is included presenting applications of term rewriting systems, with many pointers to actual implementations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook with exercises reveals in formalisms, hitherto mainly used for hardware and software design and verification, unexpected mathematical beauty. The lambda calculus forms a prototype universal programming language, which in its untyped version is related to Lisp, and was treated in the first author's classic The Lambda Calculus (1984). The formalism has since been extended with types and used in functional programming (Haskell, Clean) and proof assistants (Coq, Isabelle, HOL), used in designing and verifying IT products and mathematical proofs. In this book, the authors focus on three classes of typing for lambda terms: simple types, recursive types and intersection types. It is in these three formalisms of terms and types that the unexpected mathematical beauty is revealed. The treatment is authoritative and comprehensive, complemented by an exhaustive bibliography, and numerous exercises are provided to deepen the readers' understanding and increase their confidence using types.

Book excerpt: The 7th International Conference on Typed Lambda Calculi and Applications (TLCA 2005) was held in Nara (Japan) from 21 to 23 April 2005, as part of the Joint Conference on Rewriting, Deduction and Programming (RDP 2005). This book contains the contributed papers, and extended abstracts of two invited talks, given by Thierry Coquand and Susumu Hayashi. A short abstract of the joint RDP invited lecture by Amy Felty is also included. The 27 contributed papers were selected from 61 submissions of generally very high quality, and the Program Committee had a hard time making the selection. The editor would like to thank everyone who submitted a paper and to express his regret that many interesting works could not be included. The editor also wishes to thank the invited speakers, the members of the Program and Organizing Committees, the Publicity Chair, and the referees for their joint e?ort towards the success of the conference. The support from the Nara Convention Bureau is gratefully acknowledged. The typed lambda calculus continues to be an important tool in logic and theoretical computer science. Since 1993, the research progress in this area has been documented by the TLCA proceedings. The present volume contributes to this tradition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Curry-Howard isomorphism states an amazing correspondence between systems of formal logic as encountered in proof theory and computational calculi as found in type theory. For instance, minimal propositional logic corresponds to simply typed lambda-calculus, first-order logic corresponds to dependent types, second-order logic corresponds to polymorphic types, sequent calculus is related to explicit substitution, etc.The isomorphism has many aspects, even at the syntactic level:formulas correspond to types, proofs correspond to terms, provability corresponds to inhabitation, proof normalization corresponds to term reduction, etc.But there is more to the isomorphism than this. For instance, it is an old idea---due to Brouwer, Kolmogorov, and Heyting---that a constructive proof of an implication is a procedure that transformsproofs of the antecedent into proofs of the succedent; the Curry-Howard isomorphism gives syntactic representations of such procedures. The Curry-Howard isomorphism also provides theoretical foundations for many modern proof-assistant systems (e.g. Coq). This book give an introduction to parts of proof theory and related aspects of type theory relevant for the Curry-Howard isomorphism. It can serve as an introduction to any or both of typed lambda-calculus and intuitionistic logic. Key features- The Curry-Howard Isomorphism treated as common theme- Reader-friendly introduction to two complementary subjects: Lambda-calculus and constructive logics- Thorough study of the connection between calculi and logics- Elaborate study of classical logics and control operators- Account of dialogue games for classical and intuitionistic logic- Theoretical foundations of computer-assisted reasoning · The Curry-Howard Isomorphism treated as the common theme.· Reader-friendly introduction to two complementary subjects: lambda-calculus and constructive logics · Thorough study of the connection between calculi and logics.· Elaborate study of classical logics and control operators.· Account of dialogue games for classical and intuitionistic logic.· Theoretical foundations of computer-assisted reasoning
