Download or read book The "German Spirit" in the Ottoman and Turkish Army, 1908-1938 written by Gerhard Grüßhaber and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-04-09 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study focuses on the mutual transfer of military knowledge between the German and the Ottoman/ Turkish army between the 1908 Young Turk revolution and the death of Atatürk in 1938. Whereas the Ottoman and later the Turkish army were the main beneficiaries of this selective appropriation, the German armed forces evaluated their (prospective) ally’s military experiences to a lesser extent. Through the analysis of archival and published sources and memoir literature the study provides evidence for the impact of this exchange on the armies of both countries and on the Turkish civil society. Indeed, the officer corps in both countries was a small but influential group of the society for the further development of their nations.

Book Synopsis Constructing a Post-War Order by : Andrew Baker
Download or read book Constructing a Post-War Order written by Andrew Baker and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-05-30 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The years 1942 to 1946 saw the acceleration of World War II, its conclusion, and the construction of a post-war order that was to culminate in the Cold War. Andrew Baker here examines the expansion of US political and economic power, and hegemony during this period, and the extent to which smaller states, particularly Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa, contested this expansion. Through successfully outlining and defending their own notions of sovereignty, property, and commercial rights, they were able to a make a significant contribution towards fashioning a post-war framework more conducive to states than empires. This analysis of the period immediately after World War II will appeal to researchers of history and international relations, as well as those interested in the political economy of the post-war world.
Book Synopsis Toscanini: Musician of Conscience by : Harvey Sachs
Download or read book Toscanini: Musician of Conscience written by Harvey Sachs and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 924 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice Selection Named one of the Best Books of the Year by the Economist and Kirkus Reviews An “extraordinary” biography that “in its breadth . . . reminds me of nothing so much as Robert A. Caro’s The Power Broker” (New York Review of Books). Harvey Sachs’s “monumental” (Alex Ross) biography recounts the sixty-eight-year career of conductor Arturo Toscanini (1867–1957), an artist celebrated for his fierce dedication, photographic memory, explosive temper, impassioned performances, and uncompromising work ethic. Toscanini collaborated with Verdi, Puccini, Debussy, and Richard Strauss; undertook major reforms at La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera; and eventually pioneered the radio and television broadcasts of the NBC Symphony. His monumental achievements inspired generations, while his opposition to Nazism and fascism made him a model for artists of conscience. In this “persuasive and compelling” new biography, Sachs illuminates the “crucial—the central—role Toscanini played in our musical culture for well over 60 years” (New York Times Book Review). Set against the roiling currents of twentieth-century Europe and the Americas, Toscanini is a “necessary” portrait of this “complex, flawed, but noble human being and towering artist” (Wall Street Journal) whose peerless influence reverberates today.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to the Psychology of Religion by : Robert H. Thouless
Download or read book An Introduction to the Psychology of Religion written by Robert H. Thouless and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1972-01-06 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third edition of this successful book, which applies the science of psychology to problems of religion. Dr Thouless explores such questions as: why do people believe? Why are their beliefs often held with irrational strength? How are changes in belief systems related to mental health? What are reasonable attitudes towards alternative belief systems? This edition includes samples of the experimental and statistical studies of religious problems, including the author's own study of the strength of religious beliefs. This edition also pays more attention to the problems of non-Christian religious systems, with special consideration given to the problems of mutual toleration. Finally Dr Thouless considers whether it is reasonable for modern man to adhere to any religious belief system. This is an excellent textbook for students of the social sciences, particularly psychology and theology, and will also interest the general reader who has an intellectual curiosity about religion.
