Book excerpt: Nobody is in doubt as to whether there is need to make the current quality of education being offered at secondary and tertiary levels in science and technology education in Nigeria more relevant, more entrepreneurial in nature and therefore more self sustaining. Desiring to achieve this in the near future, this paper examines how to possibly revitalize Nigeria economy through science and technology education in the 21st century with particular emphasis on the implications it holds for skills acquisition. Possibilities/opportunities of making the science and technology education subjects entrepreneurial in nature were examined and it was concluded that with renewed emphasis on skills acquisition there is hope of revitalizing Nigeria economy through science and technology education. With adequate weighting given to practical and workshop/studio practices, more time allotted to practical/workshop practices, those who offer science subjects allowed to go on Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) and promotion of science and technology education teachers tied to progress of learners in external examination in practical/workshop practices, the nation's economy could be revitalized as individual economy is being revitalized also. The paper however cautions that unless something drastic happens concerning poor knowledge of the subject matter and examination malpractice, every efforts made in this regard may be fruitless.

Book excerpt: Nigeria has a bold national vision of becoming one of the world s top 20 economies by 2020. However, despite being the 8th most populous country in the world, it ranks 41st in terms of GDP and 161st in terms of GDP per capita. Nigeria has long depended on oil for its exports and government revenues. This dependence has led to rent seeking and a reluctance to examine potential avenues for economic diversification. The authors of 'Knowledge, Productivity, and Innovation in Nigeria' believe that the goal of becoming a top-twenty economy can only be achieved if Nigeria makes the transition to a new economy rooted in the 21st century that harnesses the power of knowledge and avoids a static oil-based growth strategy. Knowledge has always been central to development, but new technologies have made it globally accessible. Countries such as the Republic of South Korea, India, and the United States that have exploited new technologies and know-how have pushed their innovation and productivity frontiers. Countries that have failed to do so risk remaining mired in poverty. In order to achieve Vision 2020, Nigeria must move beyond the stop-start patterns of oil-based development that have characterized it since independence. It must create a stable and prosperous economy based on a critical mass of knowledge workers. Knowledge, Productivity, and Innovation in Nigeria examines how Nigeria can prepare for this century and where its leaders can focus to achieve their vision, presenting the experiences of other countries from which Nigeria can learn.

Book excerpt: Revitalizing Nigerian Education in Digital Age: What most of the papers in this book have in common is the concern for the revitalization of Nigerian education in the digital age through ICT and other modern methods of making education functional and effective in the new modernity. While some of the chapters deal with conceptual issues, others consider the various role of education in this digital age and how Nigeria can be relevant. Most of the chapters present well-researched, detailed, and informative papers on how to reposition Nigerian education in the digital age. Specifically, the role of education in bringing Nigerias new world about are discussed in simple language and then taken up in different forms all through the book. Since Nigeria has to act fast and decisively to be on the same development and education wavelength as the other members of todays global family, serious actions are being suggested in this book. Revitalizing Nigerian Education in Digital Age simply means taking the above desiderata seriously. Nigeria has a daunting task here in view of the heavy education burden. This is the message that this book puts across.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A poor economy like that of Nigeria experiences its worse situation in rural areas. With development in science and technical education, it is possible to increase economic activities in the rural areas and thereby improve their economic status. At the secondary school level, we talk of science and technical education and technology takes over as the subjects branch into respective disciplines at the tertiary education level. The present and challenging situation in Nigeria is that of limited scope and scale, limited focus on the unique needs of young Nigerians, poor collaboration and cooperation across the sectors, outdated and theoretical training models and distance from the grassroots. Through appropriate technology, science and technology could be of great use in turning around the economy of the rural populace. This could be done through ICT, construction, energy, cooking, refrigerator, water treatment, sanitation among others. It is recommended that science and technical education in Nigeria should be directed towards addressing economic situation in rural areas and that they should be purposefully directed at empowering the youths with skills that will make them economically relevant and self reliant.

Book excerpt: This report analyzes (a) the characteristics and capabilities of the principal institutions that comprise the science and technology infrastructure in Nigeria, (b) the potential contribution of these institutions to industrial development, and (c) opportunities for bilateral cooperation between these institutions and institutions in the United States. Two companion reports analyze similar activities in Malaysia and Colombia. A fourth report presents a cross-country comparison of some of the principal findings in the three country reports. A final report describes the methodology used in carrying out the country studies. Special attention has been given to the interactions among these institutions and between their activities and the activities of production organizations. The emphasis is on science and technology activities which relate directly and indirectly to manufacturing; to some aspects of agriculture; to the physical infrastructure needed to support industrial development, including transportation, communication, power, and water systems; to development of the natural resource base; and to the education and training of science and technology professionals and skilled labor. Science and technology directed to medicine, public health, reproductive biology, and nutrition are not considered.

Book excerpt: In a world where advanced knowledge is widespread and low-cost labor is readily available, U.S. advantages in the marketplace and in science and technology have begun to erode. A comprehensive and coordinated federal effort is urgently needed to bolster U.S. competitiveness and pre-eminence in these areas. This congressionally requested report by a pre-eminent committee makes four recommendations along with 20 implementation actions that federal policy-makers should take to create high-quality jobs and focus new science and technology efforts on meeting the nation's needs, especially in the area of clean, affordable energy: 1) Increase America's talent pool by vastly improving K-12 mathematics and science education; 2) Sustain and strengthen the nation's commitment to long-term basic research; 3) Develop, recruit, and retain top students, scientists, and engineers from both the U.S. and abroad; and 4) Ensure that the United States is the premier place in the world for innovation. Some actions will involve changing existing laws, while others will require financial support that would come from reallocating existing budgets or increasing them. Rising Above the Gathering Storm will be of great interest to federal and state government agencies, educators and schools, public decision makers, research sponsors, regulatory analysts, and scholars.

This report, strongly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, paints a bleak picture of the future and describes a contested, fragmented and turbulent world. It specifically discusses the four main trends that will shape tomorrow's world: - Demographics-by 2040, 1.4 billion people will be added mostly in Africa and South Asia. - Economics-increased government debt and concentrated economic power will escalate problems for the poor and middleclass. - Climate-a hotter world will increase water, food, and health insecurity. - Technology-the emergence of new technologies could both solve and cause problems for human life. Students of trends, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, journalists and anyone eager for a glimpse into the next decades, will find this report, with colored graphs, essential reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year, the World Bank’s World Development Report (WDR) features a topic of central importance to global development. The 2018 WDR—LEARNING to Realize Education’s Promise—is the first ever devoted entirely to education. And the time is right: education has long been critical to human welfare, but it is even more so in a time of rapid economic and social change. The best way to equip children and youth for the future is to make their learning the center of all efforts to promote education. The 2018 WDR explores four main themes: First, education’s promise: education is a powerful instrument for eradicating poverty and promoting shared prosperity, but fulfilling its potential requires better policies—both within and outside the education system. Second, the need to shine a light on learning: despite gains in access to education, recent learning assessments reveal that many young people around the world, especially those who are poor or marginalized, are leaving school unequipped with even the foundational skills they need for life. At the same time, internationally comparable learning assessments show that skills in many middle-income countries lag far behind what those countries aspire to. And too often these shortcomings are hidden—so as a first step to tackling this learning crisis, it is essential to shine a light on it by assessing student learning better. Third, how to make schools work for all learners: research on areas such as brain science, pedagogical innovations, and school management has identified interventions that promote learning by ensuring that learners are prepared, teachers are both skilled and motivated, and other inputs support the teacher-learner relationship. Fourth, how to make systems work for learning: achieving learning throughout an education system requires more than just scaling up effective interventions. Countries must also overcome technical and political barriers by deploying salient metrics for mobilizing actors and tracking progress, building coalitions for learning, and taking an adaptive approach to reform.
