Book excerpt: A study of literary Naturalism in Spain (1860-1890). This book explores the polemic surrounding the introduction of literary Naturalism in Spain (1860-1890), during which traditional Spanish institutions and traditional forms of authority were displaced by a variety of forces that competed for authoritative status. Of the philosophical, theological, aesthetic, political and social factors which thus came together in a unique confluence of discourses and voices, the author stresses particularly the politicalfactors and the intrusion of the female speaker in late nineteenth-century society. MARY LEE BRETZ is a Professor of Spanish at Rutgers State University, New Jersey.

Book excerpt: Presently, Management has witnessed vast advancements, clearly becoming an area of trans and interdisciplinary knowledge. It has widened its scope from traditional business areas – such as marketing, strategy, management control, accounting and finance, taxation or operations – to other spaces, namely deepening bridges with behavioural sciences, engineering, health, or energy, fostering both quantitative models and methods. Management thinking at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra (FEUC) has followed these trends, enabling students with the essential skills supporting the practice of the profession, both in business and public sector organisations. This book features topical trends of research in Management studies, in which FEUC professors are involved, together with international peers, evidencing the openness of the Faculty to the world. Numerous of the subjects addressed relate to challenges that organisations are already facing or will have to deal with shortly. Therefore, the book not only presents innovative research questions, but it also delivers a practical perspective. Thus, organisations will certainly find here some support to better manage those issues in practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates efforts to promote the political and economic unification of Latin America. Every generation in the region has known some effort toward these goals. There were four major stages. The first endeavors were undertaken by diplomats, the second by idealists, the third by technocrats and the fourth stage is now dominated by pro-unification political leaders. Efforts toward integration promote the economies and political stability of these countries--Latin Americans were among the first of the old "third world" people to advance such programs. The political unification of Latin America has been stymied by the political class but this trend is currently being reversed with the Common Market of the South (MERCOSUR). The recent accession of Venezuela after a grueling political-ideological struggle (examined in the book) has spurred other countries to seek full membership in the group. It is now the third largest trade bloc in the world and is continuing to grow. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last two decades, the advent of cheap, user-friendly video technologies has contributed to a revolution in representational agency. Videos are now made by production units that are at times composed of families, churches, musical groups, community associations or other institutions. Thus, on-demand videos produced and distributed within local and atypical networks profoundly shape contemporary urban imaginaries. This book explores the intertwined relations among infrastructure, technology, and modernity through an ordinary, yet little studied field of "on-demand" audiovisual production, which involves processes of negotiation and interaction between clients and commissioned video makers. On-demand films are considered as a space of collaboration and self-representation, that allows to reflect on the potential of fiction, artifice, and montage to render material desires, aspirations, and ideas of the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the lives of more than thirty-five key personalities in Latin American law with a focus on how their Christian faith was a factor in molding the evolution of law in their countries and the region. The book is a significant contribution to our ability to understand the work and perspectives of jurists and their effect on legal development in Latin America. The individuals selected for study exhibit wide-ranging areas of expertise from private law and codification, through national public law and constitutional law, to international developments that left their mark on the region and the world. The chapters discuss the jurists within their historical, intellectual, and political context. The editors selected jurists after extensive consultation with legal historians in various countries of the region looking at the jurist’s particular merits, contributions to law in general, religious perspective, and importance within the specific country and period under consideration. Giving the work a diversity of international and methodological perspectives, the chapters have been written by distinguished legal scholars and historians from Latin America and around the world. The collection will appeal to scholars, lawyers, and students interested in the interplay between law and religion. Political, social, legal, and religious historians among other readers will find, for the first time in English, authoritative treatments of the region’s essential legal thinkers and authors. Students and other who may not read Spanish will appreciate these clear, accessible, and engaging English studies of the region’s great jurists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Male-male rivalry and female passive choice, the two principal tenets of Darwinian sexual selection, raise important ethical questions in The Descent of Man--and in the decades since--about the subjugation of women. If female choice is a key component of evolutionary success, what impact does the constraint of women's choices have on society? The elaborate courtship plots of 19th century Spanish novels, with their fixation on suitors and selectors, rivalry, and seduction, were attempts to grapple with the question of female agency in a patriarchal society. By reading Darwin through the lens of the Spanish realist novel and vice versa, Travis Landry brings new insights to our understanding of both: while Darwin's theories have often been seen as biologically deterministic, Landry asserts that Darwin's theory of sexual selection was characterized by an open ended dynamic whose oxymoronic emphasis on "passive" female choice carries the potential for revolutionary change in the status of women.
