Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation was to: (1) conduct a systematic review of the single case research examining the effects of praise on student behavior, and (2) conduct a meta-analysis of the single-case research examining the effect of praise that meets the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) standards for design quality and evidence of effects. In study one, the 28 included studies were coded for descriptive features to determine for whom and under what circumstances the effects of praise have been studied, and quality appraisal coding was conducted to determine if the studies met the WWC standards. For study two, four effect size metrics were calculated to determine the overall effects of praise. Additionally, the effects of nine moderator variables were examined. Overall, sufficient empirical evidence exists to recommend praise as an evidence-based practice in classroom settings. More specifically, praise can be recommended as an evidence-based practice for: (a) students with high incidence disabilities, (b) students in elementary classrooms, and (c) modifying social behaviors. There is also sufficient evidence to recommend praise be delivered: (a) contingent upon engagement in the target behavior, and (b) using a variable ratio schedule of reinforcement. The overall effects of praise on student behavior are moderate to strong across all four effect size metrics. The effects of moderator variables are complex. Book excerpt: Recognized as one of the most powerful education reform initiatives in the past decade, the No Child Left Behind Act (2001) was signed into law for the purpose of improving student academic achievement so as to ensure a quality education for all students, including those with disabilities. As teachers work with more students with disabilities in the general education setting, teachers are searching for effective strategies that will decrease problem behavior and increase learning results. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of teacher administered behavior-specific praise on promoting positive behavior in students, as demonstrated by exhibiting on-task behavior and decreasing negative behaviors, in addition to examining the feasibility of delivering it at 1-minute, 3-minute, and 5-minute intervals in three different general or special education classrooms. An elementary school was selected for the site of the study. Three students served as primary participants, and three teachers (i.e., two general education and one special education teacher) served as secondary participants. A single-subject alternating treatments design was used to assess the overall effects of the intervention. Results indicated that teacher administered behavior-specific praise is an effective, easy to use evidence-based practice which can be used by teachers for the purpose of promoting positive academic and social behavior in students, including those who have been and are at risk for being identified as having a disability.

Research on School-wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS) programs has reflected how effective simple principles, such as increasing teacher praise and decreasing teacher reprimands, can be. The current study is a secondary analysis of data originally gathered from 65 teachers and 239 students across three states. Results of these analyses bring principles of effective SWPBS programs and educator needs together by identifying how teacher behaviors correlated with at-risk student behaviors in different ways than the behaviors of students who were not at risk. Using multiple linear regression, we illustrated how students at risk for EBD were more sensitive to teacher praise and reprimands than students who were not at risk, which adds support to SWPBS theory and invites teachers to consider that who they praise and reprimand is just as important as how.

Six teacher participants were trained to provide NCP to the classroom at their free operant level of praises and reprimands directed towards the classroom, either at fixed (NCPf) or variable (NCPv) rates. Class-wide rates of academic engaged time and inappropriate behaviors were collected to examine the student effects of the intervention. In addition, teacher perceptions of their relationships with their students, stress, and job satisfaction were measured both pre- and post- intervention. Treatment fidelity and intervention acceptability data were also examined.Upon implementation of the intervention in each classroom, an immediate and stable increase in AET and decrease in IB was established. Effect sizes were varied. The trends in student behavior were more promising in the NCP variable intervention, suggesting that the variability of the schedule of praise may have a longer lasting effect on student behavior than a fixed schedule. In all NCPf and NCPv classrooms, praise increased from baseline to intervention. Limitations and implications were examined.
