Book excerpt: Excerpt from New d104-Book of Geology: Designed for Schools and Academies In preparing this d104-book of Geology, the general plan of my Manual has been retained. The science is not made a dry account of rocks and their fossils, but a history of the earth's continents, seas, strata, mountains, climates, and living races; and this history is illustrated, so far as the case admits, by means of American facts, without, however, overlooking those of other continents, and especially of Great Britain and Europe. In this Fourth Edition, fifty pages have been added to the size of the work, in order to render the explanations, simpler and more complete, and to give also a fuller account of the kinds of life which contribute to rock-making, of the geographical distribution of marine species, and of the depths of the seas. Each of these topics is illustrated by new cuts, and the last by a general map showing the depth of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans by bathymetric lines, based mainly on that of Mr. H. N. Moseley, of the Challenger expedition. The map of the vicinity of Naples is from Murray's Handbook. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Textbook of Geology, Vol. 1: Physical Geology With this keynote in mind, the attempt is made throughout the book to keep to matters that have a direct bearing on geologic history. The authors consider it a mistake to use the limited space in an ele mentary text for the exposition of scientific matters not directly a part of geology, however interesting they may be in themselves. For this reason the discussion of weather, of which at best only a smattering can be given in a geologic text, has been abandoned. Similarly a detailed discussion of the mechanics of glacier motion, which has inherent inter est but is not essential to an understanding of land sculpture by glaciers, is dispensed with. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of Geology, Vol. 2 HE phenomena of hypogene action considered in the T foregoing pages relate almost wholly to the effects produced at the surface. It is evident, however, that these phenomena chie y arise from movements within or beneath the earth's crust, and must be accompanied by very considerable internal changes in the rocks which form that crust. These rocks, subjected to enormous pressure, have been contorted, crumpled, and folded back upon themselves, as if thousands of feet of solid limestones, sandstones, and shales had been merely a few layers of carpet; they have been shattered and fractured; they have in some places been pushed far above their original position, in others depressed far beneath it: so great has been the compression which they have undergone that their com ponent particles have in many places been rearranged, and even crystallized. They have here and there probably been reduced to actual fusion, and have been abundantly invaded by masses of molten rock from below. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced Text-Book of Geology: Descriptive and Industrial Yet another word: The Author requests his brother geo legists who may glance over these pages to remember that they are not intended to contain an exposition of his own peculiar views, but rather to exhibit an elementary outline of the science as now established by the leading workers in Britain, France, Germany, and America. The main object has been to render the student such assistance as will enable him to proceed in the field as a practical observer, and to read with appreciation the higher treatises, special mono graphs, papers, and new discoveries of others. To further this object mention is made, at the end of each section, of the principal works devoted to the department in question to have done more would have been to enter on the field of speculative geology - a subject that lies beyond the scope of an Educational Text-book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Geology: Intended as an Introduction to the Study of the Rocks and Their Contents This is nominally the fourth edition of a work which first appeared in 1889. But so many additions and alterations have been made that it is practically a new book. The changes were so extensive as to necessitate the resetting in new type of the entire work; and the publishers have taken advantage of this to introduce both larger and clearer type and a larger page. Many new illustrations have also been added, several of these being from photographs taken by myself especially for this book. In Geology, as in all the other sciences, constant and rapid progress is being made. The changes in, and additions to our knowledge of the rocks have been especially great in the strata which form the beginning and the end of the geological series respectively - O-the pre-cambrian and Cambrian Formations at the beginning, and the Glacial Series near the end. Special care has been devoted to bringing these portions of the book up to date. It has been remarked that geology cannot be learnt from boo but it is equally true that geology cannot be learnt without books. Certainly the rocks themselves are the best teachers, but it has taken thousands of years to acquire the power of interpreting the signs of those rocks, and the student must make himself master of the principal facts that the numerous workers in this field of knowledge have already collected. 1 would urge the student to go direct to nature.
