Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays and Reviews I have been asked to add a few words of preface to this volume of Reviews, written by a deceased friend and former pupil. He would have been a distinguished man if he had lived, and those who have an affection for his memory are naturally desirous that he should be known to the world as he was to them. He was taken suddenly from his family and friends in the fulness of health and strength, at a time when the difficulties of his career were over, and he was beginning to reap the harvest of success. Those who had Opportunities of judging were confident that he would soon have attained the highest honours of his profession; and his literary talents, if he had written with his name, would certainly have gained him eminence. He was always going forward, and had he been spared a few years longer would probably have done much more than he did. He often expressed to an inti mate friend the ambition which he felt to produce some permanent work, and would sketch out in conversation a book upon the principal subjects of English politics, which had long been in his thoughts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latest Literary Essays: The Old English Dramatists The publication, in a volume, of the following Essays and Addresses is in accordance with the intention of their author. Most of them had been revised by him with this end in view. The only one of them concerning which there is a doubt, whether he would have published it in its present form, is the paper on Richard III. With this he was not satisfied, and he hesitated in regard to printing it. It has seemed to me of interest enough to warrant its publication.' The Essay on Gray was in large part written more than ten years before it was printed in the New Princeton Review, in 1886. The Essay on the Areopagitica was written at the re quest of the Grolier Club, of New York, for an introduction to an edition of the work specially. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An NYRB Classics Original Simon Leys is a Renaissance man for the era of globalization. A distinguished scholar of classical Chinese art and literature and one of the first Westerners to recognize the appalling toll of Mao’s Cultural Revolution, Leys also writes with unfailing intelligence, seriousness, and bite about European art, literature, history, and politics and is an unflinching observer of the way we live now. The Hall of Uselessness is the most extensive collection of Leys’s essays to be published to date. In it, he addresses subjects ranging from the Chinese attitude to the past to the mysteries of Belgium and Belgitude; offers portraits of André Gide and Zhou Enlai; takes on Roland Barthes and Christopher Hitchens; broods on the Cambodian genocide; reflects on the spell of the sea; and writes with keen appreciation about writers as different as Victor Hugo, Evelyn Waugh, and Georges Simenon. Throughout, The Hall of Uselessness is marked with the deep knowledge, skeptical intelligence, and passionate conviction that have made Simon Leys one of the most powerful essayists of our time.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Review: January 1921 Thus for the self-respecting European of to - day there are only two forms which are really one, the first being prose, and the second I have called unrhymed cadence. The one merges into the other; there is no boundary line between them; but prose, generally, will be used for the more objective branches of writing - for novels, plays, essays, and so on cadence will be used for personal, emotional, lyric utterances, in which the phrasing goes with a stronger beat, and the words live together with an intenser flame. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Reviews of English Poets "Among the amusing and instructive books that remain to be written, one of the most piquant would be a history of the criticism with which the most celebrated literary productions have been greeted on their first appearance before the world." It is quite possible that when Dr. William Matthews began his essay on Curiosities of Criticism with these words, he failed to grasp the full significance of that future undertaking. Mr. Churton Collins frequently declared that "a very amusing and edifying record might be compiled partly out of a selection of the; various verdicts passed contemporaneously by reviews on particular works, and partly out of comparisons of the subsequent fortunes of works with their fortunes while submitted to this censorship." Both critics recognize the fact that such a volume would be entertaining and instructive; but, from another point of view, it would also be a somewhat doleful book. Even a reader of meagre imagination and rude sensibilities could not peruse such a volume without picturing in his mind the anguish and the heartache which those bitter and often vicious attacks inflicted upon the unfortunate victims whose works were being assailed. Authors (particularly sensitive poets) have been at all times the sport and plaything of the critics. Mrs. Oliphant, in her Literary History of England, said with much truth: "There are few things so amusing as to read a really 'slashing article' - except perhaps to write it. It is infinitely easier and gayer work than a well-weighed and serious criticism, and will always be more popular. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the English Classics The purpose of this book is to stimulate, in teachers and students alike, interest in the English Classics selected for use in schools, and to suggest various methods by which these masterpieces may be profitably studied. The book embodies the actual experience of teachers in the classroom, in that the analyses of most of the volumes studied and the accompanying questions have been prepared by men and women who have themselves edited one or more of the Classics and have actually taught them. The work of these collaborators has been brought into some uniformity of method, but Without injuring, it is hoped, the suggestiveness and variety and particular method of each contributor. Two that will probably have most general interest are the reviews of Tennyson's poems and Carlyle's French Revolution. That Mill him self did not think it worth while to republish these is easily comprehensible. They were written simply as reviews, and their subjects lay apart from the sociological questions which towards the end of his life mainly engaged his attention. But for that very reason they have a special interest for the student of his character; and their intrinsic merits, and the fact that in both cases they show an early and in dependent appreciation of two of the greatest English writers of the nineteenth century, will do more than justify their republication. And a similar justification will apply to the other two essays on poetry. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern English Essays, Vol. 1 This new stringency of the periodical page was yet more likely to be felt in a magazine like The Cornhill, which set out to be entertaining first and intellectual afterwards. In its earlier volumes there are solid contributions from Leslie Stephen, who was its editor for some years, Matthew Arnold, and other major essayists; but in style and attack, and economy of expression, they mark a change. And when we come to the weekly reviews, and dis cover men of the Old quarterly calibre, men like Leslie Stephen's elder brother, F itzjames Stephen (who became a famous judge), adapting themselves to a middle article, and making it more damaging than a quarterly review, we realise that the critical headquarters have shifted from the quarterly to the monthly and weekly reviews. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Literature: And Its Place in Popular Education; An Essay Read Before the National Teachers' Association, Boston, August, 1872 A careful examination of the work shows that the selections have been very judiciously made, those passages being preferred which best illustrate the styles of the authors. To the specimens of each author is prefixed a short biographical notice, giving the general character of his works, and sometimes mentioning those of particular merit. To the work is also added an historical introduction, which gives a clear and succinct account of the origin and development of the English language and literature, together with the names of the prominent literary men of England, arranged in chronological order. This history will be found of value to the young student for the purposes of reference. This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First View of English and American Literature This volume is based upon the authors' more advanced History of English Literature. The aim has been to preserve those features of the previous book which have most commended themselves to high-school and academy teachers, to remove everything which they have found too detailed or too difficult for their students, and to add whatever was suggested by their friendly criticism as likely to increase the value of the book in class-room practice. The literary comment has been simplified, partly by omission, partly by the substitution of explicit statement in the place of what was before only suggested. The number of authors treated has been much reduced, and the attention of the student centred exclusively on a few great representative figures. More space has been given to biography and descriptive sketches, especially in the later periods. Each main epoch has been prefaced by a full historical introduction, and summarized in the form of a review-commentary and questions, together with tabular views. Suggestions concerning the best available texts, and the best biographical and critical aids to study, are given at the close of each chapter. A number of portraits are added, taken in each case from an authentic source. For purposes of fuller reference, some authors not treated in the text are included in the tabular views. The first of them served as an introduction to the first volume of Sir Henry Craik's English Prose Selection (Macmillan, 1893). The "Similes of Dante" appeared in the Modern Quarterly for March 1898. "Boccaccio" was read as a Taylorian lecture at Oxford, and published, in most honourable company, with other lectures of the same foundation - Studies in European Literature - at the Clarendon Press, 1900. "Chaucer" (Part of a review of Mr. Skeat's edition) and the article on Mr. Macaulay's Gower are from the Quarterly Review, April 1895 and April 1903.
