Book Synopsis Environmental Contamination and Remediation Practices at Former and Present Military Bases by : F. Fonnum
Download or read book Environmental Contamination and Remediation Practices at Former and Present Military Bases written by F. Fonnum and published by Springer. This book was released on 1998-09-30 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Contamination and Remediation Practices at Former and Present Military Bases outlines the different strategies that are useful in the investigation and subsequent remediation of military bases, Particular attention is paid to the pollution of groundwater. The book contains an excellent review of useful remediation techniques and several examples of their application to polluted military bases. Several mathematical models are demonstrated, showing their predictive value for real examples. A detailed list is given of chemical pollutants that can be found on a military base. Strategies are described for the investigation and determination of the future of a polluted military site. Examples are given, obtained from practical experience of dealing with old, contaminated sites.
Book Synopsis Public Health Risk Assessment for Human Exposure to Chemicals by : K. Asante-Duah
Download or read book Public Health Risk Assessment for Human Exposure to Chemicals written by K. Asante-Duah and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In fact, with the control and containment of most infectious conditions and diseases of the past millennium having been achieved in most developed countries, and with the resultant increase in life expectancies, much more attention seems to have shifted to degenerative health problems. Many of the degenerative health conditions have been linked to thousands of chemicals regularly encountered in human living and occupational/work environments. It is important, therefore, that human health risk assessments are undertaken on a consistent basis - in order to determine the potential impacts of the target chemicals on public health.
Book Synopsis Unexploded Ordnance Detection and Mitigation by : James Byrnes
Download or read book Unexploded Ordnance Detection and Mitigation written by James Byrnes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-19 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters in this volume were presented at the July–August 2008 NATO Advanced Study Institute on Unexploded Ordnance Detection and Mitigation. The conference was held at the beautiful Il Ciocco resort near Lucca, in the glorious Tuscany region of northern Italy. For the ninth time we gathered at this idyllic spot to explore and extend the reciprocity between mathematics and engineering. The dynamic interaction between world-renowned scientists from the usually disparate communities of pure mathematicians and applied scientists which occurred at our eight previous ASI’s continued at this meeting. The detection and neutralization of unexploded ordnance (UXO) has been of major concern for very many decades; at least since the First World war. UXO continues to be the subject of intensive research in many ?elds of science, incl- ing mathematics, signal processing (mainly radar and sonar) and chemistry. While today’s headlines emphasize the mayhem resulting from the placement of imp- vised explosive devices (IEDs), humanitarian landmine clearing continues to draw signi?cant global attention as well. In many countries of the world, landmines threaten the population and hinder reconstruction and fast, ef?cient utilization of large areas of the mined land in the aftermath of military con?icts.

Book Synopsis A Protocol for the Derivation of Environmental and Human Health Soil Quality Guidelines by : Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment. Subcommittee on Environmental Quality Criteria for Contaminated Sites
Download or read book A Protocol for the Derivation of Environmental and Human Health Soil Quality Guidelines written by Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment. Subcommittee on Environmental Quality Criteria for Contaminated Sites and published by Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment. This book was released on 1996 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document provides the rationale and guidance for developing environmental and human health soil quality guidelines for contaminated sites in Canada. It begins with background information on the National Contaminated Sites Remediation Program assessment and remediation framework, including the scientific tools developed to help assess and remediate contaminated sites. Information on the principles behind the soil quality guidelines derivation protocol is also included. This is followed by description of the processes for deriving environmental and human health guidelines. The protocol considers the effects of contaminated soil exposure on human and ecological receptors for given land uses (agricultural, residential/parkland, commercial, and industrial). The final section gives guidance on derivation of the final soil quality guideline. Appendices include information on methods and models employed in the ecological sections of the document, and on check mechanisms for indirect exposure from soil contaminants for the human health guidelines.
