Book excerpt: From the man the Wall Street Journal hailed as "the guru of Revenue Management" comes revolutionary ways to recover from the after effects of downsizing and refocus your business on growth. Whatever happened to growth? In Revenue Management, Robert G. Cross answers this question with his ground-breaking approach to revitalizing businesses: focusing on the revenue side of the ledger instead of the cost side. The antithesis of slash-and-burn methods that left companies with empty profits and dissatisfied stockholders, Revenue Management overturns conventional thinking on marketing strategies and offers the key to initiating and sustaining growth. Using case studies from a variety of industries, small businesses, and nonprofit organizations, Cross describes no-tech, low-tech, and high-tech methods that managers can use to increase revenue without increasing products or promotions; predict consumer behavior; tap into new markets; and deliver products and services to customers effectively and efficiently. His proven tactics will help any business dramatically improve its bottom line by meeting the challenge of matching supply with demand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faced with organizations that are more dispersed, a workforce that is more diverse and the pressure to reduce costs, CEOs and CFOs are increasingly asking what the return on investment is from training and development programmes. Learning Analytics provides a framework for understanding how to work with learning analytics at an advanced level. It focuses on the questions that training evaluation is intended to answer: is training effective and how can it be improved? It discusses the field of learning analytics, outlining how and why analytics can be useful, and takes the reader through examples of approaches to answering these questions and looks at the valuable role that technology has to play. Even where technological solutions are employed, the HR or learning and development practitioner needs to understand what questions they should be asking of their data to ensure alignment between training and business needs. Learning Analytics enables both senior L&D and HR professionals as well as CEOs and CFOs to see the transformational power that effective analytics has for building a learning organization, and the impacts that this has on performance, talent management, and competitive advantage. It helps learning and development professionals to make the business case for their activities, demonstrating what is truly adding value and where budgets should be spent, and to deliver a credible service to their business by providing metrics based on which sound business decisions can be made.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the period between the 1770s and 1840s, through the process of colonial state formation, the early colonial state in India was able to harness and extract vast amounts of agrarian wealth in north India. However, little is known of the histories of the Indian scribes and the role they played in shaping the early patterns of British colonial rule. This book offers a new way of interpreting the colonial state’s origins in north India. It examines how the formation of early agrarian revenue settlements exacerbated an extant late Mughal taxation tradition, and how the success of British power was shaped by this extant paper-oriented revenue culture. It goes on to examine how the service and cultural histories of various Hindu scribal communities fit within broader changes in political administration, taxation, patterns of governance and a shared Indo-Islamic administrative culture. The author argues that British power after the late eighteenth century came as much through bureaucratic mastery, paper and taxes as it did through military force and commercial ruthlessness. The book draws upon private family papers, interviews and Persian sources to demonstrate how the fortunes of scribes changed between empires, and the important role they played at the height of the British Raj by 1900. Offering a detailed account of how agrarian wealth provided the bedrock of the colonial state’s later patterns of administration, this book is a unique and refreshing contribution to studies in South Asian History, Governance and Imperialism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed to assist practitioners in developing interview procedures for their organizations, this work shows how competence-based human resource management techniques can be applied to employment interviews. Research has shown that the traditional interview does not predict employment success as well as the structured interview, while the structured interview is also the method of choice to ensure a fair and nondiscriminatory hiring process. Leading the practitioner through the three-step interview process—preparation, interviewing techniques, and evaluation of applicants—this guide provides sample questions, a case study, and forms to help the reader conduct successful structured interviews. Also included is a chapter on issues related to equal opportunity employment and a comprehensive review of the literature on structured interviewing.
