Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reuse Techniques for VLSI Design is a reflection on the current state of the art in design reuse for microelectronic systems. To that end, it is the first book to garner the input of leading experts from both research and application areas. These experts document herein not only their more mature approaches, but also their latest research results. Firstly, it sets out the background and support from international organisations that enforce System-on-a-Chip (SoC) design by reuse- oriented methodologies. This overview is followed by a number of technical presentations covering different requirements of the reuse domain. These are presented from different points of view, i.e., IP provider, IP user, designer, isolated reuse, intra-company or inter-company reuse. More general systems or case studies, e.g., metrics, are followed by comprehensive reuse systems, e.g., reuse management systems partly including business models. Since design reuse must not be restricted to digital components, mixed- signal and analog reuse approaches are also presented. In parallel to the digital domain, this area covers research in reuse database design. Design verification and legal aspects are two important topics that are closely related to the realization of design reuse. These hot topics are covered by presentations that finalize the survey of outstanding research, development and application of design reuse for SoC design. Reuse Techniques for VLSI Design is an invaluable reference for researchers and engineers involved in VLSI/ASIC design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silicon technology now allows us to build chips consisting of tens of millions of transistors. This technology not only promises new levels of system integration onto a single chip, but also presents significant challenges to the chip designer. As a result, many ASIC developers and silicon vendors are re-examining their design methodologies, searching for ways to make effective use of the huge numbers of gates now available. These designers see current design tools and methodologies as inadequate for developing million-gate ASICs from scratch. There is considerable pressure to keep design team size and design schedules constant even as design complexities grow. Tools are not providing the productivity gains required to keep pace with the increasing gate counts available from deep submicron technology. Design reuse - the use of pre-designed and pre-verified cores - is the most promising opportunity to bridge the gap between available gate-count and designer productivity. Reuse Methodology Manual for System-On-A-Chip Designs, Second Edition outlines an effective methodology for creating reusable designs for use in a System-on-a-Chip (SoC) design methodology. Silicon and tool technologies move so quickly that no single methodology can provide a permanent solution to this highly dynamic problem. Instead, this manual is an attempt to capture and incrementally improve on current best practices in the industry, and to give a coherent, integrated view of the design process. Reuse Methodology Manual for System-On-A-Chip Designs, Second Edition will be updated on a regular basis as a result of changing technology and improved insight into the problems of design reuse and its role in producing high-quality SoC designs.

Book excerpt: Uncertainty in key parameters within a chip and between different chips in the deep sub micron area plays a more and more important role. As a result, manufacturing process spreads need to be considered during the design process. Quantitative methodology is needed to ensure faultless functionality, despite existing process variations within given bounds, during product development. This book presents the technological, physical, and mathematical fundamentals for a design paradigm shift, from a deterministic process to a probability-orientated design process for microelectronic circuits. Readers will learn to evaluate the different sources of variations in the design flow in order to establish different design variants, while applying appropriate methods and tools to evaluate and optimize their design.

Book excerpt: The papers collected in this volume were presented at the 6th European C- ference on Case-Based Reasoning (ECCBR 2002) held at The Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, UK. This conference followed a series of very succe- ful well-established biennial European workshops held in Trento, Italy (2000), Dublin, Ireland (1998), Lausanne, Switzerland (1996), and Paris, France (1994), after the initial workshop in Kaiserslautern, Germany (1993). These meetings have a history of attracting ?rst-class European and international researchers and practitioners in the years interleaving with the biennial international co- terpart ICCBR; the 4th ICCBR Conference was held in Vancouver, Canada in 2001. Proceedings of ECCBR and ICCBR conferences are traditionally published by Springer-Verlag in their LNAI series. Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) is an AI problem-solving approach where pr- lems are solved by retrieving and reusing solutions from similar, previously solved problems, and possibly revising the retrieved solution to re?ect di?erences - tween the new and retrieved problems. Case knowledge stores the previously solved problems and is the main knowledge source of a CBR system. A main focus of CBR research is the representation, acquisition and maintenance of case knowledge. Recently other knowledge sources have been recognized as important: indexing, similarity and adaptation knowledge. Signi?cant knowledge engine- ing e?ort may be needed for these, and so the representation, acquisition and maintenance of CBR knowledge more generally have become important.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Software reuse depicts a great vision for the software industry. It has been widely viewed as a promising way to improve both the productivity and quality of software development. However, despite of the successes we have achieved, there are still many issues that have limited the promotion of software reuse in the real world. Therefore, software reuse has remained an important hotspot of research. ICSR is the premier international conference in the field of software reuse. It has been an important venue for presenting advances and improvements within the software reuse domain, and a powerful driving force in promoting the interaction between researchers and practitioners. The theme of ICSR 10 was "High Confidence Software Reuse in Large Systems. " A high confidence system is one that behaves in a well-understood and predictable fashion. Today’s trends towards widespread use of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) technology, increased integration, continuous evolution, and larger scale are yielding more complex software systems. So, the problem of how to build high confidence complex systems and how to reuse software with a high level of confidence has become a new attractive topic for research. Furthermore, high-level software asset reuse has been a goal for the last 20–30 years, and it can still be considered an unsolved question. Components-based development, MDA-MDE-MDD, extreme programming, and other techniques or methods are promising approaches to software reuse that still need more research. These proceedings report on the current state of the art in software reuse.
