Book excerpt: At the outer edge of the solar system, on the mining planet Tisa, Flint and her mother live in the colony of Swift Springs. Displaced by a nuclear event, Flint's family settled in Swift Springs two generations ago to become miners. Soon Flint will be old enough to begin her apprenticeship at the refinery. But is the home that her family has built for her enough, or will a mysterious, irradiated planet pull her away from them? By following in their footsteps and leaving to forge a new path, is she betraying her family, or honouring their legacy? Exploring notions of home and the desire to leave it, Kristyna Baczynski's first graphic novel is a story of relationships, of time and of the motion of the universe.

Book excerpt: "Geocentricity might well be egocentricity" the phenomenon of retrograde motion is based on our Earth-centered view of the solar system, but the movement and cycles of retrograde planets are based entirely on the apparent motion of the Sun through the zodiac. Sullivan organizes and explains retrograde motion from a systems-view-point the system of the Sun and planets and interprets retrograde planets natally, by progression, and in transit.

Book excerpt: This work presents the state-of-the-art in numerical and analytical techniques as well as future trends associated with "mission design" for libration point orbits. It contains papers explaining theoretical developments and their applications, including the accurate description of some actual libration point missions of ESA and NASA. The existing software in the field and some applications beyond the neighbourhood of the Earth are also presented. Special emphasis is placed on the use of dynamical system methodology in the libration-point-orbits mission design.

Book excerpt: This volume puts together several important lectures on the Hamiltonian Systems and Celestial Mechanics to form a comprehensive and authoritative collection of works on the subject. The papers presented in this volume are an outgrowth of the lectures that took place during the 'International Symposium on Hamiltonian Systems and Celestial Mechanics', which was held at the CIMAT (Centro de Investigacion en Matematicas, Guanajuato, Mexico) from September 30 to October 4, 1991. In general, the lectures explored the subject of the Hamiltonian Dynamics and Celestial Mechanics and emphasized its relationship with several aspects of topology, mechanics and dynamical systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the reasons why the author does not believe the accretion disk origin theory for our solar system. That theory might fit other system, but not ours. The author first shows reasons why the currently accepted theory doesn’t fit. He goes from one facet of the accretion disk theory to another discrediting each in turn. The author then describes his own theory. The author has made a good effort to define a sequence of events that resulted in our solar system. How well his theory is accepted remains to be seen, but he asks for a fair chance for its evaluation. He presents an interesting idea.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last two decades, satellite gravimetry has become a new remote sensing technique that provides a detailed global picture of the physical structure of the Earth. With the CHAMP, GRACE, GOCE and GRACE Follow-On missions, mass distribution and mass transport in the Earth system can be systematically observed and monitored from space. A wide range of Earth science disciplines benefit from these data, enabling improvements in applied models, providing new insights into Earth system processes (e.g., monitoring the global water cycle, ice sheet and glacier melting or sea-level rise) or establishing new operational services. Long time series of mass transport data are needed to disentangle anthropogenic and natural sources of climate change impacts on the Earth system. In order to secure sustained observations on a long-term basis, space agencies and the Earth science community are currently planning future satellite gravimetry mission concepts to enable higher accuracy and better spatial and temporal resolution. This Special Issue provides examples of recent improvements in gravity observation techniques and data processing and analysis, applications in the fields of hydrology, glaciology and solid Earth based on satellite gravimetry data, as well as concepts of future satellite constellations for monitoring mass transport in the Earth system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orbital Mechanics for Engineering Students, Second Edition, provides an introduction to the basic concepts of space mechanics. These include vector kinematics in three dimensions; Newton’s laws of motion and gravitation; relative motion; the vector-based solution of the classical two-body problem; derivation of Kepler’s equations; orbits in three dimensions; preliminary orbit determination; and orbital maneuvers. The book also covers relative motion and the two-impulse rendezvous problem; interplanetary mission design using patched conics; rigid-body dynamics used to characterize the attitude of a space vehicle; satellite attitude dynamics; and the characteristics and design of multi-stage launch vehicles. Each chapter begins with an outline of key concepts and concludes with problems that are based on the material covered. This text is written for undergraduates who are studying orbital mechanics for the first time and have completed courses in physics, dynamics, and mathematics, including differential equations and applied linear algebra. Graduate students, researchers, and experienced practitioners will also find useful review materials in the book. NEW: Reorganized and improved discusions of coordinate systems, new discussion on perturbations and quarternions NEW: Increased coverage of attitude dynamics, including new Matlab algorithms and examples in chapter 10 New examples and homework problems
