People have imagined being able to ask their home computers questions such as "What’s going on in the world?"...’. Originally published in 1984, this book is a fascinating look at the world of memory and computers before the internet became the mainstream phenomenon it is today. It looks at the early development of a computer system that could keep us informed in a way that we now take for granted. Presenting a theory of remembering, based on human information processing, it begins to address many of the hard problems implicated in the quest to make computers remember. The book had two purposes in presenting this theory of remembering. First, to be used in implementing intelligent computer systems, including fact retrieval systems and intelligent systems in general. Any intelligent program needs to use and store and use a great deal of knowledge. The strategies and structures in the book were designed to be used for that purpose. Second, the theory attempts to explain how people’s memories work and makes predictions about the organization of human memory.

The chapters in this collection are based on presentations made at the First Annual Workshop on Theoretical Issues in Conceptual Information Processing (TICIP) grew out of that. It was held in Atlanta, Georgia in March 1984 and included 50 people with roughly the same world view. In particular, the contributors were interested in content-based theories of conceptual information processing. Each chapter addresses some issue associated with the relationships between memory, experience and reasoning.

Book excerpt: A big amount of important, ‘economically relevant’ information, is buried within the huge mass of multimedia documents that correspond to some form of ‘narrative’ description. Due to the ubiquity of these ‘narrative’ resources, being able to represent in a general, accurate, and effective way their semantic content – i.e., their key ‘meaning’ – is then both conceptually relevant and economically important. In this book, we present the main properties of NKRL (‘Narrative Knowledge Representation Language’), a language expressly designed for representing, in a standardised way, the ‘meaning’ of complex multimedia narrative documents. NKRL is a fully implemented language/environment. The software exists in two versions, an ORACLE-supported version and a file-oriented one. Written from a multidisciplinary perspective, this exhaustive description of NKRL and of the associated knowledge representation principles will be an invaluable source of reference for practitioners, researchers, and graduates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a theory of learning new causal relationships by making use of perceived regularities in the environment, general knowledge of causality, and existing causal knowledge. Integrating ideas from the psychology of causation and machine learning, the author introduces a new learning procedure called theory-driven learning that uses abstract knowledge of causality to guide the induction process. Known as OCCAM, the system uses theory-driven learning when new experiences conform to common patterns of causal relationships, empirical learning to learn from novel experiences, and explanation-based learning when there is sufficient existing knowledge to explain why a new outcome occurred. Together these learning methods construct a hierarchical organized memory of causal relationships. As such, OCCAM is the first learning system with the ability to acquire, via empirical learning, the background knowledge required for explanation-based learning. Please note: This program runs on common lisp.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third European Workshop on Case-Based Reasoning, EWCBR-96, held in Lausanne, Switzerland, in November 1996. Case-based reasoning is an appealing technique for dealing with the knowledge acquisition bottleneck in computer applications; solutions to new problems are found by adapting similar experience from the past, called cases. The 38 revised full papers presented were carefully selected from a broad variety of submissions after a thorough refereeing process. The volume refleats the state of the art in case-based reasoning research and applications.
