Book excerpt: This ninth phase of the International Social Security project, which studies the experiences of twelve developed countries, examines the effects of public pension reform on employment at older ages. In the past two decades, men’s labor force participation at older ages has increased, reversing a long-term pattern of decline; participation rates for older women have increased dramatically as well. While better health, more education, and changes in labor-supply behavior of married couples may have affected this trend, these factors alone cannot explain the magnitude of the employment increase or its large variation across countries. The studies in this volume explore how financial incentives to work at older ages have evolved as a result of public pension reforms since 1980 and how these changes have affected retirement behavior. Utilizing a common template to analyze the developments across countries, the findings suggest that social security reforms have strengthened the financial returns to working at older ages and that these enhanced financial incentives have contributed to the rise in late-life employment.

We are told that the earlier we start the better and that the “magic of compounding” will make our dreams come true if we simply trust the stock market and our investment advisor. But for most people it’s simply not possible. People in their twenties are often saddled with student debt and may be struggling to find suitable full-time employment. Saving for retirement is the last thing on their minds, as it should be. Then in our thirties and forties we tend to do things like get married, have kids, and buy houses. All these things cost a lot of money! So for many people there simply isn’t any money left to put away for retirement. Therefore many of us become procrastinators when it comes to saving for retirement. But there is hope. This book will take you step-by-step though planning and saving for retirement starting in your fifties and the best way to fund your retirement years. It is designed for people approaching retirement who want to ensure it is comfortable and stress-free.

Variations in retirement age are examined: that taken by retirees and that planned by people currently in the labour force. Also discussed is the return to paid work after initial retirement and the conditions governing this return. The study exposes the financial situation of retirees and analyses retirees' perception of their financial situation at the time of the survey compared to their situation twelve months before retirement.

This short, accessible book brings together what we know about the changes taking place, as well as what can be predicted; much remains uncharted territory.

Vettese will show you how to mitigate risk and secure your financial future in these unpredictable times. As COVID-19 rocks the economy in an unprecedented black swan event, retirees and those who are preparing to retire need answers to pressing questions about their financial futures. Originally published in 2018, the second edition of Retirement Income for Life, has been completely revised and updated, and now includes: New chapters on early retirement, retiring single, what to do when one spouse dies young, and more. Three strategies for mitigating your personal financial risk in the current downturn in equities and other investment products. Advice on how to plan for (and even benefit from) the coming bear market, resulting from COVID-19, which will create unprecedented equity buying opportunities, possibly as early as 2021. Information on the impact of unbearably low interest rates on annuities and fixed income investments and what to do if you hold them. The reasons retirees should be deferring CPP until age 70 and why the case for this is stronger than ever. Author Frederick Vettese demystifies a complex and often frightening subject and provides practical, actionable advice based on five enhancements the reader can make to mitigate risk and secure their financial future. With over one thousand Canadians turning 65 every day, the cultivation of good decumulation practices — the way in which you draw down assets in retirement, ideally to have a secure income for the rest of your life — has become an urgent matter that no one can afford to ignore.

Book excerpt: "Essential reading for decision-makers.... When Leech talks, politicians listen. When he writes a book, it's worth buying."--Toronto Star Over the next 20 years more than 7 million Canadian workers will retire. Baby boomers, the 45- to 65-year-olds who account for 42% of the country's workforce, will join the largest job exodus in Canadian history, moving to the promised land of retirement. Unless our crumbling pension system is reformed, many of these retirees will find this dreamland a bewildering and disappointing mirage. In the early 1980s, consumers were setting aside 20% of their disposable incomes to their retirement plans; today the savings rate is a threadbare 2.5%. Retirement savings plans meant to build Canadians' personal war chests for their final years have failed to live up to their cheery promises of early retirement "freedom"--market returns are low, and financial fees are climbing. Moreover, retirement plans are now being compromised by high pension obligations and a shrinking workforce. Canada has the capacity to diffuse this ticking pension time bomb with some hard choices, posits Leech. It's time for businesses, governments, unions, and employees to face these options and fix--and ultimately save--our pensions system.

Book excerpt: This book attempts to document the ongoing, and especially the most recent, transformation of retirement in Canadian society. Such transformation is coming about because of such factors as the growing number of women retirees, changing economic conditions, types of jobs being created, involuntary or early retirement, and restrained government spending. The book examines changes in the transition to retirement along three dimensions: the timing of retirement, and specifically the trend toward retirement at younger ages; the process of retirement, sometimes preceded by a period of unemployment or non-standard employment; and the financing of retirement, including the sources of income and the distribution of income among retiree groups.
