Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Objectives: To measure the tensile strength of e.max copings cemented with resin, calcium silicate and calcium phosphate cements following thermocycling. Methods: 40 extracted non-carious mandibular premolar teeth were examined and selected using Keyence microscope for no carious cracks etc.were mounted in acrylic. The teeth were placed in a lathe and prepared to uniform dimensions (22° total taper) using a flat-end tapered diamond bur (846.11.025HP, Brasseler) and a 3mm preparation height. The surface area of the prepared surface was calculated with digital microscopy. The teeth were scanned with a Cerec 3 (Sirona) digital scanner. E.max crowns were milled using Cerec 3 mill (Sirona) and sintered in a Programmat CS2 oven (Ivoclar Vivadent). The crowns (n=10) were then cemented with Activa Bioactive (PulpDent; bioactive cement), Ceramir Crown & Bridge (Doxa; bioactive cement), Multi-Link Automix (Ivoclar Vivadent; self-etch resin cement), or RelyX Unicem 2 (3M ESPE; self-adhesive resin cement) cement. Monobond Plus (Ivoclar Vivadent) was applied to the e.max copings in the Activa Bioactive, Multi-link Automix and RelyX Unicem 2 groups. Crowns were allowed to self-cure under a 2.5kg weight. The crowns were stored in a moist bag for 24hours at 37°C, thermocycled for 10,000cycles from 5-500°C with a 30second dwell time. The specimens were placed in a custom fixture in a universal testing machine and loaded in tension at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min until debonding. The retention (MPa) at debonding was determined from the maximum recorded tensile force and surface area of the preparation. Data were compared with a 1-way ANOVA and Tukey analysis (alpha=0.05). Results: The mean values of crown retention ranged from 0.45 (Ceramir) to 1.91 MPa (Unicem). The Unicem 2 cemented copings demostrated the highest bond strength, however the bond strength was not significantly different from the other groups except for Ceramir. Conclusions: One of the bioactive cements produced statistically similar crown retention strength as both the reference resin cements.

Book excerpt: Objectives: To measure retention of lithium disilicate (IPS e.max CAD, Ivoclar Vivadent) and zirconia reinforced lithium disilicate (CELTRA [TM] DUO, Dentsply) copings luted using resin cements and resin-modified glass ionomer cement. Methods: 110 Extracted human, non-carious mandibular 2nd premolars (n=10) were embedded in PVC cylinders with acrylic resin and placed into a lathe to produce a uniform crown preparation (22°-convergence & 3mm-height). Following the orientation groove placement (69L bur), preparations were scanned and milled using a CEREC 3D/Sirona machine to produce e.max and CELTRA [TM] DUO crowns. Preparations were imaged with a digital microscope (Keyence/VHX-600-20X) and the surface area of each crown was calculated. IPS e.max crowns and CELTRA [TM] DUO crowns were cemented using the cements as in Tables 1 & 2. Specimens were stored (distilled water/37°C/24h) and thermocycled (10,000cycles/5-50°C/30secs) before debonding in tension at crosshead speed-5mm/min (INSTRON Model/5565). The bond strength was calculated by dividing the failure load with preparation surface area. The CELTRA [TM] DUO and e.max data were compared separately with 1-way ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc analysis (alpha= 0.05). Results: The simulated crown strength test results for e.max were: Calibra=4.89±2.35a; ExpE(TE)=3.70±2.08a,b; ExpSE=3.18±2.03a,b RelyXLP=3.11±1.99a,b; ExpE(Self- Etch)=2.74±1.23a,b; Multilink=2.66±1.72a,b; RelyXU=2.65±1.46a,b; RelyXLP/HF=1.91±0.70b. For CELTRA [TM]: Exp/S=4.73±2.45a; Exp/S/E=4.40±1.76a,b; RelyXLP/ HF=3.34±1.65a,b, c; Exp=1.79±0.70b,c; and RelyXLP=0.95±0.58c. The ANOVA showed some significant differences between groups (p=0.01) where the same letter denotes similar groups. Conclusions: The Calibra material resulted in significantly higher retention with the than RelyXLP/HF for the coping fabricated from e.max. The experimental resin cement with silane when compared to Exp and RelyXLP resulted in significantly higher test retention strength for the CELTRA [TM] DUO.

Book excerpt: Clinicians for a single tooth restoration, due to improved esthetics, often select all ceramic crowns. Zirconium Oxide has been utilized for many years to full fill the requirement of esthetics, high mechanical properties and biocompatibility. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of different surface treatments and luting agents on retention of a zirconium oxide crown. Material and Methods: Ninety extracted teeth were obtained. Teeth were mounted in Ortho JetTM resin (Lang Dental Manufacturing Co., Inc. IL, USA). Occlusal surface was cut flat using Isomet (Buhler Ltd). Diamond burs were used to cut axial walls under water spray at an angle of 20 degrees using Milling Machine (Shop-Task Modle 12-22). Impressions were made with Aquasil monophase and XLV (Destply International, York, PA) and poured with ADA Type IV gypsum. CAD/CAM design was used to fabricate Zirconia copings with 1 mm of marginal width, and a hole with 2mm in diameter for crown pull test. Fifty microns of space were incorporated into the crowns for cement thickness. The intaglio surfaces of crowns were treated with Silica-modified Al203 and Al203. Crowns were cemented with different luting cements such as Panavia F2.0, RelyXTM Unicem 2 and Duo-linkTM under 2500 gram pressure. Specimens were restored in distilled water for 3 days. All groups were thermocycled (5000 cycle) and fatigue loaded for 100,000 cycles while emerged in distilled water. Two-Way ANOVA and One-way ANOVA was used to analyze effect of different surface treatments and cements on retention of Y-TZP crowns and followed by Tukey's post hoc test. Also, Two-way ANOVA was used to evaluate interaction between internal fit, axial wall height, total surface area of prepared tooth and crown retention in all the tested groups. Surface treatment increased crown retention, but it was not statistically significant (p>0.05), except Duo-Link cement group (p

They also exhibit excellent aesthetic outcomes, and life-like translucency. Moreover, glass ceramics can provide better adhesion to the underlying tooth preparation, compared with metal-bonded ceramics and oxide ceramics. This is achieved by application of HF etching and silanization, followed by bonding with resin cement. The resin cement is applied as the means to provide a seal, adhesion and 'filler' in the small space that exists between a restoration and prepared tooth. These unique properties have given rise to expanded restoration designs for glass ceramics in comparison to other ceramics, e.g., veneers, inlays or onlays. Hence, durable and stable adhesion is strongly required for the long-term success of these restorations. The aim of this project was to evaluate the durability of adhesion between CAD/CAM ceramics and resin cements as well as the effect of different factors on long-term ceramic adhesion. In the first experiment, two bonding models were compared and contrasted using a microtensile bond strength test. Two surface treatments and two resin cements were also examined. Ceramic to ceramic, as a bonding model, was found to be better than a ceramic to resin composite model. Surface treatments and resin cements had a significant effect on the microtensile bond strength. The second experiment aimed to evaluate the stability of long-term adhesion using six resin luting cements when bonded to three different CAD/CAM ceramics in water over 12 months. According to the outcomes of this study, VITA Suprinity(R) and VITA Enamic(R) demonstrated better long-term adhesion compared to IPS e.max(R) CAD. Furthermore, the microtensile bond strengths of ceramic and resin cement decreased up to 3 months but thereafter became relatively stable. Different resin cements showed different bonding behaviour during prolonged storage time. The third study examined the effect of two etching times on long-term ceramic adhesion and the effect of six resin luting cements on durability of adhesion. This study indicated that prolonged etching time could increase the microtensile bond strength of glass ceramics in the short-term, however, different etching times did not have an obvious influence on the long-term adhesion. In the fourth experiment, an evaluation of sorption, solubility and dimensional change of six resin luting cements immersed in various storage media was undertaken. Significant differences were observed in the sorption, solubility and dimensional change of the cements when exposed to the different storage media over time. The objective of the last experiment was to evaluate the effect of immersion time and media on fracture toughness of six resin cements. It was concluded that fracture toughness varied among the cements and the value decreased over time. Furthermore, the three storage media evaluated in this study seemed to not have had a significant effect on the fracture toughness. It was concluded that, in general, lower sorption, solubility and dimensional change in resin cements seems to produce a higher fracture toughness and microtensile bond strength to glass ceramics.
