Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Retail Store Management According to the census of 1910, there were in the United States 1,195,029 retail dealers. In addition to this great number of people engaged in conducting stores of one kind or another, there were enumerated 921,130 salespeople and 387,183 clerks in stores. But to get an idea of the total number of people employed in the retail business in this country there should be added to the above the number of deliverymen, laborers, stockroom workers, porters, janitors, cleaners, engineers, carpenters, display men, advertising men, floor managers, bookkeepers, and so on. It is safe to say that there are now more than 3,000,000 people employed in the retail trade. Not an insignificant number! In a comparison of the retail group with other industrial groups of workers, it will be found that farmers and farm laborers are the only classes that exceed retailers and retail employees. No single line of manufacture approaches this total. The number of people employed in the transportation of goods also falls short of this number. Yet those facts seem hardly to have been realized by anyone. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Retail Selling and Store Management: Prepared in the Extension Division of the University of Wisconsin The text attempts to treat of all of the more important activities of a typical retail establishment. Because of the number of these activities it is impossible to consider all of them in detail; some are but briefly discussed. The purpose has been to treat fully of those activities with which sales people are closely connected, and then to treat in less detail of the other activities, of which salespeople should have some knowledge but with which they are not immediately concerned. Some subjects, however, have been given ex tended consideration, that are ordinarily thought of as being of interest alone to the store manager or owner. Detailed treatment has been accorded them because of the growing realization that selling efficiency depends partly on the sales person's knowledge of, and sympathy with, the general store policy, and because wide knowledge of the business is essential for the employe who hopes for advancement and success. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Emerging Approaches to Retail Outlet Management In many industries, products are offered to consumers through company controlled retail outlets. Some examples are supermarket chains, gaso line, banks, and fast foods, where the outlets are supermarkets, service stations, branch banks and franchised restaurants respectively. As in other industries, the problems of retail outlet management can be classified into three groups strategic planning, tactical decisions and operational control. The strategic planning questions are How many outlets should be built in the next Y years? In what cities (markets) should they be built? When? The tactical decisions concern the selection of specific sites What is the potential of a specific site? What is the impact of changes in the environment on site potential, e.g. Construction of a motel on gas station sales? What is the impact of an outlet on a neighboring outlet? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Expenses in Operating Retail Grocery Stores What does it cost to Operate a retail grocery store How often should the stock be turned What are the average sales per salesperson? In order to answer such questions as these and to learn the best practice in store management, the Bureau is collecting exact figures and other specific information from retail grocers. A preliminary summary of the figures which have been obtained up to the present time is presented in this bulletin. The Bureau of Business Research, it may be explained for the benefit of those who are not already familiar with its work, was established in 1911 hy'the Graduate School of Business Administration of Harvard University as an agency for the scientific study of business methods and problems. Because of the need for scientific research in marketing, the Bureau began with that subject. The retail shoe trade was first investi gated, and in June, 1914, a Similar study of the retail grocery trade was begun. The Shoe research is now being extended to the marketing of Shoes by wholesalers and manufacturers. Later other branches of whole sale and retail trade will be studied. The grocery research is thus part of a comprehensive study of the subject of marketing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chain Stores: Their Management and Operation The purpose of this book is to set forth the principles of chain store operation, organization, management, and control. It is intended not nly for the use of the executive at chain store headquarters, but it is also particularly addressed to the branch store manager and his assistants. Furthermore, it is hoped that the book will prove stimulating to independent retailers and to others who are interested in the possibilities offered by the chain store movement. In the opinion of the authors, this movement is characteristic of all that is best in tendencies towards combination and scientific control. It is thoroughly American. It stands for scientific management as applied to the great function of retail merchandising. Although this movement is still in its infancy, the chain store is probably the most highly developed exemplar of modern distribution methods. The first chapter is offered as a brief summary of findings, the intention being to give the reader a perspective of the subject before he comes to the more specific and detailed examination of the various phases of the problem. As a further means of clarifying the reader's ideas, an outline is placed at the head of each chapter, setting forth its main points in topical form. It is hoped that these outlines will prove valuable for anyone desirous of obtaining in the most direct fashion a comprehensive knowledge of the subject. Without the assistance of many friends it would have been impossible to complete this work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Retail Grocery Stores: A Study of Certain Problems of the Retail Grocer in New York City; Including the Results of Investigations Conducted During the War Period It is the aim of this bulletin, first, to present to the consumer certain viewpoints on the problems of the retail grocer and their reaction on the prices he pays for his food, and further to set before the grocer himself the results of investigations made in May, 1918, of a representative number of typical grocery stores in New York City. Conditions or type and quantity of products purchased may differ for other cities, but with the data given for guidance it is anticipated the grocer can compare the status of his own business and perhaps discover one or two new angles from. Which to approach his own problems. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
