This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Results of the First Joint Us-USSR Central Pacific Expedition (Berpac): Autumn 1988 The ocean is able to assimilate a certain amount of anthropogenic compounds due to self-purification without visible deterioration of the ecosystem. However, continuous increase in the flux of pollutants to the ocean creates the need for study of the resistance of marine ecosystems to anthropogenic impacts. Investigations of ecological consequences and elucidation of causal relationships between the impact levels and adverse biological effects are only poorly understood for the marine environment. The study of these interactions and responses is interdisciplinary in character and covers different fields of biology, ecology, chemistry, and physics of the sea. The dynamics of marine ecosystems, including biological and physical processes and biogeochemical cycles, are closely related to changes in the climate of the Earth. The predicted global warming may have a pronounced effect on certain vital processes in the World Ocean, especially the resistance of its ecosystems to anthropogenic contamination. This is because the living ocean determines, to a great degree, the normal functions of the Earth's climatic system. Long term observations of physical, geochemical, and hydrobiological processes are necessary for the assessment of ecological consequences of contamination in the ocean environment and isolation of local anthropogenic effects compared to the effect of climatic variability. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pacific Arctic region is experiencing rapid sea ice retreat, seawater warming, ocean acidification and biological response. Physical and biogeochemical modeling indicates the potential for step-function changes to the overall marine ecosystem. This synthesis book was coordinated within the Pacific Arctic Group, a network of international partners working in the Pacific Arctic. Chapter topics range from atmospheric and physical sciences to chemical processing and biological response to changing environmental conditions. Physical and biogeochemical modeling results highlight the need for data collection and interdisciplinary modeling activities to track and forecast the changing ecosystem of the Pacific Arctic with climate change.
Book Synopsis The Bering Sea Ecosystem by : National Research Council
Download or read book The Bering Sea Ecosystem written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-05-08 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bering Sea, which lies between the United States and Russia, is one of the most productive ecosystems in the world and has prolific fishing grounds. Yet there have been significant unexplained population fluctuations in marine mammals and birds in the region. The book examines the Bering Sea ecosystem's dynamics and the relationship between man and the ecosystem, in order to identify potential reasons for the population fluctuations as well as identify ways the Sea's living resources can be better managed by government.
