Book Synopsis Impacts of Colombia's Current Irrigation Management Transfer Program by : Douglas L. Vermillion
Download or read book Impacts of Colombia's Current Irrigation Management Transfer Program written by Douglas L. Vermillion and published by IWMI. This book was released on 1998 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a significant gap of knowledge about actual results of irrigation management transfer. This includes the questions: Which strategies work? Which don't? and What prerequisites are necesssary to support sustainable local management of irrigation? This report examines the context of transfer, the basic transfer strategy, powers and functions devolved, and the impacts of transfer on irrigation management and irrigated agriculture in three sample irrigation districts of Colombia-the RUT, Rio Recio, and Samaca. data on performance of these schemes were analyzed for 4 or 5 years before and after transfer. Two additional schemes, San Rafael and Maria La Baja, which were transferred just prior to this study, provided a comparison of performance between transferred and nontransferred schemes, form the period of analysis.

Book Synopsis The IIMI Water Balance Framework by : C. J. Perry
Download or read book The IIMI Water Balance Framework written by C. J. Perry and published by IWMI. This book was released on 1996 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outlines the IWMI Water Balance Framework, which identifies sources, uses and reuses of water. The framework will be of interest to those involved in the design of irrigation projects and in the formulation of improvements to existing infrastructure of operational rules. Managers of irrigation projects will also find it useful for interpreting water use efficiency, or for identifying interventions to improve the efficiency and sustainability of their projects.
Book Synopsis Farmer-based Financing of Operations in the Niger Valley Irrigation Schemes by : Charles L. Abernethy
Download or read book Farmer-based Financing of Operations in the Niger Valley Irrigation Schemes written by Charles L. Abernethy and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2000 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report deals with some experiences of a set of irrigation systems situated in the Republic of Niger, along both banks of the Niger River. All these systems draw water from the river through low-lift, electrically powered pumping stations, which have been installed by the Government of Niger over the past 30 years. Irrigation of this kind is not a tradition in Niger. The introduction of this technology caused considerable changes in the way of life of local communities.

Book Synopsis The Value of Using Hydrological Datasets for Water Allocation Decisions: Earth Observations, Hydrological Models and Seasonal Forecasts by : Alexander José Kaune Schmidt
Download or read book The Value of Using Hydrological Datasets for Water Allocation Decisions: Earth Observations, Hydrological Models and Seasonal Forecasts written by Alexander José Kaune Schmidt and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-11-21 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An increasing number of hydrological datasets from earth observations, hydrological models and seasonal forecasts have become available for water managers, consultants and the general public. These datasets are state-of-the-art products which are usually accessible online and may contribute to develop hydrological studies and support water resources management. However, the added value of these datasets has not been completely explored in decision-making processes. Research studies have assessed how well data can help in predicting climate, but there is a lack of knowledge on how well data can help in water allocation decisions. This work provides numerical tools, methods and results to evaluate the value of using hydrological datasets to support water allocation decisions at river basin and irrigation district scale. An integrated approach is used to predict climate, improve decisions and reduce negative impacts. Results show that investing in hydrological data with finer spatial and temporal resolution and longer periods of record improves water allocation decisions and reduces agricultural production loss in large irrigation schemes. Using river discharge data from hydrological models and global precipitation enhances irrigation area planning when little in-situ data is available. Moreover, using seasonal streamflow forecasts improves available water estimates resulting in better water allocation decisions. The framework was tested in Costa Rica, Colombia and Australia, but can be applied in any case study around the world.

Book Synopsis Case Studies in Participatory Irrigation Management by : David Groenfeldt
Download or read book Case Studies in Participatory Irrigation Management written by David Groenfeldt and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2000 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Water is a vital element for agricultural production and for economic development in general. However, the spatial and temporal distribution of water in Mexico restrains its use. Because of this distribution, it has been necessary to build a large infrastructure to capture, store, and allot this element among water users." Around the world, countries that once promoted more government involvement in irrigation management are adopting new policies that do just the opposite, creating incentives for farmers to take over the management of operations and maintenance, while government agencies focus on improving the management of water at the main system level. Is this just another management fad; or will the pendulum that is now swinging toward greater management control by farmers soon swing back the other way, toward greater state control? This volume reports on four countries where the state's role in irrigation management has undergone fundamental change and where the result has been a much greater management role for farmers. These studies address the political antecedents of participatory irrigation management (PIM) policies, the process of implementing the policies, and the second-generation challenges of sustaining PIM. These experiences will prove useful to policymakers and irrigation professionals who are facing similar challenges in their own countries.
