The survey was conducted aboard the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) research vessel Pandalus using a 400-mesh Eastern otter trawl (large-mesh trawl). In 2018, the survey caught 12,568 male Tanner crab of which 348 were of legal size, ≥114mm (4.5 in), to produce a mean catch per unit effort (CPUE) of 18.06 legal-size crab/nmi and yielded an abundance estimate of 222,852 legal-size crab. In 2019, the survey caught 1,682 male Tanner crab of which 421 were of legal size to produce a mean CPUE of 22.17 legal-size crab/nmi and yielded an abundance estimate of 273,511 legal-size crab. The 2017, 2018, and 2019 survey results produced a 3-year mean of 207,109 legal-size male crab which allowed the standard noncommercial fisheries to occur for the 2019–2020 season. In 2018, the survey caught 4,193 female Tanner crab of which 1,566 were mature to produce a mean CPUE of 82.25 mature female crab/nmi and yielded an abundance estimate of 1,014,869 mature female crab. In 2019, the survey caught 2,660 female Tanner crab of which 2,295 were mature to produce a mean CPUE of 120.66 mature female crab/nmi and yielded an abundance estimate of 1,488,880 mature female crab. Abundance estimates of legal-size male Tanner crab were slightly above the long-term mean, and mature female Tanner crab were substantially above the long-term mean of the survey time series.

Book excerpt: This paper presents new information gathered since the previous report on offshore tanner crab fishery development in 2000. Results of trap & trawl surveys, landings from an experimental trap fishery, and by-catch from groundfish fisheries are used to examine distribution of tanner crabs off the British Columbia coast and to identify areas with potential to support a commercial fishery. Landings & observer data from the experimental fishery are used to examine impacts of a directed trap fishery on tanner crabs and other species caught incidentally. Landings from the experimental fishery & other offshore fisheries are used to describe impacts of these fisheries on the tanner crab resource. New information is used to critically examine the existing assessment framework and verify biological assumptions employed to date. Preliminary biomass estimates are calculated from catch rates in the industry trap survey and swept-area abundance estimates from trawl surveys. Finally, recommendations are made to continue exploring the potential for development of an offshore tanner crab fishery.

Book excerpt: A bottom trawl survey was conducted from August 29 to September 6, 2017, to estimate density and infer abundance of Tanner crab Chionoecetes bairdi in Kachemak Bay within the Southern District of the Cook Inlet Area. The survey was conducted aboard ADF&G's research vessel Pandalus using a 400-mesh Eastern otter trawl (large-mesh trawl). The survey caught 1,481 male Tanner crab of which 137 (9%) were of legal size (114 mm carapace width or greater) to produce a mean CPUE of 10.13 crab/nmi (CV = 0.52) and yielded an abundance estimate of 124,965 legal crab. Legal male Tanner crab were caught at 11 of the 38 stations with 90% of the total legal males caught at only 5 stations. The survey caught 1,350 female Tanner crab of which 348 (26%) were mature to produce a mean CPUE of 24.08 crab/nmi (CV = 0.50) and yielded an abundance estimate of 297,126 mature crab. Abundance estimates of legal male and mature female Tanner crab were well below the long-term average of the survey time series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large-mesh bottom trawl survey of Tanner crab Chionoecetes bairdi was conducted in 2020 in the Prince William Sound Area (PWSA; Registration Area E) with the objective of establishing protocols for generating Tanner crab abundance estimates for a newly established survey area. New survey areas in PWSA were developed to assess new commercial fishery districts that were proposed at the 2021 Alaska Board of Fisheries meeting. Proposed fishery districts encompass historical fishing areas and areas fished in the recent commissioner’s permit fishery. Methodology from the historical PWSA trawl survey was applied to develop new trawl stations with the goal of calculating catch per unit effort (CPUE) to estimate abundance of historical legal size and legal-size male Tanner crab in the surveyed area. The 2020 survey produced a CPUE for male Tanner crab that were of the historical legal size of 28.4 crab per nmi2, which was the third lowest observation for any Alaska Department of Fish and Game trawl survey in the PWSA. The estimated abundance of historical legal-size male Tanner crab was 8,214 crab in the survey area, and the estimated abundance for legal-size male Tanner crab was 35,920 crab in the survey area.

Book excerpt: In Reproduction and Development of Marine Invertebrates a group of internationally recognized researchers assesses the state of current knowledge in the field and identifies future avenues of research. Comprehensive in scope, the book treats all levels of biological organization, from the molecular level to communities of organisms. After a brief historical overview that identifies the conceptual underpinnings of twentieth-century invertebrate zoology and embryology, the book is organized by developmental stages. The authors first present chapters on oogenesis, spermatogenesis, fertilization, and embryonic development. A subsequent section--arranged phylogenetically to encompass annelids, priapulans, molluscs, bryozoans, and echinoderms--covers larval morphology and evolution. The final section treats larval or adult populations and includes new information on the role of hydrodynamics to aid in the understanding of larval dispersal and settlement. Reproduction and Development of Marine Invertebrates is the first book of its kind to be published since 1978. Extensivelyillustrated with more than a hundred line drawings and photos--including sixty high-resolution electron micrographs--it will be of interest to professionals and students in evolutionary biology, invertebrate zoology, developmental biology, and functional morphology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last half-century has shown a dramatic increase in the standard of living of millions of people in Europe, North America and many parts of the Third World. This has, in many ways been brought about by scientific and technical developments which were initiated in the 1940s and 1950s. Promises were then made that nuclear energy would provide electricity so cheap that it would not need metering, pesticides would end malnutrition throughout the world and plastics and other synthetic chemicals would revolutionise our manufacturing industry and our way of life. Whilst some of these promises have been fulfilled, the problems of long-term health risks to humans and wildlife arising from the use, production and disposal of these products were either unknown or deliberately understated. Nuclear power is rendered economically unviable when the real cost of decommissioning and storage of waste for several millenia is included, and the effects on health of both humans and wildlife of early pest eradication programmes with organochlorine pesticides were well documented in Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring". Evidence of the effects of aerosols and refrigerants on depletion of the ozone layer has led to restriction on the use of CFCs, and there is now increasing evidence of climate change resulting from our profligate use of fossil fuels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Strait of Georgia is a one of the world's great inland seas, a 6,900 sq km body of water lying between the British Columbia mainland and Vancouver Island. Rich in history, teeming with wildlife and marine traffic, it is essential to British Columbians for food, jobs, travel and recreation. The sheltered waters of the strait are home to Canada's largest seaport and over two-thirds of the province's population. The Sea Among Us is the first book to present a comprehensive study of the Strait of Georgia in all its aspects with chapters on geology, First Nations, history, oceanography, fish, birds, mammals, invertebrates and plants. Covering everything from tsunami modelling to First Nations history to barnacle reproduction, the book is a sweeping overview of the waterway. It describes how fjords formed, what the seafloor is made of, and why coastal BC is so prone to earthquakes; it advises on which jellyfish sting, how to tell the difference between Dall's and harbour porpoises, and where to find whales; and it addresses how climate change and human impacts could affect the strait, noting that though marine ecosystems are tough and adaptable, there are limits to this resiliency. As editor Dr. Richard Beamish says, "It is the function of this book to inform British Columbians about the Strait of Georgia. All authors hope that the readers will use the information to ask questions about how the Strait of Georgia is coping with change and how they can provide more of the information that is needed to maintain a healthy Strait of Georgia." Informative, descriptive, cautionary and entertaining, The Sea Among Us is illustrated with attractive colour photographs, figures and drawings. It fills a place on the shelf of essential BC reference books beside The Encyclopedia of British Columbia and Marine Life of the Pacific Northwest.
