Book excerpt: "'Player-Piano' tells for the first time the fascinating story of the mechanical piano from earliest times up to the heyday of the instrument in the 1930s. Never before has this story been related, although the end of the player-piano is certainly still within the living memory of most of us and many hundreds of these devices are still to be found in our homes. In addition to telling the story of the development of these pianos which strove to produce perfect music without the need for skills on the part of the 'performer', this book sets out in copious detail exactly how these complex mechanisms work. For the owner of an instrument, step by step instructions for the restoration and preservation of both the early barrel-playing pianos and the most sophisticated player and reproducing instruments are given. To fully illustrate their development, design and mechanical processes, no less than 112 plates and 110 long drawings are included."--Jacket.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Piano Tuning and Allied Arts: Including Principles and Practice of Piano Tuning, Regulation of Piano Action, Repair of the Piano, Elementary Principles of Player-Piano Pneumatics, General Construction of Player Mechanism, and Repair of Player Mechanism The construction of the piano has not in this volume been treated with minuteness of detail, for'this task I have already been able to perform in a former treatise; but in respect of the sound board, the strings, the hammers and the action, the subject-matter has been set forth quite elaborately, and some novel hypotheses have been advanced, based on mature study, research and experience. Here also, however, the theoretical has been justified by the practical, and in no sense have I yielded to the temptation to square facts to theories. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manuelo, the Player Piano That Is All but Human: Care, Regulation, Repair A player piano (or plain piano) should not stand against an outside wall, in a damp room, close to a window, or Where a strong draught of air blows across it. It must not be near stoves, hot air registers, steam pipes, etc. When not in use the case should be kept closed. Nor should a piano be subjected to sudden changes of temperature. If the room in which the instrument stands is cold, it should be warmed very gradually to prevent the moisture that is easily held in warm air from being condensed on the piano strings and other metal parts that require more time to warm up. Rapid heating with a gas stove will cause rusting and will make the hammers and keys sluggish in their action. Sudden changes in temperature will inevitably cause checking of the best of varnish work, because of the unequal expansion of the wood and of the var nish coat. Book excerpt: Decomposition is a bracing, revisionary, and provocative inquiry into music—from Beethoven to Duke Ellington, from Conlon Nancarrow to Evelyn Glennie—as a personal and cultural experience: how it is composed, how it is idiosyncratically perceived by critics and reviewers, and why we listen to it the way we do. Andrew Durkin, best known as the leader of the West Coast–based Industrial Jazz Group, is singular for his insistence on asking tough questions about the complexity of our presumptions about music and about listening, especially in the digital age. In this winning and lucid study he explodes the age-old concept of musical composition as the work of individual genius, arguing instead that in both its composition and reception music is fundamentally a collaborative enterprise that comes into being only through mediation. Drawing on a rich variety of examples—Big Jay McNeely’s “Deacon’s Hop,” Biz Markie’s “Alone Again,” George Antheil’s Ballet Mécanique, Frank Zappa’s “While You Were Art,” and Pauline Oliveros’s “Tuning Meditation,” to name only a few—Durkin makes clear that our appreciation of any piece of music is always informed by neuroscientific, psychological, technological, and cultural factors. How we listen to music, he maintains, might have as much power to change it as music might have to change how we listen.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Piano Tuning and Allied Arts: Including Principles and Practice of Piano Tuning, Regulation of Piano Action, Repair of the Piano, Elementary Principles of Player-Piano Pneumatics, General Construction of Player Mechanism, and Repair of Player Mechanism In writing this book, I have tried to do two things which are always thought to be admirable but seldom thought to be conjunctible. I have tried to set forth the theory of Equal Temperament in a manner at once correct and simple. Simultaneously I have tried to construct and expound a method for the practical application of that theory in practical tuning, equally correct, equally simple and yet thoroughly practical. The construction of the piano has not in this volume been treated with minuteness of detail, for this task I have already been able to perform in a former treatise; but in respect of the soundboard, the strings, the hammers and the action, the subject-matter has been set forth quite elaborately, and some novel hypotheses have been advanced, based on mature study, research and experience. Book excerpt: Regulation and Repair of Piano and Player Mechanism - Together with Tuning as Science and Art is a work authored by expert William Brad White. Player pianos, sometimes referred to as autopianos, were gaining in popularity in the early 1900s, necessitating a book about their servicing. Regulation and Repair of Piano and Player Mechanism is a resource guide for individuals tasked with repairing these large and rather complex instruments. The work focuses specifically on the pneumatic player, which was the standard player piano at the time. The book itself is rather brief and is divided into two sections. The first section deals with the regulation and repair of the piano, focusing on technical aspects the serviceman must be familiar with. Part two details tuning, and is intended not only for the serviceman but also the technically minded owner of a player piano. William Braid White's title is an effective overview of the regulation and repair of a player piano. While player pianos are scarce today, those that are in use certainly require upkeep, and thus this book will remain of interest to individuals tasked with working on these challenging instruments. This work will also appeal to readers interested in music history, as White captures a time when the appeal of automated instruments was perhaps at its greatest peak. Regulation and Repair of Piano and Player Mechanism - Together with Tuning as Science and Art is a detailed guide to servicing a once popular musical instrument. While the prevalence of player pianos has declined greatly since the beginning of the twentieth century, there remains a need for literature on the topic. If the subject matter of this text is of interest to you, White's book is a worthwhile read. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
