Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the common principles of morality and ethics derived from divinely endowed intuitive reason through the creation of al-fitr' a (nature) and human intellect (al-‘aql). Biomedical topics are presented and ethical issues related to topics such as genetic testing, assisted reproduction and organ transplantation are discussed. Whereas these natural sources are God’s special gifts to human beings, God’s revelation as given to the prophets is the supernatural source of divine guidance through which human communities have been guided at all times through history. The second part of the book concentrates on the objectives of Islamic religious practice – the maqa' sid – which include: Preservation of Faith, Preservation of Life, Preservation of Mind (intellect and reason), Preservation of Progeny (al-nasl) and Preservation of Property. Lastly, the third part of the book discusses selected topical issues, including abortion, assisted reproduction devices, genetics, organ transplantation, brain death and end-of-life aspects. For each topic, the current medical evidence is followed by a detailed discussion of the ethical issues involved.

What if I told you pain, and sickness are not a normal consequence of aging? Do you realize you can avoid the factors that contribute to poor health and a shortened life span? Do you believe you can restore health and youthful energy regardless of your age? These are important questions that few of us consider until we are confronted with declining health, chronic pain, or a life-altering diagnosis. You are in control of your health destiny and can create a long, healthy life. Committing to a goal of better health is the first step toward filling the health prosperity bank. As we approach retirement age and finally have time to enjoy life to the fullest, our bodies may have other plans! We want to dive fully into those things that make life enjoyable and bring a smile to our faces; Chasing our grandkids, golfing, traveling, biking, hiking, and gardening, yet in reality we find ourselves slowing down because of fatigue, weakness, poor mobility, or pain. This book challenges you to consider that there is a better way. While many Americans are living longer, we are not always enjoying longer health spans, and our quality of life is declining. Rates of chronic disease continue to rise due to a lack of focus on root causes and prevention of disease. By the time symptoms of disease develop, changes in the body's biology have already been in the making for many years. What if I told you an unhealthy gut, stress and emotional trauma, and inflammation, are the cornerstones of pain and disease? Chronic low-grade inflammation is often the underlying culprit in creating many of the disease states we associate with aging-including heart disease, Alzheimer's, and arthritis as well as cancer and auto-immune disorders. The question we need to answer is 'How do I turn off harmful Inflammation?' Re-directing our attention to what is fueling the internal fire of inflammation must be a top priority. This book is a journey through the health trials and clinical experiences of the author and one that is familiar to many of us. It highlights the factors within our control to profoundly change the trajectory of our health by addressing the mind, body, and spirit. This is a heartfelt exploration that reveals the fundamental reasons why many of us have hit perplexing health potholes as we travel the road of life. Health is not merely the absence of disease. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the end of life makes its inevitable appearance, people should be able to expect reliable, humane, and effective caregiving. Yet too many dying people suffer unnecessarily. While an "overtreated" dying is feared, untreated pain or emotional abandonment are equally frightening. Approaching Death reflects a wide-ranging effort to understand what we know about care at the end of life, what we have yet to learn, and what we know but do not adequately apply. It seeks to build understanding of what constitutes good care for the dying and offers recommendations to decisionmakers that address specific barriers to achieving good care. This volume offers a profile of when, where, and how Americans die. It examines the dimensions of caring at the end of life: Determining diagnosis and prognosis and communicating these to patient and family. Establishing clinical and personal goals. Matching physical, psychological, spiritual, and practical care strategies to the patient's values and circumstances. Approaching Death considers the dying experience in hospitals, nursing homes, and other settings and the role of interdisciplinary teams and managed care. It offers perspectives on quality measurement and improvement, the role of practice guidelines, cost concerns, and legal issues such as assisted suicide. The book proposes how health professionals can become better prepared to care well for those who are dying and to understand that these are not patients for whom "nothing can be done."

Book excerpt: The opioid crisis in the United States has come about because of excessive use of these drugs for both legal and illicit purposes and unprecedented levels of consequent opioid use disorder (OUD). More than 2 million people in the United States are estimated to have OUD, which is caused by prolonged use of prescription opioids, heroin, or other illicit opioids. OUD is a life-threatening condition associated with a 20-fold greater risk of early death due to overdose, infectious diseases, trauma, and suicide. Mortality related to OUD continues to escalate as this public health crisis gathers momentum across the country, with opioid overdoses killing more than 47,000 people in 2017 in the United States. Efforts to date have made no real headway in stemming this crisis, in large part because tools that already existâ€"like evidence-based medicationsâ€"are not being deployed to maximum impact. To support the dissemination of accurate patient-focused information about treatments for addiction, and to help provide scientific solutions to the current opioid crisis, this report studies the evidence base on medication assisted treatment (MAT) for OUD. It examines available evidence on the range of parameters and circumstances in which MAT can be effectively delivered and identifies additional research needed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many advocates of euthanasia consider the criminal law to be an inappropriate medium to adjudicate the profound ethical and humanitarian dilemmas associated with end of life decisions. 'Euthanasia,Death with Dignity and the Law' examines the legal response to euthanasia and end of life decisions and considers whether legal reform is an appropriate response to calls for euthanasia to be more readily available as a mechanism for providing death with dignity. Through an analysis of consent to treatment, living wills and autonomous medical decision making, euthanasia is carefully located within its legal, medical, and social contexts. This book focuses on the impact of euthanasia on the dignity of both the recipient and the practitioner while emphasising the legal, professional, and ethical implications of euthanasia and its significance for the exercise of clinical discretion. It will provide a valuable addition to the euthanasia debate.
