The fire resistance of the structure depends on its ability to resist the combination of the structural gravity loads and the effects of fire without undergoing failure during both heating and cooling. While many studies have been conducted internationally on steel-framed building components in fire, a limited number have focused on composite beams designed according to U.S. codes and standards. This project focused on the thermal and structural behavior of composite beams used in steel building floor systems through both experimental and numerical investigations. These floor systems typically consist of steel beams with a concrete deck cast on top of the beams, where composite action is developed through the use of steel headed shear studs welded to the top flange of the beam. The experimental approach included the use of high-temperature ceramic radiant heaters, vertical loading, and innovative high-temperature instrumentation techniques, including close-range photogrammetry. Isolated concrete slabs representing the concrete portion of the composite floor system were subjected to one-sided heating without the application of load to evaluate the response to a thermal gradient. Large-scale partial composite beams with simple shear beam-to-column connections were then subjected to the combination of heating and loading. There was a reduction in the composite beam load carrying capacity as a result of heating, both at elevated temperatures as well as post-fire ambient conditions. The composite beam was able to sustain service level loads with heating to steel temperatures up to 700°C. Concrete compression failure was an observed failure mode for composite beams with flat slabs at moderate steel temperatures (350-500°C) and overloading. Two modeling techniques were developed and benchmarked using experimental test data: (i) a sequentially-coupled thermal-structural 3D finite element model for evaluating both the thermal and structural response of composite beams and (ii) a 2D fiber-based model for determining the moment-curvature-temperature relationship for a composite beam cross-section. Both approaches account for temperature-dependent material properties and the force-slip behavior of the shear studs. An extensive parametric study was conducted to evaluate the effects of various parameters on the flexural capacity of composite beams at elevated temperatures. Variations in cross-section geometry, concrete deck type and orientation, percentage composite action, and thermal gradient were considered. Current U.S. design provisions for steel-concrete composite beams rely upon a strength-based approach as outlined by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). In partial composite beams, the headed studs transferring interfacial shear between the concrete and steel can undergo significant slip, which is not accounted for directly in design. Results from the parametric study revealed a complex inter-relationship between the beam length, stud slip capacity, and the minimum level of partial composite action that may be permitted for design. A temperature-dependent retention factor was developed for use with the AISC method to predict the flexural capacity at elevated temperatures. Because this retention factor is a function of only the bottom flange temperature, it provides a simple design method to determine the elevated temperature capacity of a composite beam, without having to conduct an extensive thermal and structural analysis." -- Abstract.

Book excerpt: A series of compartment fire experiments was conducted on long-span steel-concrete composite floor beams designed and constructed following U.S. building codes and standards. The test program consisted of five 12.8 m long composite floor beam specimens with various end support conditions. Each specimen was constructed as a partially-composite beam consisting of a W18 35 steel beam and an 83 mm thick lightweight concrete slab cast on top of 76 mm deep ribbed steel decking units. Test variables included two types of simple shear connections (shear-tab and welded/bolted double-angle connections) and the slab continuity over girders. One specimen with the double-angle connections at the ends was tested at ambient temperature and the remaining four specimens were tested under simultaneous mechanical and fire loading. This report, Part 1, presents details of the test setup, specimens, design basis of fire loading, instrumentation, and the behavior of the composite beam with double-angle connections at ambient temperature. The ambient temperature test indicated that the composite beam specimen failed by a shear stud near the west end, followed by concrete breakout failure and yielding of the steel beam. The measured moment capacity was approximately 80% of the calculated flexural strength. The double-angle connection at the west end failed by weld fracture, which caused collapse of the composite beam. The ambient behavior of the composite beam specimen presented herein will serve as a baseline to compare with the composite beam assemblies tested under combined mechanical loads and fire exposure, which are presented in a subsequent report; Part 2 (Choe et al. 2019). The datasets obtained from these tests provide technical information to advance performance-based design of composite floor assemblies in steel-framed buildings subject to fire.

Book excerpt: This dissertation presents the results of experimental and computational investigations on the behavior of steel simple beam end framing connections subjected to fire. While significant progress has been made in understanding the overall structural response of steel buildings subject to fire, the behavior of connections under fire conditions is not well understood. Connections are critical elements for maintaining the integrity of a structure during a fire. Fire can cause large force and deformation demands on connections during both the heating and cooling stages, while reducing connection strength and stiffness. Of particular importance are simple beam end framing connections. These are the most common type of connection found in steel buildings and are used at beam-to-girder and girder-to-column connections in the gravity load resisting system of a building. This dissertation focuses on one particular type of beam end connection: the single plate connection, also known as a shear tab vii connection. This connection is very commonly used in U.S. building construction practice. In this study, material properties of ASTM A992 structural steel at elevated temperatures up to 900°C were investigated by steady state tension coupon tests. Experimental studies on the connection subassemblies at elevated temperatures were conducted to understand and characterize the connection strength and deformation capacities, and to validate predictions of connection capacity developed by computational and design models. In the computational studies, a three-dimensional finite element connection model was developed incorporating contact, geometric and material nonlinearity temperature dependent material properties. The accuracy and limitations of this model were evaluated by comparison with experimental data developed in this research as well as data available in the literature. The computational studies investigated the typical behavior of the connection during heating and cooling phases of fires as well as the connection force and deformation demands. The finite element model was further used to study and understand the effects of several key building design parameters and connection details. Based on the test and analysis results, some important finding and conclusions are drawn, and future work for simple shear connection performance in fire are discussed.
