Book excerpt: The concept of Circular Economy, which is the central theme of this book, is based on the preservation and increase of natural capital by controlling finite stocks and balancing the flow of renewable resources. Both sustainability and Circular Economy concepts go together and share the objective of mitigating the negative externalities mentioned here. The strategies to find the possible answers go through several actions. An economic model that implies changes in the way of thinking and acting in a society requires the training of people and professionals focused on its application. The publication of this book was a way of delivering the results of this work to the society, placing its individuals as agents of social transformation. In this context, the chapters are varied purposefully, so that topics pertinent to Circular Economy can be discussed, but not consolidated in one work alone so far. If we strive for a more resilient economy, a fairer society, and a healthier environment, walking the path is needed. We hope that this reading can elucidate the subject and awaken a critical sense of what attitudes or strategies can get us started. The book aims to reach from readers specialized in the subject, professors, high school students, undergraduate and graduate students, to the curious, beginners in the world of Circular Economy and new business models.

Book excerpt: In a competitive and complex world, where requirements from different fields are ever-growing, organizations need to be responsible for their actions in their respective markets. However, this responsibility must not be deemed one-time-only but instead should be seen as a continuous process, under which organizations ought to effectively use the different resources to allow them to meet the present and future requirements of their stakeholders. Having a significant influence on their collaborators performance, the role developed by managers and engineers is highly relevant to the sustainability of an organizations success. Conscious of this reality, this book contributes to the exchange of experiences and perspectives on the state of research related to sustainable management. Particular focus is given to the role that needs to be developed by managers and engineers, as well as to the future direction of this field of research.

This book was released on 2023-09-28 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research evaluates whether the new model of investment agreement developed by Brazil (CFIA) is a mechanism for enhancing protection and respect for social and economic rights. The research starts by exploring the origins of investment treaties, their development and main characteristics. It examines why investment treaties and socio-economic rights are related, by mapping cases in which investment treaties have already impaired the protection of such rights. The research then analyzes how these two issues shall be jointly handled. It considers international organizations? initiatives to regulate business and human rights and investment treaties? frameworks that foster sustainable development, as well as new investment agreements? models developed by different countries, and then suggests criteria for evaluating whether an investment treaty is adequate from the socio-economic rights standpoint. Finally, this research investigates the CFIA model, brings a brief historical overview, evaluates CFIAs? wording, and examines how some CFIAs? institutional mechanisms consider corporate social responsibility issues. In conclusion, this research asserts that the CFIA model can be a mechanism for enhancing protection and respect for socio-economic rights, but some concerns (particularly related to safeguarding States? regulatory space and providing for stronger obligations to investors and States to protect human rights) need to be addressed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainability is now a widely spread concept, and much progress has been achieved since the 1970s, when it started to be widely discussed. At present, many international organizations and scientists are active in implementing sustainable development as a whole and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in particular. Nevertheless, the main research agenda is being led by some countries, providing a good opportunity for other nations and regions which have not yet been so active, to bring their viewpoints to the global discussion. One of these regions is Latin America. Consistent with the need for more cross-sectorial and cross-cultural interactions among the various stakeholders working in the field of sustainability in Latin America and beyond, this book pursues two main aims: a) to provide research institutions, universities, NGOs, government agencies, and enterprises from the region with an opportunity to present their works in the field of sustainability and b) to document and promote ideas and experiences acquired in the execution of sustainability projects, especially successful initiatives and good practice across the Latin America region. Last but not least, a further aim of the book is to present methodological approaches and experiences deriving from case studies and projects, which aim to show how sustainability may be enhanced in practice.
