Book Synopsis Ancient Chinese Thought, Modern Chinese Power by : Yan Xuetong
Download or read book Ancient Chinese Thought, Modern Chinese Power written by Yan Xuetong and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-08-25 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From China's most influential foreign policy thinker, a vision for a "Beijing Consensus" for international relations The rise of China could be the most important political development of the twenty-first century. What will China look like in the future? What should it look like? And what will China's rise mean for the rest of world? This book, written by China's most influential foreign policy thinker, sets out a vision for the coming decades from China's point of view. In the West, Yan Xuetong is often regarded as a hawkish policy advisor and enemy of liberal internationalists. But a very different picture emerges from this book, as Yan examines the lessons of ancient Chinese political thought for the future of China and the development of a "Beijing consensus" in international relations. Yan, it becomes clear, is neither a communist who believes that economic might is the key to national power, nor a neoconservative who believes that China should rely on military might to get its way. Rather, Yan argues, political leadership is the key to national power, and morality is an essential part of political leadership. Economic and military might are important components of national power, but they are secondary to political leaders who act in accordance with moral norms, and the same holds true in determining the hierarchy of the global order. Providing new insights into the thinking of one of China's leading foreign policy figures, this book will be essential reading for anyone interested in China's rise or in international relations.
Book Synopsis This Chair Rocks by : Ashton Applewhite
Download or read book This Chair Rocks written by Ashton Applewhite and published by Celadon Books. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author, activist, and TED speaker Ashton Applewhite has written a rousing manifesto calling for an end to discrimination and prejudice on the basis of age. In our youth obsessed culture, we’re bombarded by media images and messages about the despairs and declines of our later years. Beauty and pharmaceutical companies work overtime to convince people to purchase products that will retain their youthful appearance and vitality. Wrinkles are embarrassing. Gray hair should be colored and bald heads covered with implants. Older minds and bodies are too frail to keep up with the pace of the modern working world and olders should just step aside for the new generation. Ashton Applewhite once held these beliefs too until she realized where this prejudice comes from and the damage it does. Lively, funny, and deeply researched, This Chair Rocks traces her journey from apprehensive boomer to pro-aging radical, and in the process debunks myth after myth about late life. Explaining the roots of ageism in history and how it divides and debases, Applewhite examines how ageist stereotypes cripple the way our brains and bodies function, looks at ageism in the workplace and the bedroom, exposes the cost of the all-American myth of independence, critiques the portrayal of elders as burdens to society, describes what an all-age-friendly world would look like, and offers a rousing call to action. It’s time to create a world of age equality by making discrimination on the basis of age as unacceptable as any other kind of bias. Whether you’re older or hoping to get there, this book will shake you by the shoulders, cheer you up, make you mad, and change the way you see the rest of your life. Age pride! “Wow. This book totally rocks. It arrived on a day when I was in deep confusion and sadness about my age. Everything about it, from my invisibility to my neck. Within four or five wise, passionate pages, I had found insight, illumination, and inspiration. I never use the word empower, but this book has empowered me.” —Anne Lamott, New York Times bestselling author

Book excerpt: ""Parenthood"" offers a comprehensive exploration of raising children in the modern world, blending insights from child psychology, neuroscience, and sociology. This book delves into three crucial areas: child development stages, effective parenting strategies, and the impact of societal changes on family dynamics. By examining these topics, readers gain a nuanced understanding of the biological, psychological, and social factors influencing child-rearing practices. The book's central thesis argues that successful parenting requires a balanced approach combining instinct, knowledge, and adaptability. It challenges both the notion of parenting as purely intuitive and the idea of a universal formula for raising children. ""Parenthood"" progresses from child development theories to practical strategies, covering topics like discipline, communication, and fostering emotional intelligence. The final section examines how modern challenges, such as technology use and changing family structures, affect parenting practices. What sets this book apart is its emphasis on parenting as a dynamic process that evolves with the child and societal changes. By integrating insights from various disciplines and incorporating real-world experiences, ""Parenthood"" provides a holistic understanding of child-rearing that goes beyond traditional advice. This approach makes it a valuable resource for new parents, professionals working with families, and anyone interested in understanding the complexities of raising children in today's world.

Book Synopsis The brazilian CFIA model as a mechanism for enhancing protection and respect for socio-economic rights by : Marina Martins Martes
Download or read book The brazilian CFIA model as a mechanism for enhancing protection and respect for socio-economic rights written by Marina Martins Martes and published by Editora Dialética. This book was released on 2023-09-28 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research evaluates whether the new model of investment agreement developed by Brazil (CFIA) is a mechanism for enhancing protection and respect for social and economic rights. The research starts by exploring the origins of investment treaties, their development and main characteristics. It examines why investment treaties and socio-economic rights are related, by mapping cases in which investment treaties have already impaired the protection of such rights. The research then analyzes how these two issues shall be jointly handled. It considers international organizations? initiatives to regulate business and human rights and investment treaties? frameworks that foster sustainable development, as well as new investment agreements? models developed by different countries, and then suggests criteria for evaluating whether an investment treaty is adequate from the socio-economic rights standpoint. Finally, this research investigates the CFIA model, brings a brief historical overview, evaluates CFIAs? wording, and examines how some CFIAs? institutional mechanisms consider corporate social responsibility issues. In conclusion, this research asserts that the CFIA model can be a mechanism for enhancing protection and respect for socio-economic rights, but some concerns (particularly related to safeguarding States? regulatory space and providing for stronger obligations to investors and States to protect human rights) need to be addressed.
