Operators and researchers all over the world are challenged to fulfill these requirements by providing enhanced coverage, increased capacity and efficient usage of the scarce spectrum. The introduction of the fourth generation systems (4G), LTE and LTE-A, have set the initiative for a technology evolution that offers new possibilities and is able to satisfy the user requirements and overcome the imposed challenges. However, and despite the improvements brought by the LTE and LTE-A systems, there are certain constraints that still need to be surpassed. LTE for example adopts innovating technologies, such as Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing Access (OFDMA) that improves the spectral efficiency and reduces the Intra-Cell Interference. Nevertheless, Inter-Cell Interference (ICI) remains a constraining factor that can degrade the system capacity and limit the overall performance of the network. On that respect, Inter-Cell Interference Coordination (ICIC) techniques are adopted with target the interference mitigation. One of the limitations of these techniques is that follow static configurations lacking of flexibility and adaptation on network changes. Moreover, LTE-A employs enhanced and new techniques and involves alternative strategies. A promising solution lies on the introduction of Heterogeneous Networks (HetNets), which are networks that include low power small cells under the already existing macro cellular network and exploit several other technologies, such as WiFi. HetNets can further improve the network capacity, enhance the coverage and provide higher speed data transfer. However, due to the heterogeneous nature of the network, traditional methods for the user association, resource allocation and interference mitigation may not always be suitable since their design was based on homogeneous deployments. As such, new and enhanced methods are introduced, such as enhanced ICIC (eICIC), with their accompanied requirements and challenges. Motivated by the abovementioned aspects, this thesis has been focused on the study of ICIC and eICIC schemes, the identification of the related challenges, the enhancement of existing schemes and the proposal of novel solutions. In particular in the initial stages of the work, ICIC techniques have been studied and analyzed. A distributed algorithm that performs dynamic channel allocation has been developed for homogeneous deployments and extended later on to include heterogeneous networks. The solution has been optimized with the use of the Gibbs Sampler, while the setting of algorithm related parameters has been addressed through a detailed analysis. Moreover, a possible implementation of the solution has been presented in detail. The efficiency of the proposed schemes has been demonstrated through simulations and comparisons with benchmark schemes. In the next steps, the work has targeted eICIC techniques with purpose the investigation and analysis of the main constraining issues related to the user association, resource management and interference mitigation. Novel eICIC schemes that aim a better resource management and the overall capacity improvement have been developed and presented in detail, while the performance of the solutions has been shown through simulations and comparisons with reference schemes. Moreover, an optimized eICIC solution has been implemented based on genetic algorithms. Simulation results and comparisons with reference schemes have demonstrated the efficiency of the solution, while the selected configurations are discussed and analyzed.

Smartphone data could be a function of personality, as the smartphone supports interpersonal interaction, and the data collected from the smartphone usage often contains rich customer opinion and behavioral information. A bandwidth allocation method based on smartphone users' personality traits and channel condition is studied in a unified mathematical framework in this dissertation. Personalizing bandwidth allocation could be done by analyzing smartphone users' personality traits, resulting in business intelligence, a smarter and more efficient usage of the limited bandwidth, while taking channel fading conditions into account. Using the diagnostic inference, the service provider could calculate user's probability of having each personality trait stand on its data usage. One step further, its bandwidth usage of the following period can be predicted using predictive inference. For our proposed bandwidth allocation scheme, both the outage capacity and outage probability are studied in fading channel. Therefore, service providers shall better allocate the limited bandwidth, provide more personal service to each user, and adjust the bandwidth allocation further on account of the real channel condition. How much information can be transported, i.e., the transmission rate, is another subject of great interest in hybrid wireless networks. The main focus of this paper is the effect of channel fading in hybrid wireless network, in which a wired network of base stations is deployed to support long-range communications between wireless nodes. Two types of transmission mode in hybrid wireless network, i.e., intra-cell mode and infrastructure mode, are considered. To effectively overcome fading impairment, optimal multiple access technique is applied, allowing opportunistic sources to transmit concurrently with the scheduled source. Those different sources, much like in wideband CDMA system, share the entire bandwidth. A successive interference cancellation (SIC) strategy is then introduced at receiver side to limit the intra-cell interference and achieve the maximum capacity. Meanwhile, frequency reuse scheme is employed to minimize the inter-cell interference. Since the outage capacity over different fading channels will exhibit different asymptotic behaviors, in this dissertation we examine the Rayleigh, Rician and Nakagami-m models, which are the most commonly used fading models. Close-form solutions for outage throughput capacity at high signal-to-noise-plus-interference ratio (SNIR) are derived. It is showed that, with opportunistic sources, the intra-cell mode effectively combats fading as wireless nodes increases; however, the infrastructure mode is bottlenecked by the downlink transmission since base station is the only transmitter in the cell during the down link phase. The theoretical bounds obtained and proofs are instrumental to the future network modeling and design. Array signal processing plays an important role in many areas. Besides the Uniform Linear Array, their are many sparse array that have been proposed, for example, Minimum re dundancy array, Co-prime array, nested array, etc. However, most of the array structures have certain disadvantages. A new type of non-linear sparse sensor array called sparse convolutional array is illustrated which can reduce the number of physical sensors while remain a decent performance in DOA estimation. The sparse convolutional array contains three groups of physical sensors and is able to form a hole-free difference co-array. By adding sensors on two sides instead of the center, the proposed array shows improved performance compares to some other approaches while reminds few physical sensors. The array geometrical structure is illustrated and the numerical result is provided. We also extended this array structure to two dimension case and the performance is illustrated. Automatic modulation classification (AMC) is a fundamental process in wireless communication. In our work, we proposed a Convolutional neural network based Automatic Modulation Classification (AMC) over Rician Fading Channel. We constructed a system to simulate the received modulated samples through Rician fading channel. 6 commonly used modulation methods are considered, including BPSK, QPSK, 8-PSK, 4-PAM, 16-QAM and 64-QAM. The scheme of proposed convolutional neural network classifier is illustrated, and the neural network is trained with the generated samples and the classification accuracy is demonstrated. The classification accuracy of different mod methods are shown, respectively. And accuracies among different K-factor and maximum Doppler are investigated. Finally, we demonstrated the bit error rate of the system assume a successive modulation detection.

The data rate achievable now with most practical systems is in the range of tens of megabits per second. As discussed by Shannon, the channel capacity limit is not dependent on the transmitter/ receiver technologies but on the properties of the communication channel. The SIR in the presence of multipath fading, shadowing and path loss is a very important parameter for studying the capacity of a wireless system. This thesis presents a statistical analysis of the SIR for next generation wireless networks. First a new analytical formula for the PDF of the signal to interference ratio for a single interferer is presented. Monte Carlo simulation is used to validate the analytical formula. However in a realistic environment there are often more than one active interferers in a given cell. Two distinct approaches are used to study the effect of multiple interferers on the statistics of the SIR. The sum of random vector approach is used to find the PDF of the SIR for the multiple interference scenario. Laguerre polynomial approximations are used to simplify the problem of finding the PDF of the SIR. A new algorithm is proposed to find the optimum free parameter for the Laguerre approximation. However even with the optimum free parameter, the computational burden required to approximate the PDF of the SIR for multiple interferers with a Laguerre polynomial was impractical. Therefore an alternative characteristics function approach was proposed in this thesis. In this approach the path loss, shadowing and multipath fading are assumed to be dependent random variables. The statistical analysis of the SIR is used to study the TDD inter-cell interference in a self-organizing user deployed femtocell systems.

Our goal is to design and evaluate algorithms and procedures to provide a balanced load and to improve the energy-efficiency of these networks, while satisfying the quality-of-service constraints of the users. The contributions of this dissertation are (i) a new handover policy to balance the load in Long Term Evolution (LTE) Heterogeneous Networks (HetNets), (ii) an analytical characterization of the efficiency and fairness trade-off of LTE uplink schedulers, and (iii) energy-efficient resource allocation algorithms for LTE HetNets with quality-of-service constraints (QoS).First, we address the load balancing problem in HetNets deployments. We focus on the cell selection and handover policies as more base stations with different properties and functionalities are deployed. Conventional methods such as the strongest cell approach, used in single-layer network architectures, do not offer balanced loading or optimal performance for the HetNets due to the transmit power differences, backhaul, and access constraints of different base station types. Therefore, we propose a new handover decision policy that employs cell breathing, which dynamically adjusts the cell coverage regions based on the uplink interference measurements and current system load. The proposed policy also contributes to the self-adaptive and self-organization goals of the next-generation cellular systems.Next, we investigate the uplink resource scheduling problem in single carrier frequency-domain multiple access systems. We present an efficient implementation method that translates these scheduling problems into set partitioning problems. Then, we discuss a family of utility functions that enable us to investigate the performance of different frequency domain schedulers such as the sum-rate maximization, proportional fair, and max-min fair schedulers. We use the price of fairness as a metric to analytically quantify the efficiency and fairness trade-offs in the schedulers and provide several upper bounds. We believe that this type of analysis can provide guidelines for the network operators to control the efficiency and fairness trade-off as the data traffic grows.Finally, we investigate the multi-cell multi-carrier network energy efficiency problem where we propose utility-based energy-efficient resource allocation algorithms. We consider a linearized load-adaptive power consumption model at the base stations. We study the interference pricing mechanisms which include the inter-cell interference contributions and penalize the transmissions based on the interference they create. We propose two types of power control algorithms. First, we propose an iterative multi-level water-filling algorithm for multi-cell wireless networks. Second, we employ the gradient ascent method to control the transmit power of base stations. Both of these frameworks are extended to include QoS constraints such as the minimum rate constraints for each user. We present the optimality conditions and convergence of both algorithms, along with their performance evaluations.

Book excerpt: In order to improve the capacity and spectrum efficiency of next generation wireless networks, multi-tier wireless networking and device-to-device (D2D) communication are widely considered as strong candidates for 5G. In this thesis, I have developed new theories and design guidelines to improve the performance of large-scale multi-tier and D2D networks by studying their resource optimization and interference management. In the first part of this thesis, we study optimal power allocation for distributed relays in a multi-channel system with multiple source-destination pairs and an individual power budget for each relay. We focus on designing the optimal relay beamformers, aiming at minimizing per-relay power usage while meeting minimum signal-to-noise guarantees. Showing that strong Lagrange duality holds even for this non-convex problem, we solve it in the dual domain. Further, we investigate the effect of imperfect channel information by quantifying the performance loss due to either quantization error with limited feedback or channel estimation error. In the second part of this thesis, we study optimal inter-cell interference control for distributed relays in a multi-channel system. We design optimal relay beamforming to minimize the maximum interference caused at the neighboring cells, while satisfying minimum signal-to-noise requirements and per-relay power constraints. Even though the problem is non-convex, we propose an iterative algorithm that provides a semi-closed-form solution. We extend this algorithm to the problem of maximizing the minimum signal-to-noise subject to some pre-determined maximum interference constraints at neighboring cells. In order to gain insight into designing this system in practice, we further study the received worst-case signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio versus the maximum interference target. In the third part of this thesis, we consider D2D communication underlaid in a cellular system for uplink resource sharing. Under optimal cellular user (CU) receive beamforming, we jointly optimize the powers of CUs and D2D pairs for their sum rate maximization, while satisfying minimum quality-of-service (QoS) requirements and worst-case inter-cell interference limit in multiple neighboring cells. The formulated joint optimization problem is non-convex. We propose an approximate power control algorithm to maximize the sum rate and provide an upper bound on the performance loss by the proposed algorithm and conditions for its optimality. We further extended the results of the third part in the fourth part of this thesis, where we jointly optimize the beam vector and the transmit powers of the CU and D2D transmitter under practical system settings. We consider a multi-cell scenario, where perfect channel information is available only for the direct channels from the CU and D2D to the base station. For other channels, only partial channel information is available. The uncertain channel information, the non-convex expected sum rate, and the various power, interference, and QoS constraints, lead to a challenging optimization problem. We propose an efficient robust power control algorithm based on a ratio-of-expectation approximation to maximize the expected sum rate, which is shown to give near-optimal performance by comparing it with an upper bound of the sum rate.
