Der Tod der Eltern ist eine dramatische und erschütternde Erfahrung im Erwachsenenalter. Sind Kinder von diesem Verlust betroffen, stellt dies für sie eine große Herausforderung dar, die physisch und psychisch spürbar ist und zu bewältigen gilt. Während man sich im Erwachsenenalter bereits weitgehend von den Eltern gelöst und zu einer eigenständigen Persönlichkeit entwickelt hat, die mit der damit verbundenen Trauer angemessen umgehen kann, bedeutet der Tod der Eltern in der Kindheit in den meisten Fällen eine traumatische Erfahrung. Die meisten Autoren gehen davon aus, dass Kinder durch den Verlust ihrer primären elterlichen Bezugspersonen, die für die meisten Kinder Schutz und Sicherheit bedeuten, in ihrer psychischen, geistigen und sozialen Entwicklung schwer geschädigt werden können. Eine solche traumatische Erfahrung stellt eine potenzielle Gefahr für die weitere Entwicklung in der Kindheit dar. Es scheint, dass derartige Risikoperspektiven automatisch mit negativen Konsequenzen für die kindliche Entwicklung verbunden sind. Dieser negative Aspekt tritt in den Vordergrund. Es gibt jedoch Kinder, die trotz dieses Risikos zu erstaunlich robusten, kompetenten und leistungsfähigen Persönlichkeiten heranwachsen. Solche Kinder werden als "resilient" bezeichnet. Unter "Resilienz" versteht man die menschliche Widerstandsfähigkeit gegenüber belastenden Lebensumständen. Der Gegenbegriff zur "Resilienz" ist der Begriff der "Vulnerabilität", das bedeutet Verletzlichkeit und Verwundbarkeit. Aus diesem Grund wird Resilienz auch als psychische Robustheit, Widerstandsfähigkeit oder Unverwundbarkeit bezeichnet. Resilienz ist keine angeborene Eigenschaft. Jeder Mensch reagiert auf problematische Lebensumstände, Risiken und Krisen unterschiedlich. Während manche Menschen extrem anfällig für psychische Beeinträchtigungen oder sogar Krankheiten sind, fällt es anderen leicht, diese zu überwinden.
