Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ductless split system air conditioners and heat pumps exist primarily in Europe and Asia. In North America, ductless air conditioners and heat pumps were a small niche market until the early 2000s, but have been gaining in market share since that time. This study assessed international DHP markets to determine how international experience can enhance market uptake of this technology in the Northwestern United States"--Publisher's description (viewed June 9, 2015).

Book excerpt: "In an effort to transform the residential space heating market in the Northwest, the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA) has focused on promoting inverter-driven ductless heat pumps (DHPs) as a promising technology for displacing electric resistance heat. The market for this technology is evolving rapidly. The key objectives of this study are to identify relevant market segments in the Northwest, and quantify the maximum technical potential for displacing electric resistance heating in each segment. This study also identifies current market barriers and likely market adoption issues for standard DHPs as well as other related specialized equipment in the Northwest. It forecasts the likely total displacement of electric resistance heating by standard and specialized DHPs over the next 20 years under different market adoption scenarios"--Publisher's description (viewed June 9, 2015).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The method of studying the performance of the solar-assisted heat pump using the FCHART 4.0 computer program is described. The solar-assisted heat pump's performance was compared to that of an air-to-air heat pump and found to be inferior. The lifetime energy requirement is expected to be greater, as is its life-cycle cost. Moreover, conventional heat pumps are available now and are more easily suited to retrofit applications. It is recommended that the solar-assisted heat pump program be terminated in favor of more identifiable significant residential energy programs. (LEW).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, air-source heat pumps (ASHPs) have been used more often in warmer climates; however, some new ASHPs are gaining ground in colder areas. These systems operate at subzero (Fahrenheit) temperatures and many do not include backup electric resistance elements. There are still uncertainties, however, about capacity and efficiency in cold weather. Also, questions such as "how cold is too cold?" do not have clear answers. These uncertainties could lead to skepticism among homeowners; poor energy savings estimates; suboptimal system selection by heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning contractors; and inconsistent energy modeling. In an effort to better understand and characterize the heating performance of these units in cold climates, the U.S. Department of Energy Building America team, Consortium for Advanced Residential Buildings (CARB), monitored seven inverter-driven, ductless ASHPs across the Northeast. Operating data were collected for three Mitsubishi FE18 units, three Mitsubishi FE12 units, and one Fujitsu 15RLS2 unit. The intent of this research was to assess heat output, electricity consumption, and coefficients of performance (COPs) at various temperatures and load conditions. This assessment was accomplished with long- and short-term tests that measured power consumption; supply, return, and outdoor air temperatures; and airflow through the indoor fan coil.

Book excerpt: The combination of heat pumps and solar components is a recent development and has great potential for improving the energy efficiency of house and hot water heating systems. As a consequence, it can enhance the energy footprint of a building substantially. This work compares different systems, analyses their performance and illustrates monitoring techniques. It helps the reader to design, simulate and assess solar and heat pump systems. Good examples of built systems are discussed in detail and advice is given on how to design the most efficient system. This book is the first one about this combination of components and presents the state of the art of this technology. It is based on a joint research project of two programmes of the International Energy Agency: the Solar Heating and Cooling Programme (SHC) and the Heat Pump Programme. More than 50 experts from 13 countries have participated in this research.
