Book excerpt: This study aims to contribute to this growing area of research by challenging some of the assumptions grounded in scholarship dealing with the processes of civil repair and democratic reconstruction in post-communist Poland, which so often presents the country as consistently united behind the liberal-democratic goals of the revolution of 1989. This is an obvious cliché, yet the scholarship on Poland often mirrors the 'end of history' narrative, and this is why the problem of value-commitments of the post-communist polity needs revision. Consequently, I propose to investigate how political community has been deliberated after the fall of communism in Poland. It is important to address the question, whether a baseline agreement on what kind of ideals and goals the political community should embody exists to begin with. Such agreement cannot be taken for granted. Hence, my aim in this thesis is to understand how and which ideas and notions of political community clashed in post-communism. To this end, I have selected three case studies of crucial public debates in post-communist Poland, which not only caused controversy but also challenged some pre-existing assumptions about community and politics, thus allowing for a re-evaluation of political commitments and notions concerning the kind of political community Poles want to attain. This analysis will allow shedding new light on the rise of what is currently defined as 'illiberal democracy' in East and Central Europe.
