Book excerpt: This thesis presents an integrated study of mature carbonate oil reservoirs (Upper Jurassic Smackover Formation) undergoing gas injection in the Little Cedar Creek Field located in Conecuh County, Alabama. This field produces from two reservoirs, one grainstone-packstone and the other microbial boundstone. The main objective of the study is to determine a potential redevelopment plan to increase oil recovery from the field by targeting the remaining oil saturation. This study involves using numerical reservoir simulation to identify the remaining recoverable oil distribution throughout the field. The 3-D geological model, which served as input for the dynamic reservoir simulation performed in this study, was provided by another author. Reservoir simulation indicates that potentially high recoverable oil saturation remains in the unitized area in the southwestern part of the field. Also, the simulation studies show that the following redevelopment plan investigated in this study has the potential to recover up to 5 MMSTB of oil by January 2017: converting 3 wells to inject water into the microbial boundstone reservoir, converting one more well to inject recycled gas into the grainstone-packstone reservoir performing work-over operations on 18 wells, sidetracking a plugged and abandoned well 10560, already completed in the grainstone-packstone reservoir, to another location in the same reservoir, and drilling 7 new wells in the grainstone-packstone reservoir and 5 new wells in the microbial boundstone reservoir. All these 12 new wells should be drilled on 160-acre unit size according to the field rules. Moreover, reservoir simulation showed that drilling additional 6 wells on a unit size less than160-acre (infill drilling) could result in additional recovery of up to 0.7 MMSTB of oil from the grainstone-packstone reservoir. No cost-benefit analysis studies have been performed in this thesis. Thus, the redevelopment plan investigated cannot be recommended for implementation until such analyses have been conducted. Book excerpt: This field case study focuses on Upper Jurassic (Oxfordian) Smackover hydrocarbon reservoir characterization, modeling and evaluation at Fishpond Field, Escambia County, Alabama, eastern Gulf Coastal Plain of North America. The field is located in the Conecuh Embayment area, south of the Little Cedar Creek Field in Conecuh County and east of Appleton Field in Escambia County. In the Conecuh Embayment, Smackover microbial buildups commonly developed on Paleozoic basement paleohighs in an inner to middle carbonate ramp setting. The microbial and associated facies identified in Fishpond Field are: (F-1) peloidal wackestone, (F-2) peloidal packstone, (F-3) peloidal grainstone, (F-4) peloidal grainstone/packstone, (F-5) microbially-influenced wackestone, (F-6) microbially-influenced packstone, (F-7) microbial boundstone, (F-8) oolitic grainstone, (F-9) shale, and (F-10) dolomitized wackestone/packstone. The Smackover section consists of an alternation of carbonate facies, including F-1 through F-8. The repetitive vertical trend in facies indicates variations in depositional conditions in the area as a result of changes in water depth, energy conditions, salinity, and/or water chemistry due to temporal variations or changes in relative sea level. Accommodation for sediment accumulation also was produced by a change in base level due to differential movement of basement rocks as a result of faulting and/or subsidence due to burial compaction and extension. These changes in base level contributed to the development of a microbial buildup that ranges between 130-165 ft in thickness. The Fishpond Field carbonate reservoir includes a lower microbial buildup interval, a middle grainstone/packstone interval and an upper microbial buildup interval. The Fishpond Field has sedimentary and petroleum system characteristics similar to the neighboring Appleton and Little Cedar Creek Fields, but also has distinct differences from these Smackover fields. The characteristics of the petroleum trap and reservoir at Fishpond Field requires modification of the exploration strategy presently in use to identify Smackover reservoirs productive of hydrocarbons in the Conecuh Embayment area. The complexity of the geologic history of the petroleum trap and reservoir development at Fishpond Field distinguishes this field from the Appleton basement paleohigh and related microbial buildup and the Little Cedar Creek stratigraphic trap and associated inner ramp microbial buildups.

Book excerpt: Little Cedar Creek field is a mature oil field located in southeastern Conecuh County, Alabama, in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. As of May 2012, 12.5 MMBLS of oil and 14.8 MMCF of natural gas have been produced from the field area. The main reservoirs are microbial carbonate facies and associated nearshore high energy shoal facies of the Upper Jurassic Smackover Formation that overlie conglomerate and sandstone facies of the Norphlet Formation and underlie the argillaceous, anhydritic-carbonaceous facies of the Haynesville Formation. These carbonate reservoirs are composed of vuggy boundstone and moldic grainstone, and the petroleum trap is stratigraphic being controlled primarily by changes in depositional facies. To maximize recovery and investment in the field, an integrated geoscientific-engineering reservoir-wide development plan is needed, including reservoir characterization, modeling, and simulation. This research presents a workflow for geological characterization, formation evaluation, and 3D geologic modeling for fields producing from microbial carbonates and associated reservoirs. The workflow is used to develop a 3D geologic model for the carbonate reservoirs. Step I involves core description and thin section analysis to divide and characterize the different Smackover facies in the field area into 7 units. The main reservoir facies are the microbial boundstone characterized by vuggy porosity and nearshore/shoal grainstone characterized by moldic porosity. Step II is well log correlation and formation evaluation of 113 wells. We use wireline logs and conventional core data analysis data to calculate average porosity values, permeability and water saturations. Neural networks are utilized at this stage to derive permeability where core measurements are absent or partially present across the reservoirs. Step III is building the 3D structural and stratigraphic framework that is populated with the petrophysical parameters calculated in the previous step. Overall, the integration of reservoir characterization, formation evaluation, and 3D geologic modeling provides a sound framework in the establishment of a field/reservoir-wide development plan for optimal primary and enhanced recovery for these Upper Jurassic microbial carbonate and associated reservoirs. Such a reservoir-wide development plan has broad application to other fields producing from microbial carbonate reservoirs.

For the past 30 years, extensive effort has been applied to describing these microbial fabrics because of their influence on reservoir quality variability. The Smackover Formation at Little Cedar Creek Field in Conecuh County displays microbial lithofacies and reservoirs in a largely undolomitized state. These strata are an ideal dataset to characterize original microbial textures, providing more pristine information to interpret depositional environments and determine the extent that original depositional fabric controlled final reservoir quality. Various classifications of microbial fabrics have also provided models for interpreting depositional history and stratigraphic position of these buildups. This study recognizes five lithofacies in the Smackover Formation: a lower laminated mudstone, a peloidal packstone, a microbial bindstone, a laminated mudstone, and an ooid grainstone. Of the previously published models, Heydari and Baria (2005) provide the best characterization of the units found in Little Cedar Creek. This study enhances the Heydari and Baria (2005) and Mancini et. al. (2008) models by integrating new wells and data gathered in the decade since the model was proposed.

Phase I of the project has been completed. The principal objectives of the project are: increasing the productivity and profitability of the Womack Hill Field Unit, thereby extending the economic life of this Class II Reservoir and transferring effectively and in a timely manner the knowledge gained and technology developed from this project to producers who are operating other domestic fields with Class II Reservoirs. The major tasks of the project included reservoir characterization, recovery technology analysis, recovery technology evaluation, and the decision to implement a demonstration project. Reservoir characterization consisted of geoscientific reservoir characterization, petrophysical and engineering property characterization, microbial characterization, and integration of the characterization data. Recovery technology analysis included 3-D geologic modeling, reservoir simulation, and microbial core experiments. Recovery technology evaluation consisted of acquiring and evaluating new high quality 2-D seismic data, evaluating the existing pressure maintenance project in the Womack Hill Field Unit, and evaluating the concept of an immobilized enzyme technology project for the Womack Hill Field Unit. The decision to implement a demonstration project essentially resulted in the decision on whether to conduct an infill drilling project in Womack Hill Field. Reservoir performance, multiwell productivity analysis, and reservoir simulation studies indicate that water injection continues to provide stable support to maintain production from wells in the western unitized area of the field and that the strong water drive present in the eastern area of the field is adequate to sustain production from this part of the field. Although the results from the microbial characterization and microbial core experiments are very promising, it is recommended that an immobilized enzyme technology project not be implemented in the Womack Hill Field Unit until live (freshly taken and properly preserved) cores from the Smackover reservoir in the field are acquired to confirm the microbial core experiments to date. From 3-D geologic modeling, reservoir performance analysis, and reservoir simulation, four areas in the Womack Hill Field were identified as prospective infill drilling sites to recover undrained oil from the field. It was determined that the two areas in the unit area probably can be effectively drained by perforating higher zones in the Smackover reservoir in currently producing wells. The two areas in the eastern (non-unitized) part of the field require the drilling of new wells. The successful drilling and testing of a well in 2003 by J.R. Pounds, Inc. has proven the oil potential of the easternmost site in the non-unitized part of the field. Pruet Production Co. acquired new 2-D seismic data to evaluate the oil potential of the westernmost site. Because of the effects of a fault shadow from the major fault bounding the southern border of the Womack Hill Field, it is difficult to evaluate conclusively this potential drill site. Pruet Production Co. has decided not to drill this new well at this time and to further evaluate the new 2-D seismic profiles after these data have been processed using a pre-stack migration technique. Pruet Production Co. has elected not to continue into Phase II of this project because they are not prepared to make a proposal to the other mineral interest owners regarding the drilling of new wells as part of an infill drilling program at this time. Pruet is integrating the reservoir characterization, 3-D geologic modeling, reservoir performance analysis, and reservoir simulation results of the project into their field-scale reservoir management strategy for the Womack Hill Field to improve field operations.

The project effort includes the prediction of fluid flow in carbonate reservoirs through reservoir simulation modeling that utilizes geologic reservoir characterization and modeling and the prediction of carbonate reservoir architecture, heterogeneity and quality through seismic imaging. The primary objective of the project is to increase the profitability, producibility and efficiency of recovery of oil from existing and undiscovered Upper Jurassic fields characterized by reef and carbonate shoals associated with pre-Mesozoic basement paleohighs. The principal research effort for Year 3 of the project has been reservoir characterization, 3-D modeling, testing of the geologic-engineering model, and technology transfer. This effort has included six tasks: (1) the study of seismic attributes, (2) petrophysical characterization, (3) data integration, (4) the building of the geologic-engineering model, (5) the testing of the geologic-engineering model and (6) technology transfer. This work was scheduled for completion in Year 3. Progress on the project is as follows: geoscientific reservoir characterization is completed. The architecture, porosity types and heterogeneity of the reef and shoal reservoirs at Appleton and Vocation Fields have been characterized using geological and geophysical data. The study of rock-fluid interactions has been completed. Observations regarding the diagenetic processes influencing pore system development and heterogeneity in these reef and shoal reservoirs have been made. Petrophysical and engineering property characterization has been completed. Porosity and permeability data at Appleton and Vocation Fields have been analyzed, and well performance analysis has been conducted. Data integration is up to date, in that, the geological, geophysical, petrophysical and engineering data collected to date for Appleton and Vocation Fields have been compiled into a fieldwide digital database. 3-D geologic modeling of the structures and reservoirs at Appleton and Vocation Fields has been completed. The models represent an integration of geological, petrophysical and seismic data. 3-D reservoir simulation of the reservoirs at Appleton and Vocation Fields has been completed. The 3-D geologic models served as the framework for the simulations. The geologic-engineering models of the Appleton and Vocation Field reservoirs have been developed. These models are being tested. The geophysical interpretation for the paleotopographic feature being tested has been made, and the study of the data resulting from drilling of a well on this paleohigh is in progress. Numerous presentations on reservoir characterization and modeling at Appleton and Vocation Fields have been made at professional meetings and conferences and a short course on microbial reservoir characterization and modeling based on these fields has been prepared.

The information on the source rocks is being prepared for inclusion in the final report. Task 3 - Petroleum Reservoirs - Work on the characterization of Smackover petroleum reservoirs continues. The cores to be described have been identified and many of the cores for the eastern and western parts of the basin have been described. Task 4 - Reservoir Diagenesis - Work on reservoir diagenesis continues. Samples from the cores selected for the reservoir characterization are being used for this task. Task 5 - Underdeveloped Reservoirs - Two underdeveloped Smackover reservoirs have been identified. They are the microbial reef and shoal reservoirs. Work Planned (Year 5): Task 1 - Basin Flow - This task has been completed and the topical report has been submitted to the U.S. DOE. Task 2 - Petroleum Source Rocks - Petroleum source rock information will continue to be prepared for the final report. Task 3 - Petroleum Reservoirs - Characterization of petroleum reservoirs will continue through core studies. Task 4 - Reservoir Diagenesis - Characterization of reservoir diagenesis will continue through petrographic analysis.
