Book Synopsis The Water Resource Implications of Changing Climate in the Volta River Basin by : Matthew McCartney
Download or read book The Water Resource Implications of Changing Climate in the Volta River Basin written by Matthew McCartney and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2012 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Volta River is one of the major rivers in Africa. In this study, a dynamic regional climate model (CCLM), a hydrological model (SWAT) and a water resource model (WEAP) were used to provide an assessment of one downscaled ‘middle impact’ climate change scenario on the performance of existing and planned irrigation and hydropower schemes. The results indicate that, by the middle of the twenty-first century, altered climate is likely to undermine the technical performance of existing and planned reservoirs, which will, in turn, affect development outcomes. Future water resources development in the basin requires interventions that bolster resilience and water security. Much more systematic planning of water storage, greater cooperation between the riparian states and consideration of innovative approaches to water storage are needed.
Book Synopsis Hydrology and Water Resources of Africa by : M. Shahin
Download or read book Hydrology and Water Resources of Africa written by M. Shahin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa, the cradle of many old civilizations, is the second largest world continent, and the homeland of nearly one-eighth of the world population. Despite Africa’s richness in natural resources, the average income per person, after excluding a few countries, is the lowest all over the world, and the percentage of inhabitants infected with contagious diseases is the highest. Development of Africa to help accommodate the ever-increasing population and secure a reasonable living standard to all inhabitants, though an enormous challenge is extremely necessary. Water is the artery of life, without it all living creatures on earth cannot survive. As such, a thorough knowledge of the meteorological and hydrological processes influencing the yield and quality of the water resources, surface and subsurface, and their distribution and variability in time and space is unavoidable for the overall development of any part of the world. It is highly probable that the said knowledge is at present a top priority to Africa, a continent that has been for so long-and probably still-devastated by the endless ambitions of colonial powers not to forget the corruption and destruction practiced by the internal powers, at least in some countries. The present book “Hydrology and Water Resources of Africa” is written with the aim of bringing together in one volume a fair amount of knowledge any professional involved in hydrology and water resources of Africa needs to know.
Book Synopsis Shared Water Resources in West Africa by : Nwamaka Chigozie Odili
Download or read book Shared Water Resources in West Africa written by Nwamaka Chigozie Odili and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work, Shared Water Resources in West Africa: Relevance and Application of the UN Watercourses and UNECE Water Conventions, addresses the question of whether riparian states in West Africa need to be parties to both the UN Watercourses Convention and the UNECE Water Convention, both of which have influenced current water regimes in the region. The initial transboundary water instruments in the region dealt primarily with navigation, later agreements addressed the need for cooperation, while recent regimes incorporate other principles of international water law articulated in the UN water treaties Although only six out of its numerous shared watercourses are currently regulated by legal instruments, West Africa contributed through these agreements to the development of international water prior to the adoption of the UN Watercourses and the UNECE Water Conventions in the 1990s.

Book Synopsis Climate Change and Water Resources in Africa by : Salif Diop
Download or read book Climate Change and Water Resources in Africa written by Salif Diop and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-15 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this book is on the key water-related vulnerabilities to climate change in Africa, particularly in its most vulnerable areas, exploring potential management responses to such vulnerabilities. The African countries are particularly exposed and vulnerable to the negative impacts of climate change, with important impacts on water resources and hydrological systems, water availability, water resource management and sea level variations. Already, under various anthropogenic pressures, the status of water resources in Africa has been changing over the past decades, with decreasing water quality, falling groundwater levels, and variability in rainfall, both in terms of timing and intensity. Climate change will further accelerate the rate of change, affecting the ability of people and societies to respond in a timely manner. It is clear that there is no quick fix to the pressures imposed on water resources by climate change. Increasing the resilience of ecosystems and communities to extreme events such as flooding and drought, and integrating climate change risks and opportunities into development decision-making is indeed a key challenge, as much a technical climate-change one, as a political and developmental challenge. The book, in this regard, intends to contribute to the debate around climate change in relation to water resources management in Africa, and in particular inform policy decisions and actions that will improve governments’ and communities’ ability to manage the challenges of climate change and variability in relation to the aquatic ecosystems that they depend on. The knowledge collected in this book will benefit policy makers, researchers, as well as other stakeholders.

Download or read book The Volta River Basin written by Timothy O. Williams and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Volta River Basin (VRB) is an important transboundary basin in West Africa that covers approximately 410,000 square kilometres across six countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Mali and Togo. Its natural resources sustain the livelihoods of its population and contribute to economic development. This book provides a comprehensive, interdisciplinary review and assessment of the issues and challenges faced. The authors provide a science-based assessment of current and future scenarios of water availability, the demands of key sectors, including agriculture and hydropower, and the environment under changing demographic, economic, social and climatic conditions. They also identify solutions and strategies that will allow available water resources to be sustainably used to improve agricultural productivity, food security and economic growth in the VRB. Overall, the work examines from a multidisciplinary and multi-stakeholder perspective the solutions and strategies to improve the use of water and other natural resources in the VRB to achieve enhanced food security, livelihoods and economic growth.

Book Synopsis Hydropolitical Vulnerability and Resilience Along International Waters by :
Download or read book Hydropolitical Vulnerability and Resilience Along International Waters written by and published by UNEP/Earthprint. This book was released on 2005 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Africa, most major rivers, freshwater lakes, and aquifers are shared by two or more countries. These nations are becoming increasingly vulnerable to conflict, and their vulnerabilities are made more acute by climatic variations in precipitation, increasing urbanization, industrialization and environmental degradation. The concept of resilience and vulnerability as it relates to water resources is tackled in this report within the framework of sustainability and relates to the ability of the human and bio-physical systems to adapt to change.

Book excerpt: Of all the many challenges facing the inhabitants of the African continent, there is one elemental need regularlyoverlooked by the industrialized world. Award-winning photographer Gil Garcetti has created an important visual document intended to show the world why Water is Key. The book contains eighty compelling black-and-white photographs that illustrate the immediate need for safe water and the dramatic results that can be achieved through the help of world leaders, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and involved citizens. Short essays by leaders such as President Jimmy Carter and outgoing United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan are accompanied by quotes from NGO staff and West African villagers themselves. A foreword by Steve Hilton, president of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, describes the foundation's important safewater relief efforts in Niger, Ghana, Mali, and Burkina Faso. A directory of NGOs and safe water projects in West Africa is included. Gil Garcetti intends Water is Key to be a call to action and plans to spend a substantial part of his energies in the next two years to making his campaign a successful one. All of his royalties from bookstore sales of this book will be donated to a safe-water NGO.
