Download or read book The Central Nervous System of Vertebrates written by Rudolf Nieuwenhuys and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998 with total page 2270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive reference is clearly destined to become the definitive anatomical basis for all molecular neuroscience research. The three volumes provide a complete overview and comparison of the structural organisation of all vertebrate groups, ranging from amphioxus and lamprey through fishes, amphibians and birds to mammals. This thus allows a systematic treatment of the concepts and methodology found in modern comparative neuroscience. Neuroscientists, comparative morphologists and anatomists will all benefit from: * 1,200 detailed and standardised neuroanatomical drawings * the illustrations were painstakingly hand-drawn by a team of graphic designers, specially commissioned by the authors, over a period of 25 years * functional correlations of vertebrate brains * concepts and methodology of modern comparative neuroscience * five full-colour posters giving an overview of the central nervous system of the vertebrates, ideal for mounting and display This monumental work is, and will remain, unique; the only source of such brilliant illustrations at both the macroscopic and microscopic levels.

Book Synopsis The Biology of Hagfishes by : Jørgen Mørup Jørgensen
Download or read book The Biology of Hagfishes written by Jørgen Mørup Jørgensen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hagfishes comprise a uniform group of some 60 species inhabiting the cool or deep parts of the oceans of both hemispheres. They are considered the most primitive representatives of the group of craniate chordates, which - apart from the hagfishes that show no traces of verte brae -includes all vertebrate animals. Consequently the hagfishes have played and still playa central role in discussions concerning the evolution of the vertebrates. Although most of the focus on hagfishes may be the result of their being primitive, it should not be forgotten that, at the same time, they are specialized animals with a unique way of life that is interesting in its own right. It is now more than 30 years since a comprehensive treatise on hagfishes was published. The Biology of Myxine, edited by Alf Brodal and Ragnar Fange (Universitetsforlaget, Oslo, 1963), provided a wealth of information on the biology of hagfishes, and over the years remained a major source of information and inspiration to students of hagfishes.

Book Synopsis The Jaynes Legacy by : Lawrence Wile
Download or read book The Jaynes Legacy written by Lawrence Wile and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2018-01-03 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Julian Jaynes' 1976 book, The Origins of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind, continues to arouse an unsettling ambivalence. Richard Dawkins called it "either complete rubbish or a work of consummate genius, nothing in between". The present book suggests that the bicameral mind is a phantasm; the dating of the origin of consciousness contradicts archeological and literary evidence; and the theory contributes nothing toward explaining why some physical states are conscious while others are not because the nonconscious bicameral brain is neurophysiologically equivalent to the conscious brain. However, the author pays tribute to Jaynes's work as a work of "consummate genius" because it compels us to re-evaluate the significance of humankind's earliest traditions and texts that might shine light on the "very suspicious totem of evolutionary mythology" that consciousness has evolved continuously and gradually from worms to man. The present book suggests that the evolution of the relationship between consciousnesses, mass, energy, and spacetime radically changed nearly 6,000 years ago during the epigenetic, evolutionary degeneration of a little-known, threadlike structure originating from the center of the central nervous system called Reissner's fiber. The earliest Egyptian, Hebrew, Indian and Chinese traditions, buried beneath the dust of fallen Babel and thousands of years of distortions and disguisings, describe this process during the origin of religion and mystical traditions.

Download or read book Nerve, Organ, and Tissue Regeneration: Research Perspectives written by Fredrick Seil and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nerve, Organ, and Tissue Regeneration: Research Perspectives presents the proceedings of a symposium held in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, on September 21–24, 1982. This book explores the neural and nonneural areas of regeneration, with emphasis on the nervous system. Organized into six parts encompassing 22 chapters, this compilation of papers examines the commitment of the Veterans Administration to deal with the clinical problem of spinal cord injury by establishing 19spinal cord injury treatment and rehabilitation centers throughout the United States. This book then discusses the characteristics of the neuronal response to axon injury, which vary from cellular hypertrophy and heightened metabolism to cell death. Other chapters consider the three phases of axonal regeneration, including sprout formation, elongation, and maturation. The final chapter deals with the structural and functional alterations that developed when the length of the mammalian intestine is shortened by excision or by-pass of a long segment. This book is a valuable resource for biologists, orthopedic surgeons, and neuroscientists.

Book Synopsis Techniques in Endocrine Research by : Peter Eckstein
Download or read book Techniques in Endocrine Research written by Peter Eckstein and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Techniques in Endocrine Research covers the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute held at Stratford-upon-Avon, England, under the Auspices of the University of Birmingham. The book focuses on the techniques in endocrinology, as well as x-ray crystallography, electron microscopy, and autoradiography. The selection first offers information on x-ray crystallography in hormone research and the separation and significance of hormone containing subcellular particles, including formation of granules, specificity of granule storing capacity, chromaffin cell granules, and adrenergic nerve granules. The book also takes a look at the possibilities for the use of antibody staining techniques in electron microscopy and in the study of neurosecretion. The publication examines problems in the ultrastructure of endocrine glands, with special reference to the mammalian pituitary, autoradiography in endocrine research, and chromatographic methods of separations. The text also ponders on the state, transport, and regulation of hormones in blood; immunochemical methods in hormone research; and interpretation of biochemical techniques. Discussions focus on the state of insulin in human blood, state of pituitary hormones in blood, and transport of thyroxin in blood. The selection is a vital source of information for readers interested in the techniques in endocrinology.

Book Synopsis Comparative Physiology and Evolution of the Autonomic Nervous System by : Charlotte B. Nilsson
Download or read book Comparative Physiology and Evolution of the Autonomic Nervous System written by Charlotte B. Nilsson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative Physiology and Evolution of the Autonomic Nervous System, the fourth volume in the Autonomic Nervous System series, is an up-to-date account of the comparative physiology and functional anatomy of the autonomic nervous system, with an emphasis on non-mammalian vertebrates. The book starts with an overview of the field and then discusses both 'classical' (adrenergic and cholinergic) non-adrenergic and non-cholinergic (NANC) types of neurotransmission. The account is then further developed by an examination of the autonomic nervous control of specific systems and organs. Readership: Researchers, working professionals, undergraduates and graduates working in neurology, cardiology, internal medicine, clinical pharmacology, and hypertension.
