Book Synopsis The Science of Photomedicine by : J.D. Regan
Download or read book The Science of Photomedicine written by J.D. Regan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the history of photomedicine dates back thousands of years, with even preliterate cultures appreciating the healing properties of sunlight, for many workers in the discipline photomedicine is associated with the observation about 100 years ago of Niels Finsen, a Danish physician. Finsen recognized that people with tuberculosis who lived in Norway and who had very little exposure to sunlight often developed facial lesions (lupus vulgaris) which would decrease and sometimes disappear during the summer months. This very observant physician reasoned that artificial light ought to produce the same effect as sunlight and began utilizing the radiation from the newly available carbon arc. At first, he used a glass lens to concentrate the radiation, but since this produced considerable burning, he replaced this with a hollow glass lens filled with water. However, while this reduced the heat burns, it did not actually duplicate the effect of direct sunlight. Finally, using a hollow lens filled with water but equipped with quartz windows, Finsen was able to imitate, even improve upon, the effect of sunlight. As a result, lupus vulgaris was practically eliminated from the Scandinavian countries.

Book Synopsis Phototherapy for Neonatal Hyperbilirubinemia by : Audrey K. Brown
Download or read book Phototherapy for Neonatal Hyperbilirubinemia written by Audrey K. Brown and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photobiological data from other species indicate that light can be both beneficial and detrimental to many biological processes. The time has come to evaluate the risk-benefit ratio of this modality of therapy for hyperbilirubinemia of the neonate. There has been little, thus far, to indicate immediate hazards from this form of therapy, but long-term sequelae have not been adequately assessed. A review of the experience of the past 15-17 years with this agent was thought to be useful. In. April 1974, the Pregnancy and Infancy Branch of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development sponsored a conference to assess the photobiological processes involved in phototherapy, as well as to document the long-term clinical experience of clinicians from all parts of the world who have used light in the treatment of hyperbilirubinemia since 1958. The papers and discussions presented in this book by distinguished investigators from the clinical and basic sciences illustrate not only the breadth of the problem, but also the value of an interdisciplinary approach to its resolution.

Book Synopsis Advances in Lipid Research by : Rodolfo Paoletti
Download or read book Advances in Lipid Research written by Rodolfo Paoletti and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Lipid Research reviews advances in lipid research and covers topics ranging from lipid histochemistry and control of plasma and liver triglyceride kinetics by carbohydrate metabolism and insulin. Lipid metabolism in tissue culture cells is also discussed, along with the carcinogenicity of steroids and the chemical and biological properties of heated and oxidized fats. Comprised of five chapters, this volume begins with an introduction to the histochemistry of lipids in both its qualitative and quantitative aspects, followed by an analysis of the roles of carbohydrate metabolism and insulin in relation to their control of the metabolism of plasma and liver triglycerides. Lipid metabolism in many tissue culture systems is the subject of the next chapter. The experimental and theoretical aspects of the connection between cancer and steroids are also examined. The last chapter deals with the possible harmful effects of heating dietary fats and how heating may alter the chemical and biological properties of fats. Attention is paid to auto-oxidation, carcinogenicity, and the interaction of heated fats with other dietary components. This monograph will be useful to students, practicing professionals, and research workers in biology and biochemistry.
