Lack of tolerance information makes it almost impossible to integrate computer-aided inspection with other modules of computer integrated manufacturing systems. If geometric tolerance information can be incorporated in CAD data structures, it will play a key role in the overall integration that the modern manufacturing industry is starving for. The current work is an attempt to make further inroads in this relatively new arena. A comprehensive tolerance information capturing system is proposed in this project. This system stores tolerance zone information in parametric form. It is mathematical, compact and compatible with current solid model data structures. An automated inspection system is developed that uses this stored information to verify actual feature conformance with the specified tolerance. Variational geometric models and space data transformations are central to this system. New concepts such as datum adjusted nominal feature and sequential tolerance verification algorithm are introduced. The system also has one component that checks for inconsistencies in tolerance specifications in the design stage. Overall, the system can perform many tasks in the inspection process for which currently human expert is required.

Book excerpt: This paper describes a general-purpose, representation-independent method for the accurate and computationally efficient registration of 3-D shapes including free-form curves and surfaces. The method handles the full six degrees of freedom and is based on the iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm, which requires only a procedure to find the closest point on a geometric entity to a given point. The ICP algorithm always converges monotonically to the nearest local minimum of a mean-square distance metric, and the rate of convergence is rapid during the first few iterations. Therefore, given an adequate set of initial rotations and translations for a particular class of objects with a certain level of 'shape complexity', one can globally minimize the mean-square distance metric over all six degrees of freedom by testing each initial registration. One important application of this method is to register sensed data from unfixtured rigid objects with an ideal geometric model, prior to shape inspection. Experimental results show the capabilities of the registration algorithm on point sets, curves, and surfaces.

Book excerpt: Feature recognition is a vital link in the integration of computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM). The significance of automated feature recognition has increased manifold in recent years, due to the ever growing emphasis on automation of manufacturing processes. However, there are several open challenges in the field of manufacturing feature recognition, including issues of robustness, computational speed, and applicability of a given technique to different manufacturing domains. Most of the existing research in this field employs one of the following methodologies for feature extraction: graph-based method, hint-based method and volumetric decomposition. The method proposed in this research does not exactly fit in to any of these approaches. It involves selective slicing of a given solid model at multiple levels and in multiple directions, and using contour based reasoning to identify form features. The slicing levels as well as the slicing directions are intelligently derived based on the geometry of the part. Each slice view comprises of one or more closed contours. By combining the information pertaining to the contours in successive slices, rules are formed to recognize manufacturing features. Features that can be recognized with this method include machining and casting/molding features. Recognition of different types of intersecting features is an important advantage of this method. This technique also effectively addresses another drawback of many feature recognition algorithms, which is the inability to recognize features with varying topology and/or geometry. The proposed method is validated by successfully testing the developed rules on different 3D part models.

Geometry and graphics is associated with physical objects included in simulated Modelica models. However, important graphics properties are missing from this model. In particular, physical objects cannot change their shape (geometry) and rendering features (graphics) dynamically. The physics of simulation, is often not affected by geometry of physical objects. For instance, a body is often approximated by its center of mass under certain conditions. Either simple predefined shapes or specifications of geometry via external files are used. The last facility leads to separation between the model and the corresponding graphics and geometry. Our proposal is to integrate 3D geometric and graphical features with Modelica models of physical objects. The 3D graphics information is specified explicitly via annotations containing certain graphics primitives or using instances from a specially designed geometry class library. The motivation, syntax and implementation outline for this approach are discussed in this report.

New data acquisition methods are producing large numbers of models in a variety of fields. Three-dimensional shape-based matching and registration (alignment) are key to the useful application of such models in areas from automated surface inspection to cancer detection and surgery. The three-dimensional models in these applications are typically huge. State-of-the-art simulations in computational fluid dynamics produce upward of four terabytes of data per second of flow. Research-level magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) resolutions can reach 1 cubic micro-meter. As a result, object registration and matching algorithms must handle very large amounts of data. The algorithms developed in this thesis accomplish automatic registration and matching of three-dimensional voxelized models. We employ features in a wavelet transform domain to accomplish registration. The features are extracted in a multiresolutional format, thus delineating features at various scales for robust and rapid matching. Registration is achieved through seeking peaks in sets of rotation quaternions using a voting scheme, then separately identifying translation. The method is robust to occlusion, clutter and noise. The efficacy of the algorithm is demonstrated through examples from solid modeling and medical imaging applications.

Book excerpt: The function is deƠ̐1ned by the integration of a smooth term to align the eigenvalues and a distance term between the eigenvectors at feature points to align the eigenvectors. The feature points are generated using the static points of certain eigenvectors of the surfaces. By using both the eigenvalues and the eigenvectors on these feature points, the computational efƠ̐1ciency is improved considerably without losing the accuracy in comparison to the approaches that use the eigenvectors for all vertices. The variation of the shape is expressed using a scale function deƠ̐1ned at each vertex. Consequently, the total energy function to align the two given surfaces can be deƠ̐1ned using the linear interpolation of the scale function derivatives. Through the optimization the energy function, the scale function can be solved and the alignment is achieved. After the alignment, the eigenvectors can be employed to calculate the point to point correspondence of the surfaces. Therefore, the proposed method can accurately deƠ̐1ne the displacement of the vertices. For both methods, we evaluate them by conducting some experiments on synthetic and real data using hippocampus and heart data. These experiments demonstrate the advantages and accuracy of our methods. We then integrate our methods to a workƠ̐2ow system named DataView. Using this workƠ̐2ow system, users can design, save, run, and share their workƠ̐2ow using their web-browsers without the need of installing any software and regardless of the power of their computers. We have also integrated Grid to this system therefore the same task can be executed on up to 64 different cases which will increase the performance of the system enormously.
