Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is an analytical summary and a critical synthesis of research at the International Water Management Institute over the past decade under its evolving research paradigm known popularly as 'more crop per drop'. The research synthesized here covers the full range of issues falling in the larger canvas of water-food-health-environment interface. Besides its immediate role in sharing knowledge with the research, donor, and policy communities, this volume also has a larger purpose of promoting a new way of looking at the water issues within the broader development context of food, livelihood, health and environmental challenges. More crop per drop: Revisiting a research paradigm contrasts the acquired wisdom and fresh thinking on some of the most challenging water issues of our times. It describes new tools, approaches, and methodologies and also illustrates them with practical application both from a global perspective and within the local and regional contexts of Asia and Africa. Since this volume brings together all major research works of IWMI, including an almost exhaustive list of citations, in one single set of pages, it is very valuable not only as a reference material for researchers and students but also as a policy tool for decision-makers and development agencies.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intention of this paper is to develop a framework for a new IWMI research program on environmental water requirements of aquatic ecosystems and environmental aspects associated with irrigated agriculture in river basins and wetlands. The program will be implemented primarily in the context of developing countries, but the paper also examines research questions, which are of general importance for eco-hydrology and environmental water resources management. At the same time, it does not purport to be a comprehensive coverage of the environmental water research field but is designed primarily for attention of specialists dealing with wetlands, water resources management and sustainable agricultural development within sister CGIAR centers and other similar international agencies. It is envisaged that some ideas for future research presented in the paper will also be of interest to hydrologists and ecologists engaged in developing the concepts of environmental water requirements of aquatic ecosystems. The introduction of the paper sets up the purpose of the document. This is followed by a description of a framework, which links different levels of water resources use and conservation of natural aquatic systems with various management interventions. The main focus areas of the proposed research are then discussed. They include estimating water requirements of aquatic ecosystems, evaluating scenarios of development and impacts of irrigated agriculture on rivers and wetlands, allocating water with the consideration of environmental thresholds, etc. The paper also discusses possible research activities, which are associated with these focus areas and presents examples of specific research projects that could be pursued internally or in partnership with other national and international institutions.

Book excerpt: The EXPRES expert system is designed to aid regulatory personnel in their assessment of the potential for pesticides to contaminate the soil and shallow groundwater environment. The system consists of one screening assessment model and two mathematical simulation models. This report reviews the theory of pesticide transport and transformation in the unsaturated zone, the models used in the expert system, the development and operation of EXPRES, results from an evaluation of EXPRES using four case studies typical of a pesticide assessment, and scenarios illustrating the application of EXPRES. Appendices include a list of pesticides in the EXPRES data base, sample screens, and lists of EXPRES files. This report serves as a user manual for the expert system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access volume is the first comprehensive assessment of the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region. It comprises important scientific research on the social, economic, and environmental pillars of sustainable mountain development and will serve as a basis for evidence-based decision-making to safeguard the environment and advance people’s well-being. The compiled content is based on the collective knowledge of over 300 leading researchers, experts and policymakers, brought together by the Hindu Kush Himalayan Monitoring and Assessment Programme (HIMAP) under the coordination of the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD). This assessment was conducted between 2013 and 2017 as the first of a series of monitoring and assessment reports, under the guidance of the HIMAP Steering Committee: Eklabya Sharma (ICIMOD), Atiq Raman (Bangladesh), Yuba Raj Khatiwada (Nepal), Linxiu Zhang (China), Surendra Pratap Singh (India), Tandong Yao (China) and David Molden (ICIMOD and Chair of the HIMAP SC). This First HKH Assessment Report consists of 16 chapters, which comprehensively assess the current state of knowledge of the HKH region, increase the understanding of various drivers of change and their impacts, address critical data gaps and develop a set of evidence-based and actionable policy solutions and recommendations. These are linked to nine mountain priorities for the mountains and people of the HKH consistent with the Sustainable Development Goals. This book is a must-read for policy makers, academics and students interested in this important region and an essentially important resource for contributors to global assessments such as the IPCC reports.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This working paper was released in August 2004. This research is part of a suite of research related to water reform, including the effects of expanding water trade and the management of environmental externalities associated with the supply and use of irrigation water. A foundation for this research is a detailed understanding of irrigated agriculture in the southern Murray-Darling Basin, including: the existing patterns of water use; the emerging trade in water property rights and the likely behavioural responses of individual irrigators to changing water prices. This paper explores the determinants of the elasticity of demand for irrigation water. It focuses on three main irrigated industries - rice, dairy and horticulture - to gain a greater understanding of the value that farmers place on water as an input. The paper provides detail relating to farm decision behaviour and biophysical production realities faced by irrigators in the southern Murray-Darling Basin.

The text introduces the techniques and strategies, as well as the challenges and the potential of the crucial approach, which can contribute so much to reducing land degradation and improving conservation and sustainability.

Book excerpt: The AQUASTAT Programme was initiated with a view to presenting a comprehensive picture of water resources and irrigation in the countries of Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean and providing systematic, up-to-date and reliable information on water for agriculture and rural development. This report presents the results of the most recent survey carried out in the 22 countries of the Southern and Eastern Asia region, and it analyzes the changes that have occurred in the ten years since the first survey. Following the AQUASTAT methodology, the survey relied as much as possible on country-based statistics and information.
