Download or read book Women in Agriculture in the Middle East written by Pnina Motzafi-Haller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-11-28 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a collaborative research project - an exciting fruit of the region's peace process - this book provides an in-depth examination and comparison of women's participation in agricultural production in four Middle-Eastern countries: Egypt, Jordan, Palestine and Israel. Each of the country studies is set in context, providing an overview of the status of women in the national economy and society, and in education and law, before proceeding to analyze the status and roles of women in the rural sector. These up-to-date overviews are based on published and unpublished data, much of which is available for the first time in English. But the book can also be read as a fascinating story of the way gender is introduced into a complex political setting where "development work" is done. It offers a reflexive, critical examination of the very process of its own production and some general observations about the links between academic and development-centred discourses.
Book Synopsis Increasing Resilience to Climate Change in the Agricultural Sector of the Middle East by :
Download or read book Increasing Resilience to Climate Change in the Agricultural Sector of the Middle East written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2013-04-04 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication aims to assist countries in understanding the specific challenges and opportunities posed by climate change in the agricultural sector in order to increase climate resilience and adapt to climate change. The report presents local-level priorities, informed by stakeholder input, to build agricultural resilience in both countries. The objectives of this study are threefold: 1) to improve the understanding of climate change projections and impacts on rural communities and livelihoods in selected regions of Jordan and Lebanon, specifically the Jordan River Valley and Lebanonâs Bekaa Valley; 2) to engage local communities, farmers, local experts, and local and national government representatives in a participatory fashion in helping craft agricultural adaptation options to climate change; and 3) to develop local and regional climate change action plans that formulate recommendations for investment strategies and strategic interventions in local agricultural systems. Therefore, this publication may serve as the analytical underpinning for ongoing discussions taking place within the governments, including the Ministries of Agriculture and Environment, on how to best move forward in building agricultural resilience to climate change.
Book Synopsis Rural Development in Eurasia and the Middle East by : Kurt Engelmann
Download or read book Rural Development in Eurasia and the Middle East written by Kurt Engelmann and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ties that bind Central Asia to the Middle East have increased dramatically in recent years, as political emancipation from Soviet rule has spurred the restoration of material culture shared by Turkic and Iranian peoples. Political institutions and farming practices, however, are still based on the Soviet model, with centralised large-scale agricultural production serving Russian rather than local needs. The contributors to this volume examine land reform and agricultural development in Russia, Central Asia, North Africa, and the Middle East. Their studies bring into question the evolutionary view of agricultural development, from small-scale subsistence to large-scale commercialised agricultural systems, and emphasise the need to understand the specific political, historical, and geographic contexts of rural development and land reform. This volume is a must for regional specialists, historians, economists, and those working on rural development issues throughout Eurasia.
