Book excerpt: Excerpt from Researches in Prehistoric and Protohistoric Comparative Philology, Mythology, and Archaeology, in Connection With the Origin of Culture in America and the Accad or Sumerian Families The following work contains a summary of various researches in their practical application. The substance of it was read in the Session Of1874; before the Anthropological Institute; but the paper as here given, and published in the Journal, includes the results of subsequent investigations. This process has not tended to consolidate, but rather to disturb the growth. At the same time it is the development of long preceding studies. When in Asia Minor, I soon began to see that the Hellenic theories were insufficient to explain the phenomena Of Greek Asia, or even Of Hellas itself, notwithstanding that so much Of mythology and of geography had been made to take an Hellenic shape. Investigations in the track of my late friend, Von Halm, as to the Albanian languages, afforded no better solution. It was not difficult to recognise, What SO many subsequent discoveries have compelled most men to acknowledge, that monuments and still more enduring myths, and to my sight even men, were to be found throughout Western Asia, belonging to epochs far anterior to the Hel lemic migrations. Book excerpt: Aspects of the prehistory of the Americas currently remain little understood, with suggested dates for the first human colonization varying widely between 40,000 and 14,000 years ago. In this volume, molecular geneticists and historical linguists debate the evidence for the first peopling of the Americas, and for the subsequent emergence of the remarkable genetic and linguistic diversity still seen among Native Americans to this day. Part I offers a general consideration of the theme of language distribution and genetic variation in human populations with emphasis on the population-specific polymorphism issue. In parts II and III linguistic variation in Native American populations and their accompanying molecular genetic variability are discussed by leading specialists. In the final part unanswered questions in historical linguistics are debated, including the macrofamily problem with particular reference to the postulated but contoversial Amerind family.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past 30 years, the relationship between humans and the environment has changed more drastically than during any previous period in human history. Local sustainable exploitation of natural resources has been overridden by global interests indifferent to the detrimental impact of their activities on local environments and their inhabitants. Increasingly efficient technology has reduced the need for human labor, but improved medical treatment favors reproduction and survival, creating a growing imbalance between population density and food supply. Rapid transportation is introducing alien species to distant terrestrial and aquatic environments, where they displace critical elements in the local food chain. This succinct and profusely illustrated volume applies evolutionary and cultural theory to the interpretation of prehistoric cultural development in the western hemisphere. After reviewing cultural development in Mesoamerica and the central Andes, Meggers examines adaptation in North and South American regions with similar environments to evaluate the influence of adaptive constraints on cultural content. What made the human species dominant on the planet is the substitution of cultural behavior for biological behavior. Prehistoric Americans applied this ability to develop sustainable relationships with their environments. Many succeeded and others did not. Paleoclimatic reconstructions can be compared with archeological sequences and ethnographic descriptions to identify cultural behavior responsible for the difference. Comparison of the responses of Amaonians and Mayans to episodes of severe drought provides useful insights into what we are doing wrong. Betty J. Meggers has been a research associate at the Smithsonian Institution since 1951. She has conducted fieldwork in Brail, Guyana, Veneuela, and Ecuador. Her publications include archeological monographs, edited volumes, general books on Amaonia and Ecuador, and over 200 articles on cultural ecology, cultural diffusion, pottery analysis, and transpacific contact. Her contributions have been recognied by six honorary doctorates from universities in Brail, Argentina, and Ecuador.
