This story is about the men and women involved in the search and recovery mission for Colonel Morris in Kurdistan.

Despite the threat of heavy losses of ships and lives, no hospital ships, which had to be lit, could accompany the convoys as they would betray a convoy’s position. The solution was to create a fleet of 30 small Merchant Navy vessels of about 1,500 gross tons, mostly from coastal trade. These ‘Rescue Ships’, commanded and manned by Merchant Navy personnel, carried medical teams, and life-saving equipment including operating theaters, hospital beds, ‘Carley’ floats, and hoists. Undeterred either by either enemy action or atrocious weather conditions, these vessels accompanied close to 800 convoys and saved 4,194 lives from ships sunk in the North Atlantic and with the Arctic convoys. During their service, seven Rescue Ships were lost. This is a story packed with suspense, danger, achievement and tragedy. As the author, Vice Admiral Schofield, who was closely involved in the establishment of the fleet, writes, it is a record ‘of great humanitarian endeavour, of superb acts of courage, of a display of seamanship of the highest order, of a devotion to duty by medical officers under the most arduous conditions imaginable, of great deeds by men of the Merchant Navy in little ships on voyages they were never designed to undertake.’

The Iraqi government attacked the Kurdish cities, towns and villages in Iraqi Kurdistan. The Kurds existed thousands of years before the arrival of the Arabs in the Middle East. In July 1963 the Iraqi troops brutally attacked the innocent Kurdish civilians. My father was a police officer at the local police station in Sulaimaniyah, and he knew that the Iraqi Military would attack our city and the other provinces of Kurdistan. My dad told us to be ready to leave the city and go to the town of Berzinje, we all left except my dad and then to the village of Wenderene. Then my father arrived too, and said the military imprisoned, and killed, so many innocent people including teenagers. We had two big photos of Mustafa Barzani and Mam Jalal Talabani, my father tried to break the photos, but he cut his fingers while doing that. The son of our x-landlord was killed without any legitimate reason; his parents buried him in the house. My aunties friend Kak Fars helped us a lot in the village. My grandfather had a donkey in order to get him to the vineyard in Berzinje. My dad asked us to go to the village of Wanderene and take some foods and blankets. We tried our best in order to hide from the Iraqi (National Guards), these troops were sent from Baghdad the capital of Iraq.

Book excerpt: Exploring a new political phenomenon in the Middle East, this book studies the reconciliation of nationalism and Islamism by Islamic political parties in the context of nation states. Islamism in Kurdistan has become significantly framed by the politics of nationalism. Although the concept of religious nationalism has been discussed substantially before, this work highlights a new brand of religious nationalism that has emerged as a result of intertwining nationalism and Islamism. The focus of this study is on the development of religious nationalism in the continuously tumultuous region of the Middle East. The volume investigates whether Islamism in Kurdistan is limited by the politics of nationalism – which is an accentuated example for the whole Middle East region. By looking at the Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU), the research studies Islamism in the Kurdistan Region to elaborate on this new type of politics. This is essentially due to the absence of a politically recognised nation state, which renders Kurds to be particularly susceptible to various manifestations of nationalism. Offering an account on the spread of the Muslim Brotherhood in the Kurdistan Region, this original research on Kurdish nationalism will be a key text for students and researchers interested in nationalism, Islamism and Middle East politics.
