Collectively, these editions form a critical anthology of requiem masses composed by musicians of San Marco over a long period extending from the late sixteenth century to the closing years of the nineteenth century. The featured musicians of this first edition—Giovanni Croce (ca. 1557–1609) and Giovanni Rovetta (ca. 1596–1668)—may not be very familiar today, and their contributions to music-making at San Marco may not be deemed equal in stature to other masters such as Claudio Monteverdi and Francesco Cavalli, but they were indisputably highly influential figures at different points in Venice’s (and San Marco’s) past. Both requiems are relics of the a cappella tradition at San Marco during the early baroque era, when the famous cathedral served as the doge’s private chapel. These requiem settings are highly accessible, and they function as effectively today as they did in the distant past.

The featured musician of this volume is Ferdinando Bertoni (1725–1813), who was much celebrated during the classical period as a composer of both sacred and secular music and who gained significant exposure as the master of music at St. Mark’s. Most of the music in the edition can be firmly connected to the funeral of the heroic Admiral Angelo Emo (1731–92), which was held in St. Mark’s during 1792. Emo was no ordinary Venetian: he was Venice’s last admiral to lead La Serenissima into battle and a Procuratore de ultra of St. Mark’s, a position placing him in the tier immediately below the ruling doge, Lodovico Manin. The music assembled here for the first time in a modern critical edition is a valuable relic of this temporal juncture in the history, not only of the ducal church, but of Venice broadly. The requiem stands as one of the last outstandingly sumptuous works performed at the ducal church before Venice’s fall from grace in the closing years of the eighteenth century. With its kaleidoscopic mixture of styles, the work may sit comfortably as the showpiece in a concert program, or, authentically, as the musical backbone of an ecclesiastical setting, as it was originally intended.

Despite being relatively obscure today, these individuals heroically preserved and developed the musical tradition at St. Mark’s in the wake of Venice’s fall in 1797. The two requiems assembled here, for the first time in a modern critical edition, tell something of this transitional moment. Perotti’s setting, which originates from the early century, holds strongly to the past and specifically the style of composition practiced at St. Mark’s when it was a private ducal chapel during the baroque era. Coccon’s requiem, by contrast, originates late in the century and looks to the future, exploiting the rising star of Christian worship, the Romantic organ. Aside from historical interest, this volume offers modern performers two high-quality requiems for choral groups of wide abilities. Although the music was originally conceived for ecclesiastical service, the varied textures for choral and solo performance provide musical interest, whether it be in an authentic sacred or secular environment.

Composed as a ballet for the renowned choreographer Martha Graham (18941991), it was the result of a close collaboration between Copland and Graham, and the music quickly took on a life of its own. However, the best known versions of the score, those most frequently recorded and heard in concert, differ in form and musical content from the original ballet, which was scored for a chamber ensemble of thirteen instruments and premiered by the Martha Graham Dance Company at the Library of Congress on 30 October 1944. This edition presents the first completed engraving of the original version of Appalachian Spring, providing musicians and scholars access to the score as it has been performed for more than 75 years by the Graham Company. On each page of the score, the editors have included stills from the 1958 film of the ballet, with Graham dancing the lead role, in order to highlight the connection between music and dance. An introductory essay explores the creation of the work, the musical structure, the origins of and differences among multiple versions of the score, and the continued significance and influence of Coplands music. The critical commentary draws on manuscript and published sources, as well as Graham Company performance practice, to illuminate editorial decisions. The edition also includes appendices that present a comparison of historical tempi, markings from the Graham tradition for augmenting the orchestration, and a selected discography of different versions of the score.

But during the first half century of motion pictures very few Americans would have thought to call an American movie "art." Up through the 1950s, American movies were regarded as a form of popular, even lower-class, entertainment. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, viewers were regularly judging Hollywood films by artistic criteria previously applied only to high art forms. In Hollywood Highbrow, Shyon Baumann for the first time tells how social and cultural forces radically changed the public's perceptions of American movies just as those forces were radically changing the movies themselves. The development in the United States of an appreciation of film as an art was, Baumann shows, the product of large changes in Hollywood and American society as a whole. With the postwar rise of television, American movie audiences shrank dramatically and Hollywood responded by appealing to richer and more educated viewers. They are now been replaced by heavy trucks and lorries. African traditional methods of healing are now been substituted by hospitals. In all these, I will always love and remember Africa, the home of my birth and must respect her cultures and traditions as an AFRICAN AUTHOR.
