Book excerpt: Employees who may worry about the effect of their workplaces on their health often don't know how to find out about the safety of their workplaces and possible health and reproductive hazards. Reproductive Hazards in the Workplace aids working women in making important decisions about pregnancy and job-related health problems. It gives women a standard for judging their work situations, shows how they might improve them, and, armed with increased knowledge, how they might seek to improve working conditions for all pregnant women. To enable women to take action, Regina Kenen's straightforward book features: lists of pertinent questions to ask when looking for information regarding risks and hazards information on relevant legislation actual cases of pregnant women in the workplace and how they dealt with occupational risks lists of regulatory agencies, governmental, legal, medical, and voluntary agencies providing information and services regarding environmental health suggestions for small, individual, and larger group social action activities Reproductive Hazards in the Workplace will help women understand the health risks present at their workplaces and to reduce those occupational risks for the pregnant worker and, consequently, encourage all women, pregnant or not, to protect their occupational health and safety. This book provides a combination of technical, physical, psychological, and social materials and "how to" suggestions (guidelines for judging risks and hazards and social action suggestions). Reproductive Hazards in the Workplace is ideal for pregnant women or women planning to become pregnant in the near future who are now in the workplace and who are concerned about health risks. Union stewards, occupational health and women's health specialists, and personnel department officers of corporations may also find this timely book to be of assistance in planning programs for improved occupational health.

Book Synopsis Occupational Health and Safety in the Care and Use of Research Animals by : Committee on Occupational Safety and Health in Research Animal Facilities
Download or read book Occupational Health and Safety in the Care and Use of Research Animals written by Committee on Occupational Safety and Health in Research Animal Facilities and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-06-23 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written about the care of research animals. Yet little guidance has appeared on protecting the health and safety of the people who care for or use these animals. This book, an implementation handbook and companion to Guide For the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, identifies principles for building a program and discusses the accountability of institutional leaders, managers, and employees for a program's success. It provides a detailed description of risks-- physical and chemical hazards, allergens and zoonoses, and hazards from experiments--which will serve as a continuing reference for the laboratory. The book offers specific recommendations for controlling risk through administrative procedures, facility design, engineering controls, and periodic evaluations. The volume focuses on the worker, with detailed discussions of work practices, the use of personal protective gear, and the development of an emergency response plan. This handbook will be invaluable to administrators, researchers, and employees in any animal research facility. It will also be of interest to personnel in zoos, animal shelters, and veterinary facilities.

Book Synopsis Idea to Product by : Nancy J. Alexander
Download or read book Idea to Product written by Nancy J. Alexander and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The young investigator with an idea has to negotiate many institutional, federal, and industrial challenges in order to get a product to market. Nowhere is described the steps in the development of new drugs, diagnos tics, or devices; the person with an idea has nowhere to turn for information and details. The young investigator may understand the elements of basic and clinical research, but ordinarily has no insight into novel ways of finding research funding or how to explore to find the funding opportunities that are available. The young investigator has little knowledge of the mecha nisms to bring an idea through the developmental phases to the market. There are other players in this complex endeavor with whom he or she has no contact, including those from industry, the Food and Drug Administration, and the legal community. Exposure to the philosophy of product develop ment and to procedural information would be useful to the scientific com munity, as would contact with those who have successfully taken an idea to a finished product. A first attempt to do this was the symposium on Idea to Product: The Process, sponsored by Serono Symposia USA and held No vember 17 to 20, 1994, in Washington, D.C. This book comprises the pro ceedings of that meeting. The editors are indebted to the many contributors to this volume, and we are especially grateful to Serono Symposia USA and to Leslie Nies and her staff for their expertise in organizing the symposium.
