Book excerpt: "This book provides a critical commentary on politics, language, literature, identity, media, religion, caste, and the Indian diaspora over the last two centuries." "While analysing and synthesizing work done in diverse intellectual traditions, it discusses the significance of Sanskrit and its relationship with the regional languages of India; the relationship between Hindi and Urdu; and the role of English as a language of colonial administration and education after Independence." "The study also deals with the new generation of post-Independence Indian English writers, who express a whole range of emotions, which were articulated through the vernacular in the colonial period. It explores the representation of Indian identities - Hindu and Muslim - through Hindi films and also looks into the role of Hindi television programmes in the construction of national and regional identities." "The authors examine the problems of creating a national identity; the rise of Hindu politics in the 1990s; and Hindu-Muslim relations in the context of religious reform and political loyalty to the nation-state. They also analyse the relationship of the Indian diaspora with the motherland and the host country." "Going beyond conventional boundaries of nation-states, academic disciplines, and conceptual categories, this interdisciplinary work will aid those embarking on a 'new' discovery of India. It will be useful to scholars and students of politics, history, literature, and cultural studies."--BOOK JACKET.

This book was released on with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is an attempt to analyze the construction of India by five authors in their seminal works of literature. The first of the five novels is A Passage to India by E. M. Forster published in 1924. Chronologically, it is followed by Midnight’s Children, the “Booker of Bookers” for the year 1993, published in 1981 by Salman Rushdie. The third one is The Great Indian Novel , modeled on the Great Indian Epic, The Mahabharata, published in 1989 by Shashi Tharoor. The fourth one belongs to the canon of Regional Literature and is composed by Kamleshwar. The original title is Kitne Pakistan published in 2000 and the English translation Partitions came in 2006. The book makes use of the text in Hindi for reference and quoting. There are two reasons for this: first, language is not merely a medium between the text and the reader, but also something that carries a ‘voice’. The use of Hindi by Kamleshwar has a bearing on the kind of di scourse bei ng generated, as di scussed l ater. Secondl y, language acts in a cultural context and hence the impact that it carries is properly highlighted only in the original language in which the work has been composed. A translated work is, at times, not able to convey the spirit behind the words. The quotes from the text have been given in Roman script. The last one taken is Kiran Desai’s The Inheritance of Loss, published in 2006 and the winner of the “Man Booker Prize” in the same year.

Book excerpt: One unmistakable feature of the Indian highway is the presence of these brightly decorated trucks that ply the country's roads. The men who drive these trucks spend long hours on the road and can be away from their families for weeks at a time, so their trucks act as a second home and they take great pride in them. In Horn Please photographer Dan Eckstein travelled across India's byzantine and burgeoning road network documenting these elaborate trucks - representing a blinding mash up of new and old India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inaugural volume of Princeton Readings in Religions brings together the work of thirty scholars of the religions of India in a new anthology designed to reshape the ways in which the religious traditions of India are understood. The book contains translations of forty-five works, most of which have never before been available in a Western language. Many of these highlight types of discourse (especially ritual manuals, folktales, and oral narratives) and voices (vernacular, esoteric, domestic, and female) that have not been sufficiently represented in previous anthologies and standard accounts of Indian religions. The selections are drawn from ancient texts, medieval manuscripts, modern pamphlets, and contemporary fieldwork in rural and urban India. They represent every region in South Asia and include Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, Sikh, and Muslim materials. Some are written texts reflecting elite concerns, while others are transcriptions of oral narratives told by nonliterate peasants. Some texts are addressed to a public and pan-Indian audience, others to a limited coterie of initiates in an esoteric sect, and still others are intended for a few women gathered in the courtyard for a household ceremony. The editor has reinforced this diversity by arranging the selections within several overarching themes and categories of discourse (hymns, rituals, narratives, and religious interactions), and encourages us to make our own connections.
