Book excerpt: During this contract work continued on research into the allied areas of nonparametric/robust methods and non-Gaussian models in communication theory. The former area was represented by work of Sullivan on robust processing of simultaneous data from an array of elements in which the standard analytical assumption of time independence is retained but dependence at an instant among the elements is allowed for and exploited, and by work of Keeler which treats real-time, fixed-memory-size detection with an m-dependent sequence of rank test statistics. J.H. Yang's invention of a two-channel phase-locked loop led to the inception of research on the quotient of two Gaussian processes - a non-central Cauchy process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is based on the observation that communication is the central operation of discovery in all the sciences. In its "active mode" we use it to "interrogate" the physical world, sending appropriate "signals" and receiving nature's "reply". In the "passive mode" we receive nature's signals directly. Since we never know a prioriwhat particular return signal will be forthcoming, we must necessarily adopt a probabilistic model of communication. This has developed over the approximately seventy years since it's beginning, into a Statistical Communication Theory (or SCT). Here it is the set or ensemble of possible results which is meaningful. From this ensemble we attempt to construct in the appropriate model format, based on our understanding of the observed physical data and on the associated statistical mechanism, analytically represented by suitable probability measures. Since its inception in the late '30's of the last century, and in particular subsequent to World War II, SCT has grown into a major field of study. As we have noted above, SCT is applicable to all branches of science. The latter itself is inherently and ultimately probabilistic at all levels. Moreover, in the natural world there is always a random background "noise" as well as an inherent a priori uncertainty in the presentation of deterministic observations, i.e. those which are specifically obtained, a posteriori. The purpose of the book is to introduce Non-Gaussian statistical communication theory and demonstrate how the theory improves probabilistic model. The book was originally planed to include 24 chapters as seen in the table of preface. Dr. Middleton completed first 10 chapters prior to his passing in 2008. Bibliography which represents remaining chapters are put together by the author's close colleagues; Drs. Vincent Poor, Leon Cohen and John Anderson. email [email protected] to request Ch.10

Although these procedures are, to some extent, nonparametric in nature, the basic assumption implicit in such data analysis has usually been that the time series is Gaussian or nearly so. We do not know very well how efficient and useful these procedures are in case the data structure is distinctly non-Gaussian. Classical data analysts who handle data sets composed of independent observations have noticed over the last three decades that robust and adaptive nonparametric methods have worked very efficiently even for situations where large implicit variability in the data has effectively ruled out a Gaussian model. It is evident that we are moving from an era of simple signal processing with relatively primitive electronic cir cuits to one in which digital processing systems, in a combined hardware-software configura. tion, are quite capable of implementing advanced mathematical and statistical procedures. Moreover, as these processing techniques become more sophisticated and powerful, the sharper resolution of the resulting system brings into question the classic distributional assumptions of Gaussianity for both noise and signal processes. This in turn opens the door to a fundamental reexamination of structure and inference methods for non-Gaussian sto chastic processes together with the application of such processes as models in the context of filtering, estimation, detection and signal extraction. Based on the premise that such a fun damental reexamination was timely, in 1981 the Office of Naval Research initiated a research effort in Non-Gaussian Signal Processing under the Selected Research Opportunities Program.

Book excerpt: With the plethora of devices that operate in current communication networks, there is a non-zero probability that radio frequency signals from disparate sources may interfere with each other and therefore one has to contend with unwanted signals that corrupt the desired signal. The unwanted part, collectively referred to as noise, may be attributed to a number of factors ranging from device irregularities to varied ambient phenomena. Traditionally by applying the central limit theorem, noise in communication systems has been characterized by a Gaussian distribution. However, it has been recognized time and again, that in plenty of cases this is an abstraction of the real characteristics of the noise since for a variety of reasons the central limit theorem may not hold true for the observed noise. Such noise is generally referred to as being non-Gaussian. The general belief about non-Gaussian noise is that it deteriorates signal fidelity, resulting in unreliable communication. However, the loss in reliability is due to the fact that almost all communication systems are designed to well handle Gaussian noise and hence suffers loss when this assumption is not true. We characterize the performance of coded and uncoded communication systems in non-Gaussian noise. More specifically we consider robust decoding techniques when the noise is impulsive and is correlated. We incorporate the effect of non-ideal interleaving on system performance when the noise has memory and provide several design recommendations for such environments. We also propose techniques to acquire information on the statistics of the noise when it can be modeled as a Markovian-Gaussian process and analyse the performance of such estimators. These techniques are then applied to contemporary technologies such as cognitive transmission and impulse radio ultra wideband transmission, as a proof of concept, and to quantify the benefits that exist in accurately characterizing the interference in such systems.

Book excerpt: A statistical procedure which maintains high performance over a class of noise distributions is called robust. The dissertation establishes the identity between multi-input signal processors which are asymptotically optimal in a density minimizing Fisher Information and those which are robust in the sense of maximizing the minimum performance over the class of noise distributions. The problem considered is more general than that treated by previous investigators. Maximin robust detectors of coherent and noncoherent location shift in p-variate noise are derived. A multi-variate scale-related problem, equivalent in the univariate case to the non-coherent location shift situation, is also treated. A generalized soft limiter, shown to be maximin robust against a contaminated normal distribution, is analyzed detail and a performance table is given. (Author).

Book excerpt: The main objective of ICCSAI2013 is to provide a platform for the presentation of top and latest research results in global scientific areas. The conference aims to provide a high level international forum for researcher, engineers and practitioners to present and discuss recent advances and new techniques in computer science and artificial intelligence. It also serves to foster communications among researcher, engineers and practitioners working in a common interest in improving computer science, artificial intelligence and the related fields. We have received 325 numbers of papers through "Call for Paper", out of which 94 numbers of papers were accepted for publication in the conference proceedings through double blind review process. The conference is designed to stimulate the young minds including Research Scholars, Academicians, and Practitioners to contribute their ideas, thoughts and nobility in these two disciplines.
