Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was the late nineteenth century 'Victorian' or 'modern'? Why did the New Woman disappear from literary history? Where did T. S. Eliot's poetics of the city come from? In this essential guide, Ruth Robbins explores an era often named an 'age of transition' which exists uneasily between the apparent certainties of the Victorians and the advent of a Modernist aesthetics of instability. Robbins considers some of the central literary categories and themes of the period (decadence, realism, nostalgia, New Woman writing, degeneration, imperialism and early modernism) in writings by both major and 'minor' writers, thereby creating a complex picture of transitions, continuities and breaks with the past. By examining this tumultuous era as an age in its own right, Pater to Forster, 1873-1924 offers the reader a rather different history of the late Victorians and Modernists, and retells that history from a new perspective.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Commissioner of Elementary Schools, 1921 During the two-year period covered by this report, the ideals and the activities of elementary school instruction have been affected and in some important ways modified by the world war. A large part of the report must therefore be given to considerations of the effects thus produced. From the very outbreak of the war, when first reports came from Belgium, it became evident to American educators that it would be necessary to revise their long cherished estimate of the German system of school and university education. The deeds done by order of German high command, attested in a way too terrible to be mistaken, that a training in material efficiency and a development of a narrow national pride and arrogance, were not sufficient for the making of a nation of true greatness, nor the fitting of a people for genuine service to humanity. It thus became clear to all that in our schools the teaching of American efficiency and of American patriotism must give special emphasis to the rights of weak people and of little nations, to the inculcation of that genuine democracy that tends to the welfare of mankind; and that estimates the grandeur of a people not by its conquests, but by its service to the good of all the world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do we often teach English poetic meter by the Greek terms iamb and trochee? How is our understanding of English meter influenced by the history of England's sense of itself in the nineteenth century? Not an old-fashioned approach to poetry, but a dynamic, contested, and inherently nontraditional field, "English meter" concerned issues of personal and national identity, class, education, patriotism, militarism, and the development of English literature as a discipline. The Rise and Fall of Meter tells the unknown story of English meter from the late eighteenth century until just after World War I. Uncovering a vast and unexplored archive in the history of poetics, Meredith Martin shows that the history of prosody is tied to the ways Victorian England argued about its national identity. Gerard Manley Hopkins, Coventry Patmore, and Robert Bridges used meter to negotiate their relationship to England and the English language; George Saintsbury, Matthew Arnold, and Henry Newbolt worried about the rise of one metrical model among multiple competitors. The pressure to conform to a stable model, however, produced reactionary misunderstandings of English meter and the culture it stood for. This unstable relationship to poetic form influenced the prose and poems of Robert Graves, Siegfried Sassoon, Wilfred Owen, W. B. Yeats, Ezra Pound, and Alice Meynell. A significant intervention in literary history, this book argues that our contemporary understanding of the rise of modernist poetic form was crucially bound to narratives of English national culture.
