Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reports of the President and the Treasurer of Harvard College, Vol. 2: 1903-04 The Scientific School is in a peculiar position among the various departments of Harvard University. It is at once a school of general training and a school for professional training. In its first capacity it requires a fair knowledge of at least three languages and requires all its students to take elementary courses in a considerable variety of subjects. In its second capacity it undertakes to prepare engineers, chemists, archi tects, naturalists, foresters, etc., who will be capable of earning something in their respective occupations immediately on leaving the School. Because of this professional aim it has to be conducted on a group system, with complete liberty of election between groups but with little liberty of election among subjects. Its system is chiefly One of prescription, as is inevitable in a school which undertakes to give professional training. Moreover, it prescribes more courses a year for its students than Harvard College prescribes, so that the work of the students is strenuous and unremitting. It also insists that its students should make good use of a part of every summer vacation for field work in surveying, geology, and mining and metallurgy, and for shop-work. It is essential that the undergraduates should reflect seriously upon the relation of their different courses to one another, and upon the bearing of the work Of one year on that Of the next. For this purpose it is important that they should discuss the matter with Older men who are in the habit of considering college work as a whole, and that they Should do so, not perfunctorily or hurriedly with advisers who have many students consulting them, but with instructors who have a small enough number under their charge to give to each one the time required. With that Object every member Of the Faculty, unless specially excused, is expected to confer with four or five members of the entering class, discussing with them at the outset their choice of electives for the Freshman year, and in the following spring their plan of studies-for the rest Of their college course. Such a duty lays an additional burden upon the members of the Faculty, but they have accepted it heartily and the closer contact with them will be an inestimable benefit to the undergraduates. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Reports of the President and the Treasurer of Harvard College, 1898-99 When the Overseers insisted that algebra and elementary history should be required subjects, they diminished sensibly the range of election of studies open to candidates for admission, and thereby impaired the best reliance of the Faculty for pre venting the total amount of work required of any individual candidate from being raised. The scheme finally adopted must, therefore, be very carefully administered for several years, in order to prevent an increase in the work required for admission. It was pointed out in the last report that almost every department represented among the subjects required for admission feels that it has gained something under the new definitions or under the new methods of util izing for admission the various permitted subjects. Whether these departmental convictions have been reconciled with the declared policy of the Faculty not to increase the requirements for admission remains to be seen. The new plan for admission will bring the College into closer connection with high schools throughout the country, and will tend to enlarge the election of studies in all secondary schools in consequence it will tend to make secondary educa tion less discursive for the individual pupil than it has been. The new requirements are not only perfectly adapted to the needs of the classical schools - indeed, are better adapted to the programmes of well-conducted classical schools than any requirements for admission to Harvard College have ever been.
