Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commercial Relations of the United States, Vol. 19: Reports From the Consuls of the United States on the Commerce, Manufactures, Etc., Of Their Consular Districts; May, 1882 Kerosene oil shows a prominent part of the imports into this country from the United States, and it is satisfactory to observe from the statis tics below that this branch of our trade with China is increasing each year. Being a much cheaper oil, and producing a more brilliant light than the native article, it is but natural to suppose that it will at no distant day take the place of the latter, to no small extent, especially at the treaty ports and places in close proximity to them. It is estimated that at least one home out of every six in the native city of Shanghai now uses kerosene in preference to native oil, and in the foreign settlements it is more extensively consumed by most classes of Chinese. As I have remarked in my previous observations upon the trade in kerosene oil, there is more or less opposition' to its extended develop ment on the part of the manufacturers of the native article, which is not to be wondered at in view of the fact that their interests have been materially affected since its introduction into China; and in some places I understand that influence has been brought to bear on the local officials to use their exertions to discourage the use of this oil, but their efforts in this direction cannot have materially impaired the trade - a proof-of this fact the statistics at the foot show - the deliveries during the year 1881, as compared with 1878, having increased about threefold. Kerosene oil burns much longer and is about one-third cheaper than the native kind. There are eight vessels on their way to this port with cargoes of kerosene, aggregating cases, a considerable portion of which I understand has been sold to arrive.
