Book excerpt: This book discusses the daily life and culture of enslaved Africans and their descendants. Enslaved Africans and their descendants comprised a significant portion of colonial Virginia populations, with most living on rural slave quarters adjacent to the agricultural fields in which they labored. Archaeological excavations into these home sites have provided unique windows into the daily lifeways and culture of these early inhabitants. subfloor pits be-neath the houses. The most common explanations of the functions of these pits are as storage places for personal belongings or root vegetables, and some contextual and ethnohistoric data suggest they may have served as West African-style shrines. Through analysis of 103 subfloor pits dating from the 17th through mid-19th centuries, Samford reveals how data on shape, location, surface area, and depth, as well as contextual analysis of artifact assemblages, can show how subfloor pits functioned for the enslaved. Archaeology reveals the material circumstances of slaves' lives, which in turn opens the door to illuminating other aspects of life: spirituality, symbolic meanings assigned to material goods, social life, individual and group agency, and acts of resistance and accommodation. about how West African, possibly Igbo, cultural traditions were maintained and transformed in the Virginia Chesapeake.

Increasingly the leaders of those communities are drawing on the services of psychologists to help them realise the potential of their “human capital”. What do these business psychologists do to assist in the identification, motivation and development of the talent that employees bring into their communities? The authors, all Principal Members of the Association of Business Psychologists, are experienced and qualified professionals who candidly share their experiences and learning derived from those experiences. They provide case studies and examples from real interventions, they ask provocative questions about conventional thinking and practice and they explain the models that help them make sense of the complex organisations in which they operate. Business Psychology in Practice takes us on an excursion behind the scenes in organisations. This book will be of interest to consultants, those who commission their services and anybody wrestling with ‘people issues’.

Download or read book Walking Dena'ina written by Douglas Deur and published by . This book was released on 2021-02-04 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume describes Telaquana Trail, an ancient pathway ascending from the shores of Qizhjeh Vena, Lake Clark, through tundra and timbered valleys, into a high-elevation expanse of rolling tundra and smaller interior lakes nearly 50 miles north of Lake Clark. The pathway is an ancestral corridor used by Native peoples since the beginning of remembered time. The name "Telaquana Trail" first appears in the written record by no later than 1921, when Colonel A.J. Macnab, one of the first outsiders to visit the area for recreational big game hunting, mentioned taking a canoe to "go down the lake to look for the Telaquana Trail." Stephen Capps of the U.S. Geological Survey traveled and mapped the area in 1929. Producing the first detailed public map of the trail, Capps marks it as the "Native Route." As Dena'ina interviewees will attest, non-Native travel along the trail by this date was ample, but the corridor was still largely conceived of as Native space. Today, as the traces of significantly Anglo-American mining and trapping communities fade from the landscape, Dena'ina people still look to the trail corridor as a touchstone for their shared history and a cosmological axis of their own unique cultural geography. In the homes of Dena'ina people today, the landmarks of the Telaquana Trail are still remembered and the names of these places still spoken.

Book Synopsis Learning in Virtual Worlds by : Sue Gregory
Download or read book Learning in Virtual Worlds written by Sue Gregory and published by Athabasca University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three-dimensional (3D) immersive virtual worlds have been touted as being capable of facilitating highly interactive, engaging, multimodal learning experiences. Much of the evidence gathered to support these claims has been anecdotal but the potential that these environments hold to solve traditional problems in online and technology-mediated education—primarily learner isolation and student disengagement—has resulted in considerable investments in virtual world platforms like Second Life, OpenSimulator, and Open Wonderland by both professors and institutions. To justify this ongoing and sustained investment, institutions and proponents of simulated learning environments must assemble a robust body of evidence that illustrates the most effective use of this powerful learning tool. In this authoritative collection, a team of international experts outline the emerging trends and developments in the use of 3D virtual worlds for teaching and learning. They explore aspec ts of learner interaction with virtual worlds, such as user wayfinding in Second Life, communication modes and perceived presence, and accessibility issues for elderly or disabled learners. They also examine advanced technologies that hold potential for the enhancement of learner immersion and discuss best practices in the design and implementation of virtual world-based learning interventions and tasks. By evaluating and documenting different methods, approaches, and strategies, the contributors to Learning in Virtual Worlds offer important information and insight to both scholars and practitioners in the field.

Book Synopsis Beating the Fascists by : Sean Birchall
Download or read book Beating the Fascists written by Sean Birchall and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The compelling account of the extraordinary activities of Anti-Fascist Action (AFA) - by those who were there on the frontline - an organised and committed group of ordinary working class people who, during the 1980s and 1990s took the fight to the far right - and won! Following the electoral collapse of the National Front in 1979, fascists went on the rampage. Race attacks escalated. NF/BNP gangs employed violence on the streets, on the terraces and to control the music scene. Young anti-fascists stepped up. A new hardline leadership emerged and AFA was formed in 1985. "A state of war" was how one rueful BNP leader would describe what happened next. Not only is Beating the Fascists a meticulously researched study, it is also a much-needed piece of history from below. Throughout, the voices of working class anti-fascists come across hard, clear, and without apology. Illuminating and sometimes chilling by turn, the running commentary they provide helps ensure the tempo never flags. Gradually the reader is drawn into an outlaw world of back street idealism, paramilitary style violence and heroic self-sacrifice."--Publisher.
