Book Synopsis The Routledge Guide to European Political Archives by : Chris Cook
Download or read book The Routledge Guide to European Political Archives written by Chris Cook and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-09-10 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new publication, a sister volume to the highly-acclaimed Routledge Guide to British Political Archives, provides a wide-ranging survey of the non-governmental archive sources for historians of post-war Europe. It provides, within a single volume, a rich treasure trove of resources drawn from the archives of the member states of the European Union and beyond. These major archive resources range from the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam to the Modern Records Centre at Warwick University, from the European University Institute at Florence to the Archive of Social Democracy near Bonn, from the Feltrinelli Institute in Milan to the Monnet Foundation in Lausanne. The volume also concentrates on providing resources for areas of Europe’s modern political past now increasingly attracting serious historical research. They include the initial post-war reconstruction era, the rebirth of social democracy in Germany and Italy, the beginning of European integration, relations with Eastern Europe, the Cold War, decolonisation, the fall of Communism, and so forth. A vital part of the story is represented by the papers of the principal architects of European integration, such as Monnet, Spaak, Spinelli, Mansholt, and so forth. However, the remit of this volume extends far beyond statesmen and politicians. It aims to embrace a wider spectrum of European political activism – from libertarians to environmentalists, economists and human rights activists, campaigners for women’s rights, peace activists, anti-globalists, trade unionists, leaders of the student movement, anarchists, federalists and anti-federalists, and a plethora of others. The wealth of information provided here will make this new publication the standard point of reference for students and historians.
Download or read book Eleanor Marx written by Yvonne Kapp and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2018-07-10 with total page 847 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yvonne Kapp’s monumental biography of the daughter of Karl Marx who became a radical activist Eleanor Marx is one of the most tragically overlooked radical figures in history, usually overshadowed by her father, Karl. But not only did she edit, translate, transcribe and collaborate with her father, she also led an extraordinary life as a labour organiser, trade unionist, translator, actor, writer and feminist. Much of this we only know because of this highly acclaimed, outstanding exception to the omission of Eleanor Marx from history. Yvonne Kapp’s biography was first published at the height of feminist organising in the 1970s. Kapp brilliantly succeeds in capturing Eleanor’s spirit, from a lively child opining on the world’s affairs, to the new woman, aspiring to the stage, earning her living as a free intellectual, and helping to lead England’s unskilled workers at the height of the new unionism. She was always more than, yet at the same time inescapably, Karl Marx’s daughter. It is also, inevitably, an unrivalled biography of the Marx household in Victorian London, of the Marx circle, and of Friedrich Engels, the family’s extraordinary mentor. This single-volume edition of Kapp’s foundational biography includes an introduction by Sally Alexander.

Book Synopsis Socialists and International Actions for Peace 1914–1923 by : Masao Nishikawa
Download or read book Socialists and International Actions for Peace 1914–1923 written by Masao Nishikawa and published by Frank & Timme GmbH. This book was released on 2010-10-21 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analyses and accounts of the history of the "Second International" often go up to 1914, the year its anti-war efforts were to prove futile. All actions of the socialists during World War I were discussed in the context of the pathway to the "Third International." The author aims to present a somewhat different picture from existing views by examining the thoughts and actions of socialists in the years 1914-1923 beyond the framework of whether they supported or opposed the "Third International." He describes what circumstances led to the formation of "communism" and "social democracy," which divided in two the international socialist movement for almost 70 years, paying attention to various issues deeply involved in international and domestic politics as well as in the socialist movement. Masao Nishikawa taught western history at the Tokyo Women's Christian College (1966-1968), the University of Tokyo (1968-1994) and Senshū University (1994-2004). He was visiting professor at Ruhr University Bochum (1976-1977) and Bremen University (1988-1989). Upon retirement he was made professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo. He had a worldwide fame as a specialist of international socialist movements.
Book Synopsis Under the Socialist Banner by : Mike Taber
Download or read book Under the Socialist Banner written by Mike Taber and published by Haymarket Books. This book was released on 2021-07-01 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have seen a massive growth of interest in socialism, particularly among young people. But few are fully aware of socialism 's revolutionary history. For this reason, an appreciation of the Second International--often called the "Socialist International"--during its Marxist years is particularly relevant. From 1889 to 1912 resolutions of the Second International helped disseminate and popularize a revolutionary aim: the overturn of capitalism and its replacement by the democratic rule of the working class, as a first step toward socialism. Despite weaknesses and contradictions that led to the Second International 's collapse in 1914, its resolutions during these years remain a resource for those studying the socialist movement 's history and objectives. Many of the topics dealt with--war and militarism, immigration, trade unions and labor legislation, women 's rights, colonialism, socialist strategy and tactics--remain just as relevant today. This book is the first English-language collection ever assembled of all the resolutions adopted by congresses of the Second International in its Marxist years.

Book Synopsis Demonstration Culture by : Kevin J. Callahan
Download or read book Demonstration Culture written by Kevin J. Callahan and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2010 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The movement of international socialism prior to World War I overcame internal disunity and external obstacles by developing a new style of political culture and communication centered on mass-based demonstration. This culture consisted of a diverse repertoire of activities such as public display, political symbolism, the popular press, the issuance of manifestos, massive antiwar rallies, and the convening of impressive political spectacles. As the largest international movement of its era, international socialism articulated a powerful indictment against the European imperialist and militaristic order. Claiming to represent all of humanity and to reconcile national and international identity, international socialism facilitated the expression of political dissent, the expansion of democratic citizenship and the spread of innovative techniques we now consider an essential part of modern political communication and culture. This interdisciplinary book touches upon several fields of scholarship including European Socialism; political communication; social movement; peace studies and World War I.
